The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Friday (15) night took in to custody Warrant Officer 1, Premananda Udalagama from the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) in connection with the murder of The Sunday Leader founding Editor, Lasantha Wickrematunge.
Udalagama, it is learnt, is an aide to head of the DMI, Suresh Salleh.
The arrest was made following an extensive interrogation session by the CID on Friday. The CID presented him before Mount Lavinia magistrate yesterday and obtained permission to detain and question the suspect for 48 hours.
The DMI officer is being charged with abduction of an eye witness, assault, conspiracy and making death threats. Udalagama, during the period of Lasantha’s murder on January 8, 2009, had reported to Major Ansar in the DMI.
The Sunday Leader learns that officer Udalagama was a member of the intelligence team that handled LTTE breakaway at the time, Col. Karuna Amman. At the time Udalagama had reported to the then DMI head, Kapila Hendevitharana.
In 2010, Udalagama had also served in the Sri Lankan mission in Germany.
