Tamil Nadu MDMK party leader Vaiko flew out to Brussels to address seminar on Sri Lanka at EU parliament premises on Wednesday June 1st.
The seminar titled “Sri Lanka – Two years after the war: Will the perpetrators be brought to justice?” will be held at ASP 1G2 of the EP.
The seminar critical of the Rajapaksa regime is organized by the GUE/NGL – (EUROPEAN UNITED LEFT/NORDIC GREEN LEFT)MEP’s & Global Tamil Forum.
Members of the european Parliament &Tamil community representatives such as Vaiko (V.Gopalasamy) & GTF president Fr.S.J. Emmanuel will speak.
The left – leaning GUE/NGL group has 34 Members from 13 Countries in the EP.The GUE/NGL submitted a resolution condemning Lanka 2 weeks ago.
Due to efforts by SL envoy Ravinatha Ariyasinha the original harsh text of the resolution was diluted&passed unanimously as a compromise.
The livewire behind the original resolution & the seminar scheduled for June1st is Irish MEP for Dublin Paul Murphy. He will speak on Wednesday.
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham (MDMK) leader Vaiko has been a long standing supporter of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Vaiko was an ally of Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalaithaa Jayaram but his party MDMK did not contest the recent Tamil Nadu elections.
Vaiko (V.Gopalasamy) is regarded as a powerful orator & is scheduled to address many pro-LTTE meetings in Europe after the seminar in Brussels.
The SriLanka “meeting” at European Parliament premises on June 1st would be conducted as a public hearing with people submitting “evidence”.
Tamil activists from Sri Lanka, India, UK, France,germany&Belgium & some other members of European parliament will “testify” at the “hearings”.
The “audience” at the “hearings” would mainly be of members of the European Parliament.Invitations have been sent to all MEP’s & 350-400 may attend.
The “hearing” will brief the MEPs on the origin of the Sri Lankan conflict,the war & its aftermath & what the prospects are for lasting peace.
The “hearing” will focus on the recent UNSG advisory panel report that found “credible allegations” against both the Sri Lankan Govt & LTTE.
Plans are afoot to get the “hearing” pass a unanimous resolution on Sri Lanka urging justice,rights&equality for the “oppressed” Tamil people.
A recommendation urging the European Parliament to send a fact -finding delegation to Sri Lanka & probe the humanrights situation will be made.
An all party members of European Parliament group for Tamils in Sri Lanka is also likely to be formed at the meeting in Brussels on June 1st.
The “Tamil solidarity” group consisting of British MP’s, Trade unionists & leftists is playing a big role in organizing the hearings” at Brussels.
