The Jaffna District Development Coordinating Committee meeting yesterday turned into a battle field in the presence of Chief Minister C.V.Wignesawaran when Tamil National Alliance (TNA) members crossed the floor to attack EPDP leader and Minister Douglas Devananda.
Trouble sparked off when slain LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabakaran’s relative MK.Sivajilingam was on his feet arguing with Devananda. During the clash, five EPDP members and three TNA members were reportedly injured, reports from Jaffna said.
Unable to bring the situation under control, Chief Minister Wigneswaran walked out of the meeting as members attempted to hurl chairs at each other.
The Jaffna DDC meeting took place at the Jaffna District Secretariat with the participation of Jaffna Government Agent S. Arumainayagam and several other senior Government officials at the Jaffna Government Secretariat yesterday.
From the beginning of the DDC meeting the TNA and the EPDP members were restless and they were verbally attacking each other when the meeting was in progress.
Chief Minister C.V.Wigneswaran with Minister Devananda appealed to the participants to keep calm.
Wigneswaran pointed out that when he was addressing, the EPDP members were quiet and listening carefully to what he spoke. Likewise, the Chief Minister appealed to the TNA members to remain calm when Minister Devananda addressed.
However, the TNA members obstructed the speech made by Minister Devananda and some of the TNA members even got up from their seats and approached him in an aggressive manner.
As the TNA members including Northern Provincial Council Minister of Agriculture P.Aiynkaranesan , NPC members K. Sarveswaran and M.K.Sivajilingam approached Minister Devananda. T
he EPDP leader Devananda’s Coordinating Secretary A.Rajkumar attempted to stop the TNA members from approaching the Minister . But in the melee Rajkumar and several other EPDP members were injured.
The TNA and EPDP members were also extensively using abusive language at each other forcing the Chief Minister to leave the DDC meeting.
The Government officials who were present at the scene tried to calm down the members present at the DDC session.
Following the unruly behaviour of the TNA and the EPDP members the meeting was postponed indefinitely.
Meanwhile, at the Kilinochchi DDC meeting, a similar scenario erupted with abusive language being used on each other between the TNA and the EPDP members which resulted in Chief Minister Wigneswaran forced to walk out of the meeting.
