Artistes from Tamil film industry in India will conduct campaign soon demanding economic sanctions on Sri Lanka&retrieval of Kachchatheevu.
The South Indian Film Artistes Association known as “Nadigar Sangam” took this decision after a meeting with the Tamil Nadu chief minister.
A Tamil film artiste delegation met Jayalalithaa Jayaram & congratulated the former actress for being elected chief minister (CM) the third time.
The delegation also commended the CM for the 3 resolutions passed in Tamil Nadu legislative assembly on Sri Lanka war crimes & Kachchatheevu.
Ms.Jayalalithaa’s approval was sought&obstained for conducting a mass campaign urging retrieval of Kachchatheevu & imposing sanctions on Lanka.
It is presumed that Jayalalithaa wants to mobilise Tamil Nadu in support of her political initiative on Sri Lanka through the film artistes.
Tamil film artistes will soon go in procession to Guindy official residence “Raj Bhavan” & present memorandum to Tamil Nadu governor SS Barnala.
The memorandum will demand prosecution of Mahinda Rajapaksa for war crimes, economic sanctions against Sri Lanka & India to take back K”theevu.
Thereafter the “Nadigar Sangam” will stage demonstrations in different parts of Tamil Nadu to support the demands&build public opinion.
Given the wide popularity enjoyed by film actors&actresses in Tamil Nadu the campaign by the Film artistes is expected to have great impact.
South Indian Film Artistes association(SIFAA)has staged political demonstrations on Lankan issues in the past including a 2008 hunger strike.
SIFAA has much influence with politically active actors such as MG Ramachandran, Sivaji Ganesan, SS Rajendran & Vijayakanth heading it earlier.
SIFAA President now is Sarathkumar an MLA&secretary is an ex-MLA from ruling AIADMK Radharavi. Sarath Kumar was also part of the AIADMK.
The SIFAA delegation that met the CM consisted of Sarathkumar, Radharavi, Actors Satyaraj, Mayilsaamy & actresses Manorama&kuyili.
When Karunanidhi was Chief Minister SIFAA was perceived as backing the DMK but after Jayalalithaa’s return the SIFAA is trying to woo her
SIFAA wanted a date from the CM to have a felicitation ceremony for her but the “Peeved” Jayalalithaa declined saying she was busy & had no time.
Decision to hold demonstrations supportive of Jayalalithaa’s resolutions on Sri Lanka & Kachchatheevu is seen as a move by SIFAA to “cool” her.
