The South Indian state of Tamil Nadu has a robust Film industry. From it’s nascent stages ,film- making in the state has been inclusive in nature. Artistes and technicians from various parts of India have worked and continue to work in Tamil films. Many non –Tamils employed in the film sector have chosen to live in Chennai.

Sri Lanka’s film industry too has had historical links with Tamil Nadu. The first Sinhala film produced by SM Nayagam a Tamil was shot in Madras as Chennai was known earlier. Several other Sinhala films in the forties and fifties were made in India.

Several South Indian artistes were involved with Sinhala films then. The veteran director P. Neelakandan, music composer Vedha, Playback singers like AM Rajah, Jikki ,Ranee and Jamunarani have all left their imprint on Sinhala films.

Movie: Wana Mohini. Singers: H. R. Jothipala and Jamuna Rani

An interesting aspect of this Madras-Ceylon collaboration was the record created by Indian film producer-director Sri Ramulu Naidu in 1954. Naidu the owner of Pakshirajah studio in Coimbatore produced the block buster “Malaikallan” starring MGR and Bhanumathy that year. It was adapted from the Novel written by the state’s poet laureate Namakkal Ramalingampillai.

What was remarkable is that Naidu went on to make and re-make the Tamil film in five more languages. Each version was a commercial success. This six film phenomenon has not been replicated by anyone so far.

Soorasena

The Telugu film was “Aggi Ramudu”; the Malayalam version “Taskara Veeran”; in Kannada it was “Bettada Kalla”; the Hindi movie was “Azad”. Now guess in which language the sixth film was made? Sinhala! The film was named “Soorasena”.

I do not know who acted in the film but the music was composed by SM Subbiah Naidu. Among the songs were “athana methane” by Jamuna Rani, “Manaram Ranguman” by Jamuna Rani and Ranee. I believe the Sinhala singer duo Lata and Dharmadasa Walpola sang “Aalokey Alokey” and “Ananda Shreeya” for “Soorasena”.

This phase came to an end from the early sixties. Exchange control procedures being tightened was a restraint. Costs of production in Tamil Nadu escalated. More importantly Sinhala cinema had its tryst with destiny after Lester’s “Rekawa”. Making films in India went out of fashion. Sinhala cinema acquired an indigenous flavour and came into its own.

When the economy was liberalised and exchange control procedures relaxed after the advent of the UNP government in 1977 a new phase began. Indo-Lanka joint ventures flourished.Several actors and actresses like Malini Fonseka (Pilot Premnath) Gamini Fonseka (Neelakkadalin Orathiley) Vijaya Kumaratunga (Nankooram) Geetha Kumarasinghe (Mohanappunnagai) have acted in Tamil films.

Who is the black sheep – HR Jothipala ~ Sinhala – dubbed film: Pilot Premnath (1985)

Currently Pooja Umashankar acts in both Sinhala and Tamil films. She is of Indo- Lanka parentage with a Sinhala mother and Kannadiga father. Sri Lankan beauty queen Jacqueline Fernandez made her debut in Hindi films by playing the heroine opposite Riteish Deshmukh in “Aladin”.

Several Tamils from Sri Lanka too have worked in the Indian Tamil film industry. The reputed cinematographer–director Balu Mahendra is from Batticaloa. The producer – director–story and screenplay writer VC Kuganathan is from Jaffna. Others like “Ceylon” Vijayendran, AE Manoharan and Ceylon Chinnaiah have also made their mark in Tamil Nadu films. In earlier times Thavamani Devi from Jaffna dazzled Tamil film fans. Her topless female Tarzan role in “Vanamohini” remains unforgettable.

MG Ramachandran

There are other historical links too. The well –known actor and former Tamil Nadu chief minister MG Ramachandran (MGR) was born in Kandy. The comedian Superstar JP Chandrababu lived for many years in Colombo and was an alumni of St.Josephs College. The actress cum producer Radhika and her actress sister Nirosha are daughters of famous Tamil actor MR. Radha. Their mother was from Wennappuwa. The actress Sujatha lived for many years in Galle where her father was teaching. She speaks fluent Sinhala. The music composer L. Vaidyanathan was born in Arali when his father the Violin Maestro was teaching carnatic music at Jaffna College.

It could be seen therefore that a historical connection existed and continues to exist between Sri Lanka and the Tamil Nadu film industry. There was a time before 1983 when the Sinhala film industry was all –embracing with multi-ethnic participation. The Tamil film industry to its credit continues to be inclusive with multi – ethnic , multi-religious participation.

This idyllic state of affairs is facing some upheaval in recent times. The serpent in the name of politics is invading the garden of Eden. The powerful factor causing this is the impact of Sri Lanka’s ethnic crisis or the Tamil problem.

Politics is not something new to Tamil filmdom. Several actors and actresses like MGR, Sivaji Ganesan, SSR (SS Rajendran) KR Ramasamy, TV Narayanaswamy,K. Bhagyaraj,Ramarajan,Sarathkumar,Vijaykanth, Karthik, SS Chandran, Radharavi,Vaigai Chandrasekharan, Cho, SV Shekhar,Napoleon, VN Janaki, Jayalalitha, Padmini, Vyjayanthimala, Jeyachitra, Theepa etc have engaged in politics with at least three becoming chief ministers.

Others like CN Annadurai, M.Karunanidhi, “Murasoli” Maran, Nanjil Manoharan, AVP Asaithamby, have been script writers. Politicians like Kovai Chezhiyan, Rama Arangannal, RM Veerappan have been film producers.

It is however important to note that these cine artistes while engaging in politics did not politicise the film industry. In fact they tried hard to prevent their politics affecting the film industry. On numerous occasions these actors and producers sank political differences to rally on behalf of the film industry.

Cinematic

Currently there are three important political party leaders in Tamil Nadu with a cinematic background. One is Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham (DMK) leader and Chief minister Karunanidhi. The other is All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham (AIADMK) leader Jayalalitha. The third is Desiya Mutpokku Dravida Kazhagham (DMDK) leader Vijaykanth.

While their political rivalry does cause waves the film industry is not affected by this on a large-scale though individual film artistes do flock around these leaders .The industry is not politicised by this brand of politics.

There are however two tendencies within the Tamil film industry that are politicising it on a large scale and causing ethnic divisions. One is the mobilising of the film sector for political causes affecting the state. One such instance is the agitation against the Karnataka state over sharing of Cauvery river waters.

All the film artistes in the state are expected to participate in these activities. Those who do not are vilified as anti – Tamil. Woe unto those who are from Karnataka state or from the Brahmin caste. They have to be extra-careful in not “offending” these abrasive sentiments expressed in the name of Tamil nationalism.

The second and perhaps more potent source of politicisation and division is the Sri Lankan Tamil issue. On a broader political level the Lankan Tamil issue has been hijacked by pro-LTTE, pro – Eezham, minor politicians like Pazha. Nedumaran and Vaiko (V.Gopalaswamy). A vociferous minority hogs the megaphone and engages in actions that are detrimental to Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka relations.

Politicisation

This tendency has now pervaded the film industry too. Just as in the political sphere, a short-sighted, selfish group has assumed the leadership of this type of politics in the cinematic sphere. As a result a virulent form of politicisation is imposed on the film industry. An extremist agenda is set by an active minority and the silent majority is compelled to fall in line or face the threat of being ostracised.Politicisation encompasses the entire industry in this manner.

The proponents of this new ultra-nationalism in the Tamil film sphere are hell bent on rupturing all links with Sri Lanka. Tamil film artistes are prohibited from travelling to Sri Lanka or engaging in film related activity there. This unhealthy trend in a sense is ahistorical as it seeks to reverse an amicable relationship that has been in existence from the time movie making commenced in both places. There is a strong element of coercion here as those who flout this process face punitive consequences.

Chief among this group holding the entire industry to ransom is a man called Sebastian Seeman. This man is a film director and actor. He is an ardent supporter of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE) and a rabid follower of Velupillai Prabhakaran. He is one of those propagating the myth that Prabhakaran is alive and that Tamil Eezham is around the corner.

Seeman has formed a political organization called “Naam Thamizhar” or “We Tamil”.This was the name of a movement founded in 1958 by the lawyer and publishing tycoon SB Adhithanar. The “Naam Thamizhar” movement of Adhithanar advocated secession from India for Tamil Nadu state and also demanded a Pan-Tamil state comprising Tamil Nadu, the North-east of Sri Lanka and even other regions in Malaysia and Burma where Tamils lived in large numbers.

Adhithanar dropped his separate Tamil state demand after secessionism was disallowed Constitutionally in 1962. He later contested on the DMK ticket and was Tamil Nadu legislature speaker when Annadurai was chief Minister. When Karunanidhi became chief minister Adhithanar was co-operatives minister.

“We Tamil”

It was Adhithanar’s “We Tamil” label that Seeman borrowed for his party. Incidently Seeman too hails from the same Nadar community as Adhithanar.Seeman inaugurated his party in Madurai in mid-May. Around 60,000 members were enrolled on the first day. Seeman’s flag has the tiger symbol.

Seeman has a pathological hatred of the Sinhala people and Brahmins .He accuses Sri Lanka of unleashing genocide on his Tamil brethren in Sri Lanka. The Brahmins are accused of colluding in this. He often utters blood-curdling threats. Last year he was deported from Canada for threatening that Sinhalese should be killed.Last week he issued similar threats against Sinhalese in India.

A public meeting was organized to condemn the alleged shooting of a Tamil Nadu fisherman by the Sri Lankan navy. Seeman addressing the meeting said that if Tamil fishermen were continuously killed then Sinhalese students in India will have to face death. The Tamil Nadu police cracked down on him for spreading disaffection among people and threatening to commit violence.Seeman has been remanded till the 23rd.

The harsh reality in Tamil Nadu is that Seeman’s stock has been rising among supporters of the LTTE in the state. He has actually overtaken politicians like Nedumaran and Vaiko in becoming the accredited pro-tiger leader in Tamil Nadu. One reason for this is Seeman’s claim that he had met Prabhakaran when the war was on and received his endorsement. One of the films directed by Seeman was named “Thamby” or younger brother. Thamby is the pet name for Prabhakaran.

The primary cause for Seeman’s ascendancy among pro-LTTE sections in Tamil Nadu is due to his chauvinist outpourings and irresponsible pronouncements. He makes a tremendous impression on emotionally vulnerable youths. In addition Seeman also has a cinematic charisma being a director and actor. Seeman has been in the forefront of powerful moves to politicise the Tamil film industry over the Sri Lankan Tamil issue.

Seeman

Those involved in the industry were galvanised into staging demonstrations and protest fasts over the issue. There is a great deal of concern and sympathy in Tamil Nadu on this.Protesting or expressing sympathy over the Tamil predicament in Sri Lanka by their Tamil Nadu counterparts is understandable and legitimate. But Seeman and those of his ilk channelled these sentiments into a strident extremist stance.

Sebastian Seeman

Moreover those not participating were branded as traitors to the Tamil cause. Extra pressure was exerted on non – Tamils in the industry. The actor Jeeva is of North Indian origin but hails from a family resident in Chennai for decades. When Jeeva attended a demonstration , Seeman singled him out for praise saying that Jeeva was manifesting his gratitude for living comfortably in Tamil Nadu for years. What Seeman was saying in his crude fashion was that non – Tamils in the state had to toe the “Ultra- Tamil” political line.

Thus Seeman was virtually intimidating and influencing the Tamil film industry on this issue. Seeman and supporters were presented with a fresh opportunity when the India International Film Awards (IIFA) festival was scheduled to be held in Colombo in early June this year. The IIFA ceremony has been criticised by the Indian non- Hindi film industry for virtually ignoring non – Hindi films. But it was not on this count that Seeman spearheaded a campaign against it.

Seeman was opposed to the IIFA being held in Colombo. He and his supporters alleged that genocide was on against Tamils in Sri Lanka and that as a mark of solidarity with Tamil Nadu the Hindi film industry should boycott the festival in Sri Lanka. Those who wanted to attend were warned that their films wont get screened in Tamil Nadu and that they wont be allowed to work in Tamil Nadu.

The anti –IIFA elements targeted the brand ambassadors for the festival Amithabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. Seeman’s supporters transcended state boundaries and spread their protests in Mumbai the cradle of Bollywood movies. Demonstrations were held opposite the Bachchan and Khan residences.

IIIFA Festival

As the protests escalated the Hindi filmwallas began capitulating. Both Amitabh and Shah Rukh retreated and said they would not be able to make it to Colombo. So did Amitabh’s son Abishekh and daughter in law the ravishing Aiswarya Rai. None of them said they were boycotting due to the protests but it was quite obvious . A number of other stars also kept away citing various excuses.

The protestors also targeted the famous director Maniratnam whose film “Ravan” was to premiere in Colombo for IIFA. Maniratnam backed out saying post-production was incomplete.

Tamil Nadu stars invited for the IIFA festival were also asked not to proceed. Superstar Rajnikanth announced that he was not going. The other superstar Kamal Hassan stated that he had already turned the invitation down. Emboldened by their success , Seeman & co demanded that Kamal return the “Padmashree” honour awarded by the Government. Kamal refused saying it was an honour bestowed by his country.

In Tamil Nadu a joint meeting was held among the various bodies connected to the film industry. The “Nadigar Sangam” (Actors Guild) along with the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) representing film industry workers, the film producers council,Theatre owners association and film distribuotors association met and issued an ultimatum to those planning to attend the IIFA in Colombo. It was common knowledge that Seeman was the hidden force behind this move.

There were however many Hindi film stars who defied the diktat and proceeded to Colombo. Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Bipasha Basu, Kareena Kapoor, Diya Mirza,Suniel Shetty and Vivek Oberoi were among those who boldly defied the objectors and attended the IIFA. Salman stepped in as brand ambassador and took Amitabh to task for bowing out at the last minute.

The festival took place as scheduled though with a few mishaps. It had however lost its lustre as a result of the boycott. Lanka’s Jacqueline made the nation proud by getting the award for best debut performance.

Vivek Oberoi

In Tamil Nadu the film industry big-wigs began cracking down on those who had attended the IIFA. Genelia D’Souza a Goan actress was acting opposite Vijay in the Tamil movie “Velayutham”. When media reports stated that she had been in Colombo, Genelia was promptly fired from the movie. But Genelia appealed saying she had not attended the Festival. It was accepted. She now continues to act in the film.

Namitha the buxom bombshell from Gujarat announced that she had rejected the IIFA invitation as her loyalty was to Tamil Nadu where she had made her mark in Tamil movies. Namitha was praised lavishly for her solidarity with Tamils.

The casualty in this exercise was Hrithik Roshan. His film “Kites” was pulled out from Theatres in Tamil Nadu as the actor had gone to Colombo and also captained a team in the friendly Cricket encounter. This sent the shivers down many film stars.

Two actors however were unfazed by this high-handed action. They were Salman Khan and Vivek Oberoi. Both had been romantically entangled with the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai. In fact they had clashed openly over her. But now both had lost out to Abhishekh who had made Aishwarya the Bachchan “bahu”. The jilted two stood by Sri Lanka despite the pressure. Apart from participating at the IIF both actors extended their stay in Sri Lanka.

Vivek accompanied Namal Rajapaksa to the North and had a first –hand experience of the situation there. He was at Poonagari for the inauguration of the Pooneryn – Gurunagar ferry. Oberoi was also a Guest at the mass wedding ceremony for ex –LTTE cadres in Vavuniya. Vivek was a big hit and was seen dancing with the newly weds.

Vivek also went to Nedunkerny where he was appalled by the condition of a school there. Oberoi has now taken the responsibility for renovating and re-building the school, equipping it and providing assistance to teachers and students.

Those who recall the yeoman service rendered by Vivek to coastal villagers in Tamil Nadu affected by the Tsunami are confident that Nedunkerny too would benefit as pledged by Vivek. Incidently his father Suresh is an actor from Punjab while Vivek’s mother is From Tamil Nadu.

Salman Khan

Salman Khan also promised aid to the affected Tamils in the North. He promised to construct 125 housing units. Salman however was bowled over by the scenic beauty of Sri Lanka and the friendly hospitability of her people. He stated that he would shoot his movie “Ready” in Lanka.

Asin Thottumkal (L) stands next to Salman Khan gesturing during a news conference, about their new film “Ready” which is being shot in Sri Lanka, in Colombo June 30, 2010-Reuters pic

The film was already slated to be shot in Mauritius. But Salman got the location shifted to Sri Lanka. Soon his co – star Asin arrived in Colombo. The defiance of Vivek Oberoi and Salman Khan had irritated the hardliners in Tamil Nadu filmdom. The involvement of Asin angered them further.

24 year old Asin Thottumkal is a “Mallu” or Malayalee actress from Kerala. She was born in Kochi on October 26th 1985. Her father is a businessman and mother a medical doctor. The name Asin means without sin . The “A” is from Sanskrit denoting without and the “Sin” is from English.Asin says poetically that her name means “pure without blemish”

Asin ~ Mukunda Mukunda in Dhasavatharam

Asin has acted in Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films. The first movie she acted in Tamil was “Ullam Ketkuthe” but the first to be released was “M.Kumaran son of Mahalakshmi” She has acted in many successful Tamil films like Sivakasi, Pokkiri, Varalaru, Vel, Maja, Alvar, Ghajini and Dhasavatharam. Within a few years Asin had established herself as the uncrowned queen of Tamil cinema

Asin captivated the hearts of many through her role in “Ghajini” where she played Kalpana , a vivacious and impulsive girl with a heart of gold. The film was re-made in Hindi with Aamir Khan paying the male lead. This movie was Asin’s entry into Hindi films. It was a smashing success with Asin receiving rave reviews and awards.

Her second film was opposite Salman Khan . “London Dreams” was a flop but Asin had earned a place in Hindi cinema. She stopped acting in Tamil films and relocated to Mumbai. Tamil film fans were deeply distressed. But recently she was signed opposite Vijay for a Tamil film.

Asin

The sight of Asin visiting Sri Lanka along with Salman Khan and the announcement that she was acting in a movie being filmed in the Island infuriated the anti –Lanka lobby in Tamil film industry. Asin was warned to drop out of the film or face consequences in Tamil Nadu. She was informed that she would not be allowed to act in Tamil unless she recanted and withdrew from “Ready”.

But the attractive actress was made of sterner stuff. Instead of succumbing to the intimidation , Asin made a spirited defence explaining her position. She pointed out that the initial appeal was not to attend the IIFA festival as a token of sympathetic concern for the suffering Sri Lankan Tamils. Asin said that she respected that appeal and had refrained from going to Colombo for IIFA ceremony. That was her own decision, she said.

However the decision to shoot “Ready” in Lanka was not hers. When she signed up for the film it was to be shot in Mauritius. But it was now changed to Sri Lanka. As an actress she had no say in the matter. In terms of her contract she had to act wherever the location. It was unfair therefore to penalise her for this.

Asin also had the temerity to challenge the chauvinist hawks in Tamil tinselworld. “Why are actors being forbidden to go to Lanka”? She queried. The Cricketers were going there and no one was objecting, businessmen were going and no one was protesting, tourists were going and no one was criticising but only actors were being threatened with penalties for going to Sri Lanka. “Five planes with full load of passengers were going to Colombo daily” Asin argued.

Even as the Asin furore gathered momentum the double standards and hypocrisy of Seeman was further exposed. Seeman had assembled a pack of “volunteers” to be used for demonstrations against “traitors” to the Tamil cause. Now these dogs of war were straining at the leash to launch a campaign against a forthcoming Hindi film “Raktha Charithra”.

The film directed by Ram Gopal Varma had Vivek Oberoi playing the lead role. Since Vivek had not only attended the IIFA festival but had also teamed up with Namal Rajapaksa to travel to the North, Seeman’s “attack canines” wanted to teach him a lesson. But to their shock Seeman vetoed the proposal.

Asin, Surya in Ghajini

Surya

“Raktha Charithra” was also the first Hindi film of Surya the Tamil actor. Surya was the son of veteran actor Sivakumar , elder brother of young actor Karthi and husband of actress Jyothika. Surya had a good role in the Hindi film which was to be dubbed in Tamil as “Ratha Sarithiram” or blood history.

Thus any campaign against the film due to the Vivek Oberoi presence would also affect Surya.Seeman did not want to offend Surya as the actor had consented to star in a future film project of director Seeman. So Seeman who debarred Hrithik Roshan’s “Kites” from flying in Chennai was not prepared to oppose screening of Vivek Oberoi’s “Raktha Charithra” due to Surya.

This hypocritical attitude was typical of Seeman. He would flex muscles and then be flexible for his selfish requirements. For instance he professes to be virulently anti-Brahmin and anti-Sinhala but his hero in many films including “Thamby” was Madhavan a Tamil Brahmin.Likewise his heroine in “Thamby” was Pooja who acts in Sinhala films and is half-Sinhalese. All this showed that Seeman was an opportunist and was hypocritically practising the politics of hate against Brahmins and Sinhalese.

Despite this stance vis a vis Vivek Oberoi’s film the Seeman brigade was howling for Asin’s blood expecting perhaps that she would grovel at their feet. It was announced that Asin would not be allowed to act in Tamil films or in Tamil Naadu. But an unrelenting and unrepentant Asin embarked on an unexpected humanitarian mission.

Humanitarian

Asin established a Trust and organised two humanitarian projects aimed at helping the affected Tamil people in the North. One was to conduct special eye clinics and the other was adopting or sponsoring orphaned children

Asin visiting Jaffna Hospital

150 children ranging from Age one to sixteen were sponsored or adopted by Asin’s trust in the “Sevana” home at Vavuniya. A three day eye clinic was conducted in Jaffna and Vavuniya hospitals. Five medical doctors were brought down from India at Asin’s expense. Over 300 surgeries were performed in Jaffna and around 100 in Vavuniya. Spectacles costing 5,000 rupees each were provided by Asin. There is a waiting list of 4,000 requiring eye surgery and Asin says she will bear the cost.

Instead of being intimidated by the Tamil extremists in Kodambakkam (the Hollywood of Tamil Nadu) Asin boldly travelled to Sri Lanka again. She accompanied the first Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and Gampaha district MP Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle to the North. Asin became the first Tamil film actress to visit Jaffna in three decades.

When she was in Jaffna people began flocking to the Teaching hospital to get a glimpse of her. Those who were let in amidst the tight security were thrilled to interact with the alluring actress. Asin posed for photographs and talked with the people. She also visited the eye clinic patients and received their gratitude and blessings.

In Vavuniya too Asin visited the hospital and spoke with patients. She spent many hours with the orphaned children and distributed many presents along with Mrs. Rajapaksa. The children warmed to Asin and began chatting eagerly. They called her “Akka”. Many started crying when she was leaving and implored her to stay longer. A visibly moved Asin promised to return and left.

The extremists in the Tamil Ndu film world were stunned. They now attacked her viciously for accompanying Shiranthi Rajapaksa to the north. Unable to stomach the fact that this actress had single-handedly accomplished a great deal more for the Northern people than themselves, pro –LTTE Diaspra media accused her of being an Indian Agent.

Offensive

An unperturbed Asin , fortified by her first-hand experience , went on the offensive. She began giving interviews to Tamil Nadu media organs . She told them of the children, the people with eye ailments and above all the abject plight of the Tamil people.

Asin related her experience with the people and said how happy the people were that a Tamil film star had come to see them. She said that the Tamil people were feeling isolated and abandoned and yearned for more and more visits from their kinsfolk in Tamil Nadu. “Instead of boycotting Sri Lanka more people from Tamil Nadu film industry should visit Sri Lanka and express solidarity with the people” she said.

The talented actress described as “Goddess Asin” by some of her fans related anecdotes of how the Tamil people had requested her to bring actors like Surya, Vijay and Ajith with her on her next visit. She pointed out that instead of penalising actors for going to Sri Lanka more people from the Tamil film industry should be encouraged to visit Lanka. “Film stars and cine artistes should build bridges between people and not get embroiled in politics. Please do not mix politics with cinema and art” she appealed fervently.

Asin’s stance and appeal resonated with lots of people. She struck a responsive chord in the minds of many who recognized the futility of “sanctions against Sri Lanka” by the Tamil film world. But the hearts of some hardliners did not melt. While Seeman was quiet due to his arrest, the Actors Guild secretary Radha Ravi announced firmly that Asin would be banned from filming in Tamil Nadu and acting in Tamil films. He said that representatives of all five organizations connected to Tamil filmdom will meet and finalise the verdict against Asin.

The course of events took a different turn when Sarath Kumar the President of the Actor’s Guild issued a statement contradicting the secretary Radha Ravi. Sarath who is also the leader of “Samathuva Makkal Katchi” said that Asin should not be penalised. He said that in deference to an earlier appeal to boycott IIFA festival all Tamil film artistes including Asin had not gone to Colombo.

Sarath Kumar

The matter ended there and the travel ban should not be extended further , Sarath Kumar said. “When so many Indian professionals and entrepreneurs were regularly visiting Sri Lanka it was not fair to debar Tamil film stars from Sri Lanka” he said. The decision against Asin will be reviewed, he said.

Sarath Kumar

Sarath Kumar also went on to say that he had received letters from many Sri Lankan Tamils requesting assistance to re- build their homes. He said that he would submit these letters to the Actors Guild executive committee and discuss the matter. Sarath Kumar said a decision would be taken soon about a delegation of Tamil actors and actresses visiting Northern Sri Lanka.

It remains to be seen whether Sarath Kumar would be able to convince his colleagues about an enlightened approach to the issue in general and the Asin affair in particular. It does seem however that the defiant courageous stand adopted by Asin would receive broad approval.

Asin has certainly demonstrated her mettle by confronting and combating the extremist elements in the Tamil film industry. Her principled stand over the Sri Lankan issue should endear her to all right –thinking people. The humanitarian projects she has financed will bring greater benefits to a section of the people than all the rants and raves of Seeman and his rabid followers.

The Tamil Nadu film industry should transcend politics and reach out to Sri Lanka. Tamil films are viewed not only by Tamils and Muslims but also by a large number of Sinhala people. A visit by a Tamil film star delegation would be welcomed by the people of Sri Lanka regardless of ethnicity. As for the Sri Lankan Tamil people a visit by Tamil actors to the North and East would be appreciated more than a protest demonstration in Tamil Nadu.

  1. Hello Mr.Jeyaraj

This is first time I am writing to your website but I read your articles often earlier

I thought of writing because I was talking to my mother in Jaffna this morning and she told me how she had seen and spoke to actress Asin in jaffna. Then I read your article now and thought I must write to you

From what my mother said all what you wrote is so true. My mother went with her sister my aunt for eye surgery for my aunt

The Indian doctors helped by jaffna hospital medical staff was very nice and helpful. My aunt has children abroad and is well -off. So she did not take the free lens given . But a lot of other people did and they are all very greatful to Asin
My aunt too is very greatfu to Indian doctors for eye surgery and Asin for arrangements

My mother is a fan of Asin and she was thrilled to see her personally and speak to her

When my mother spoke in English and told how much she likes her pictures and how much she misses her now in Tamil films Asin smiled and thanked her and told her she is acting in new picture with Vijay named kavalkaran

She told “ungalai ellam santhithathil enakku romba mahilchi” in Tamil to a lot of others

Lots of people who got eye surgery took Asins hand touched their eyes telling “Kan kudutha kadavulamma neengal” in Tamil

One woman fell down on the ground at Asins foot and worshipped her. But Asin was upset and pulled her up with own hands and scolded her tellling “Neenga enakku Amma maadhiri. Ippadi seyyalama? Unga ponnu kaaliley neenga vilalama?

According to my mother Asin won the hearts of all the people in Jaffna who saw her

A lot of people were outside the hopital to see her but security did not allow them in

Because presidents wife Siranthi was there lot of tight security. So lot of people could not meet Asin or get near her. My mother was lucky because she was in the ward sitting near my aunt when Asin came

My mother was so happy about meeting Asin

She also scolded Thamilnadu film industry people for banning Asin in Tamil films

  2. Very interesting and informative article Mr.Jeyaraj

I agree that this girl Asin has been more helpful to the Tamil people than people like Seeman, Vaiko or Nedu.

I am also impressed by your knowledge of cinema matters. I think you should write more on cinema and film personalities .

    Hope you’ll consider it

  6. DBS sir, you are being too harsh on Seeman. He is a great man, whom is prepared to die for the Tamil cause. Many Tamils believe Pooja Umashankar is Tamil. Tamil Cinema standing behind Eelam Tamils should be applauded, not cursed or ridiculed. Great Article.

  7. What happens if we the Sinhala people demonstrate against Tamil movies being screened in Sri Lanka?

    Good article

  8. Dear DBS,

I am an Indian Tamil living in USA for couple of decades. Last couple of years of Sri Lankan Tamil problem had caused some emotional struggles and made me to read and research a lot on Tamil and Sri Lanka from various media (including your website) and sources.

I think you have adopted a surface level understanding of the Indian Tamil feelings and context in Tamil Nadu especially the Sri Lankan Tamil Genocide, Indian Tamil Fishermen killings and torture by SL Navy (it is reported and documented that 500 Indian Tamil fishermen lost lives) and a half a century of GOSL state terrorism. The peace living, sober and inclusive nature of Tamils are taken for granted and history has shown that Tamils are in the receiving end and end up as victims with justice not served most of the times. Although I am not supporter of extreme ideals, at this juncture people like Seeman are necessary in Tamil nadu to wake them up from their soberness and ignorance, A strong Tamil protectionist view for the Tamils cause to kindle people to come out from their shells without extreme unlawful actions in a democratic way is the need of the times.. I have observed Tamils are the most divergent groups…I keep thinking why Sri Lankan Tamils could not build up their genocide and cause in that decade itself to the UN and international organizations after the 1983 Black July riots? Solutions to community comes by cohesive and political capital ideas and actions of the community.

Sometimes I hear a different tone of the Sri Lanka Tamil problem from an educated Jaffna Tamil versus a educated Colombo Tamil.

Is the century old Sri Lankan Tamil Problem partly a making of the Tamils or it is a full and full problem created by the Sinhala politicians and the Sinhala Extreme Buddhist Society?

    Mani

  10. DBS,
It’s good article, you missed to point out Rajanikanth’s Thee movie taken in 1980. Also most of the young generation Sinhalese people have no clue about their own movie industry’s past and how it’s big time influenced by Tamil movie industry.

    @Hewage ,
most of all Sinhala people don’t watch that many tamil movies, second even if they do, it’s not going to make a big difference to their industry.
Boycotting Agriculture, Textile, Automobile and Heavy Industries such as oil,Electronics and Software Industry from Tamil Nadu might make a impact on them but will do big impact on SL.
Please look for a better solutions than looking for a short term lame solutions.

  11. Dear DBS

Your are creating a new bridge with our old culture. Tamil people or India means no difference to Srilanka we have the same culture and feelings.

There should not be an any differences in future we must live with love and peace.

Thanks to actress Asian for the brave decision to and help to Srilankan people (Tamils)

  12. Wow! what a great article

Yes Asin is as her name means without sin. She is pure and without blemish

  13. I salute Asin madam

300 people getting eye surgery and 150 orphans getting sponsored is far greater service to the affected Tamil people that holding meetings in Chennai, uttering provocative statements and getting jailed

  14. I read recently that Asin fainted while shooting for the Vijay film Kaavalkaaran in Tamil Nadu.Asin was shooting for her upcoming Tamil film Kavalkaran opposite Vijay

Now I think she must have been under strain due to the Tamilian film people hassling her and trying to stop this film

  15. In my point of view, IIFA boycott by Tamil Film Industry was a success. It has made a lot of impact at many levels. I am sure it would have been closely monitored by Indian officials, and may have reemphasized India to pressure SL to come up with some sort of a political solution sooner. I think it might have also reflected on last meeting between Mahinda and Manmohan. Without the boycott, may be Oberai but I don’t think Khan or others would have visited Tamil areas/camps and offered help. Continuation to this, Asin would not give a damn about Tamils if her visit was not criticized. However, I am not in favor of penalizing Asin or Khan, rather we should appreciate them for their help (by force or willingly). After all, they are actor/actress, and no body has any rights to interfere into their job/work. And they have no obligation to help Tamils. I also wish more Tamil artist visit North East to give moral boots and help them on building their lives. It is always good for more independent people to get involve so all needy people get help. At the same time, these helps should not be taken for granted by GOSL. GOSL should allow more independent people to help North East people so they can put their time and effort on providing genuine political solution sooner (I don’t see any excuse for GOSL as there is no LTTE)

Seeman has a gift by birth. From the people that I know, he has the caliber to attract people by his speech. I don’t know if Seeman has any hidden agenda like Karunanithy to use Tamil sentiment to get into power to build his own wealth, but as far as I see he looks genuine so far. The problem with Seeman that I see is that he is too aggressive; he needs to slow down, analyze and understand the reality. It is OK for him to be hardliner but need to learn to respect and accept others also. I wish he get good advisors/counselors around him to lead him properly and importantly he listen to them too. Unfortunately, I don’t know Sinhala but I hear from my friends that Wiman Weerawamsah has the similar talent too. I think gift/talents by birth are like diamond, need to be cut/shaped/polished properly in order to be useful.

  16. Tamil community simply want to expose genocidal srilankan gov.
Asin issue was another way to keep focus on injustice
cause to innocent tamil very systematically.

  17. Thankk you for spotlighting Asin madam here Jayaraj sir

Asin madam’s heart is as pure as her name

her nature is as beautiful as her face

  18. We never heard about Asin before , we never saw her going to refugee camps in India to see and help eelam tamils there…her studden afffection for eelam tamils and coloboration with MR family is very strange…
KP is doing right thing by working with the gvt , because he is in captivity , that s all he can do …..

  19. I salute your good intentions Mr.DBS, but sinhala never ever going to change. Write some thing about why tamils need a separate country?

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

Why should I waste time writing on an unattainable goal in my lifetime?

There was a chance to get de-facto Tamil Eelam but the LTTE and EPRLF killed all chances of it

Writing about the what might have been or what could be but will never be saddens and debilitates me.

The way Tamils are conducting themselves now after the fall of LTTE the Sinhalese Govt will ensure that “ground realities” in the North and East are transformed drastically and permanently that a separate Tamil state would be impossible to establish in the Island

If there should be a country for the Tamils it can only be Tamil Nadu the cradle and citadel of the Tamils

Please ask Seeman, Vaiko, Nedumaran,Mani, Manarasan, Thamarai, Thiyagu, Thiruma and all those Tamil Nadu Tamils asking Sri Lankan Tamils to fight and destroy themselves for Tamil Eelam to fight against New Delhi for a Tamil Country

Tell Seeman to consume cynaide standing on top of LIC building.Tell Nedumaran to fast to death like Thileepan. Tell Vaiko to burn himself like Muthukumar. Tell Kozhathoor Mani to take an AK 47 and shoot at the Indian Army. Tell Thamarai to touch Manmohan Singh’s feet and blow herself up like Dhanu

Cant you see that Sri Lankan Tamils are a battered and shattered people who need to salvage what we lost and preserve what we have instead of destroying ourselves completely by going in search of the “Maaya Maan”?

The LTTE has caused us irredeemable harm. We must now repair and restore not fight for a separate state

At Independence we were well integrated into Ceylon. Now we are isolated and marginalised mainly due to our suicidal fight for separate state

The Dravidian movement was asking for separate state in India at Independence. They dropped it at the right time got into Indian main stream and are now sharing power at the centre

    They said
Vadakku Vaalhirathu.Thetku Theigirathu” then. Today the South is flourishing. Look at Chennai, B’lore and Hydrebad

But we the ri Lankan Tamils. Look how we were and how we are now

    Enough of this separatist talk

Do not be fooled by these Tamil Nadu hypocrites who are ruining us by encouraging separatism for us while they themselves are comfortable with a united India

    Come down to earth

We are lying on the ground now. We must get up first. Not shout slogans about an unachievable goal

  20. “… Last week he issued similar threats against Sinhalese in India…..

DBS you have forgotten to write that he was arrested and remains behind the bars for that threats by Tamil Nadu Govt. It will never happen in India. On the contrary they will be “sinhala heros”.

    #7 Hewage :

Sinhala govt. in 70ies restricted almost banned Tamil Films and magazines in Ceylon. But Tamil Nadu govt. is more civilised. There wouldn’t be any Govt. organised activities like these. Sinhala govt. also killed 7 Tamils in Veerasingham hall in Jaffna, just because there was a world Tamil conference held in Jaffna. No civilised govt. in the world won’t burn libraries!!!

  23. Very good article Mr. DBS Jeyaraj

I recall seeing “Malaikallan” and “Soorasena” and “Azad”

You are a walking encyclopaedia on old films. Continue writing please

  24. The Kollywood film industry resents domination by our Mallu beauties. They are jealous about our Asin shining in Bollywood. Her Sri Lanka trip is cunningly used to drive her away from Tamil films

  25. Seeman and the Indian Tamils behind the boycott of the IIFA have the full backing of the Eelam Tamil youth groups of the diaspora. I want to make this crystal clear.

I dont agree with the threats to Sinhala students. However i agree 100% with a boycott movement towards Sri Lanka similar to what was done in apartheid South Africa.

I was in Chennai recently and met some of these selfless activists who are far from chauvinists. Educated people from diverse backgrounds who knew the full history from Thathai Chelva onwards- librarians, IT professionals etc.
They had utmost respect for people like Vikremabahu karunaratne.

A country can not slaughter 40,000 people, incinerate their bodies and destroy the evidence, settle their land with Sinhala army & families, intern 300,000 people in concentration camps, rape thousands of womens trading sex for food etc and then hold a glitzy flim festival celebrating over their graves with Tamil collusion.

What next IIFA in Burma? in Israel? In North Korea?

Normalising Sri Lanka in a situation like this is a cruelty even Rajapaske is incapable of.

  26. #2 Thilliampalam

I agree with your comments. Vaiko, Nedumaran and Seeman are only fuelling racial hatred.

  27. Seeman looks like VP too.

So the VPs greater Eelaam was not new ?. Thanks DBS for enlightening us.

What a beautiful person Asin is both inside and out?

Reading some comments made my eyes watery.

Salman Khan, Vivek Oberoi you are great . Keep up the good work.

  28. Its good to see Asin’s good side. But the genocide by sinhalese is a bigger issue. If Asin made efforts to impress the first lady about the genocide, that would have helped eelam Tamils.

Now Asin seems to make the first lady and her family a peace loving lot, while infact its contrary to the truth.

  29. Until she left for Mumbai to act in Hindi films Asin was the queen of Tamil cinema. She can regain that place anytime she returns to Tamil films. I think there is a plot to prevent it

  30. I am a Punjabi from Delhi now living in NY

I just googled for Salman & found this piece

!st time I’m on this site

I learnt a great deal from this article

I dunno about Shri lanka politics but I do think Salman, Vivek & Asin are doing the right thing especially Asin. She’s a beautiful person body and soul

  31. How can one sing and dance with those who have killed tamils in large numbers and also where there is still discrimination practiced against tamils.

I am with seeman in this. I am for the boycott.

  32. Comment 23. I Muthu,

Digressing a bit further, J Muthu is quite comfortable in a Western city after running away ,leaving his liberators to perish in the bush.

Still tese people want to keep the left over collateral on the ground untill the Eelaam comes from from the West and lead them away to the promised land.

    Get real mate.

Seeman is your only hope , But if he tries to do a VP he will be history in no time.

    Remember the Khalishtan

  33. Thanks to DBS my regard for Asin has gone up very high

    She’s beautiful,courageous and generous. A rare combination

  34. Great article. Don’t want to be nit picking… but to set the record straight. here is a correction.
    you wrote:
“The music composer L. Vaidyanathan was born in Arali when his father the Violin Maestro was teaching carnatic music at Jaffna College.”
    Correction:
The music composer is late Dr. L. Subramaniam. I had the pleasure of listening to him live many times, and have met him a few times. He lived in Los Angeles. He was born in Arali and his father was a violin teacher at Jaffna College. His brother L. Shankar is also a violin fusion Maestro, but was born in Madras in 1950. He wrote the music to many popular movies, like Last Temptation of Christ, and have produced joint albums with Peter Gabriel and other famous hollywood stars. He lives in Santa Barbara, California.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:
    Thank you for this comment.
Actually L.Vaidyanathan was the eldest son of Lakshminarayana Iyer the illustrious Violin maestro who taught carnatic music at the Jaffna music academy an adjunct of Jaffna College,Vaddukkoddai.
L.Subramaniam and L. Shankar were his younger brothers but more famous internationally

Vaidi as Vaidyanathan was known was an unassuming person immersed in his music. He was an assistant to GK Venkatesh the music composer cum playback singer

Vaidyanathan himself has composed music for over a 100 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannadam. Because of the Venkatesh connection most of the films he composed film music were in Kannada movies. Vaidi was appreciated greatly by Kannadigas . His title music for the “Malgudi days” serial is still popular as a ringtone

Sadly L. Vaidyanathan was not appreciated nor his genius recognized in Tamil films. The few Tamil films I remember he composed music for were the award winning “Marupakkam> “Pesumpadam” and “EZhavathu Manithan”. All the songs in “Ezhavathu manithan” were Subramania Bharathiyars.Vaidi’s tunes were great.

I referred to Vaidyanathan in this article instead of his better known brothers because it is Vaidi who worked in Tamil cinema

Vaidyanathan passed away a few years ago . When he died I wanted to write about him but could not get in touch with any of his family members.I f you can help me with details I shall be grateful.

  35. Beauty and brain. And courage too….Wish her all the best !

And thanks DBS for the article. Learned a lot. Amazing how some people in Tamil Nadu taking the advantage of the misery of Sri Lankan Tamils. And diaspora admiring them for that. Sad.

I respect your views Sir. I also could understand your anger when you spoke those words.

I would like to add certain points to your views.

In India we Indians live as equal citizens. No act like sinhala only here.

Tamil is one of the official languages here.

In sixties when the anti Hindi agitation was at its peak, Nehru gave an assurance that Hindi will not be imposed on the South Indians.

    That assurance is being honoured.

Here forget talking about colonizing the Tamil Nadu, our govt does not colonize or alter the demography of Kashmir or even some north east states.

in fact purchasing lands in those states is out of bounds for the others.

our govt solved many insurgent like problems using both the police and security forces and also using political means.

    Agreements are sacrosanct for us.

We do not put aside agreements aside like bc, dc pact etc.

    No Welikade happened here.

No aerial bombardment was done on the civilian population here.

I can go on and on.

When our state is like that why should we fight for a separate nation.

  37. the article appears to have a short memory of what happened recently and writes about cinema without looking at the trauma of destruction that went on recently in Sri Lanka.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

This article is about the historical links between Sri Lanka and Tamil cinema and how a chauvinist, selfish clique in Tamil Nau is trying to bring about rupture between both in an ahistorical attempt.

It is also about how Indian actors particularly Asin are trying to help some of the traumatised Tamils in their own way while some others are simply talking and shouting without doing anythinng meaningful

  38. Tamil nadu politicians and people alike sincerely supported Srilankan Tamils for what ever cause.

It is the hypocrisy of Srilankan politicians and divisions with in, that caused the downfall of Tamils.

At the moment only emotional Tamil fanatics in Tamilnadu (though i admit they are sincere) support Srilankan Tamils.

Even after the debacle and disgrace, Srilankan Tamils have not learned any thing other than blaming others.

Blame it on Rajiv, Karunanidhi, sonia, vaiko, Nedumaran ans Seeman.

  39. DBS,
I like your response to #23 Jmuthu.
As for the Tamil Nadu politicians and film personalities advocating boycotts, who cares. I don’t think anyone listens. Consider the facts, the tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka has increased in every single month since the war ended last year and a significant percentage of these are from India. In fact last December while we were in Sri Lanka, we did a quick tour of Rajasthan and Delhi from Colombo. Both our Sri Lankan Airlines flights from Colombo and Delhi were packed with Indians coming to the beaches in Sri Lanka.

While we were in Delhi, the travel company that organized our tour there told us that after UK and Germany, Sri Lanka sends most tourists to India, mainly the Singhalese Buddhist pilgrims who visit Buddhist sites in Bodh Gaya, Saranath, and Lumbini. So boycotts can work both ways also.

As for boycotting Sri Lanka, those Tamil Nadu jokers should try acting against companies like Indian Oil, Tata or Bajaj which are doing really well in the booming Sri Lankan economy and see what they will get.

  40. ——–

Even before Seeman and Thiruma were born, Srilankan Tamils are having conflict with Sinhalese anrd armed struggle prevailed in srilanka from 1970’s.

Some Indian Tamils (including Seeman) are siding with Srilankan Tamils in the conflict , just because they are also Tamils.

If Srilankan Political & social leadership (including TNA, TGTE, ) encourage Srilankan Tamils to start live in harmony with sinhalese, even if Tamils are a second class citizen, then all external influences will go away like a vapour.

  41. 37. Mahesh

Why the selective boycott? The Indian cricket team is in Sri Lanka as we write. I did not hear about any protests outside Dhoni’s residence or any threats against Sachin for going to Sri Lanka.

You guys should also campaign against SL players in IPL and boycott all games that feature likes of Kumar Sanggakkara, and Mahela. Or better still ask Seeman to organize a demonstration against Murali when he plays for Chennai.

And heaven forbid, it was reported that a few moths ago Mahinda Rajapaksha’s personal physician treated several very prominent Indian cricketers who had been injured, and that at MR’s official residence in Colombo. So what did you Tamil Nadu guys demanded from those players once they returned from Colombo after the treatments? That they walk through fire to demonstrate that they are still pure and not tainted in any way by the direct association with the famous Singhalese war criminal?

  42. Many thanks DBS Jeyaraj for this article. It is a good and well articulated. My praises goes to Asin for her contribution to the affected people in Northern Sri Lanka. I perfectly agree that political imbroglio on Sri Lanka should not influence the entertainment industry as much it does now. However, I am not sure why Asin should want to go to Jaffna with the first lady of Sri Lanka? Is it a political ploy by the SL government to repair their name or a publicity stunt by Asin who perhaps would like to show her connections with politicians?
I only hope Asin does not point out charted trip to Jaffna in Sri Lankan’s expense as the reason to go with the first lady.
Asin would have won far many hearts and could have done better work for the community had she gone alone and met the people. Nonetheless, my feeling is that the publicity stunt has its own advantages for the people involved.
The Tamil community is already a divided lot, rather than dividing them further by focusing on sensitive issues of caste and divisions in Movie industry, DBS maybe you should attempt an article on how the World Tamils can unite, based on historical experiences.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

If Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa ,Sri Lanka’s first Lady wanted to go along with Asin to the north and see how the eye clinic was functioning or how the Sevana home was (Which Shiranthi inaugurated last year) do you think Asin could have refused?

If Michele Obama US 1st lady wanted to accompany a visiting actress from India can it be refused?

As for writing about world Tamil unity based on historical experiences – There is no historical record of such an event

Never has been and I think never will be

By the way I spent years and years writing about the Tamil issue but nobody listened

Why should I waste the few years I have to write about impossible things?

Let me write on what interests me or what I WANT to write about

  43. “A country can not slaughter 40,000 people, incinerate their bodies and destroy the evidence, settle their land with Sinhala army & families, intern 300,000 people in concentration camps, rape thousands of womens trading sex for food etc and then hold a glitzy flim festival celebrating over their graves with Tamil collusion.”

    I agree with Theepan Mani.

  44. Oh my divine Asin Goddess

    You make me so proud.

I am so glad I am your devoted fan.

You deserve to be worshipped for your noble deeds

  45. THis article provided me with a great deal of information. A treasure trove of amazing details

    kudos to you DBS

  46. DBS

I’ve been ASin’s fan since the time I saw “Ghajini”

After reading your article about her I’ve become her ardent admirer

  47. I am sincerely seeking help for the following query..

What is the need for a separate tamil state for a small country like Srilanka?
Why not all Srilankan Tamils accept as national language (compulsory learning in schools) and accept Sinhala/English as official language?
Why North/east merger is necessary? What is wrong if
    Sinhalese settle in Tamil area?

If your response is if Indian Tamils experience such previleges, why nor Srilankan Tamils?, then Please answer the folowing:
Why do you expect Srilanka to be like (India)Tamilnadu which is the cradle and Citadel of Tamils?
If Tamils in Malaysia would accept and live with mimimum previlges offerd by their nation, why Srilankan Tamils fight for more previleges?
is it worth to fight tooth and nail in Srilanka for more previlges and get destroyed?
If people from uphill country would live in peace with Sinhalese, why not Tamils from north/east?
is it true in the allegation that Srilankan Tamils prolong their fight to migrate and live in a more pasturous country?
    ———————–

  48. I don’t think Tamil Nadu film industry will boycott Asin, and there is no reason to boycott her. If Seeman is a Nadar he will respect Sarathkumar, another powerful Nadar from Adithanar family. And Asin has the support of Sarath.

As a Dravidian Asin has a love for Tamils, and Tamils should respect her sentiments.

Vivek Obroy is a half Tamil ( a close relative of Tamil actor Sathiyaraj) and his love for suffering Tamils is understandable. There is no politics.

And Seeman is not a racist, and he is not a Sinhalese hater. If anyone has any doubt ask Pooja Umashanker
(a half Tamil, and a resident of Kannadam).

TAMILS DON’T HATE SINHALESE. AND TAMILS CAN’T HATE SINHALESE.

If Seeman had threatned Sinhalese students in Tamil Nadu, it is a serious matter and if found guilty he should be jailed.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

When Seeman spoke at a Scarborough Meeting last year he made some references to the Sinhalese people. Canadian authorities found his speech was inflammatory and violating Canada’s hate laws. He was given a choice of being prosecuted in Canada or voluntarily departing. He chose to go

  49. Asin is like a mother goddess though she’s so young. That’s why the kids took to her.

You cant deceive children. They intuitively recognize people with kind caring hearts

  50. Seeman is a Tamil nationalist. If you are not a Tamil you will not understand him.Thousands of Tamils died because people did not care.See if Asin will help the Tamils if her films are banned. She is hoping to get into the good books of the Tamil film industry.

Let her continue to help as a humanitarian but do not allow her films to be screened in Tamil Nadu.

  51. Asin is hoping to get into the good books of the Tamils. If she wants to help, why can’t she consider the people in the slums of Bombay which is her new home?? Even if she did with good intentions, it is a bad omen to be seen welcomed with a red carpet by a notorious war criminal. When she is seen in the company of Rajapaksa AS WELL AS THE people who were thrown into hell by him, what does it say?? Not good. At the same time, Tamil Film Industry has no reason to ban her since she is not the person who chooses film locales. It is Salman who chose Lanka.

  52. India & China help to build railways in Srilanka, Indian Oil Co control petrolium distribution in Srilanka, China build port, India build coal power plant in Sampoor when developed world gearing towards ceasing all fossil fuel burning industries, Asin brought five mediacl doctors to jaffna at her own expense, 150 children were sponsored or adopted by Asin’s trust, a three day eye clinic was conducted in Jaffna and Vavuniya hospitals. Over 300 surgeries were performed in Jaffna and around 100 in Vavuniya.

It appers to be so many good things are happening to tamils in Ceylon. Remember there is no such a thing called “free lunch”, someone already paid or will payback for all these services. This is like western charities with the tiny bit of funding from their corporations from the wealth they accumulate over the years by exploiting environment and labour forces in third world countries.

I am not questioning the good intention of Asin, my point here is tamils are not in the mercy of others. They have all the resources to take care of themselves, when they have the political guarantee to determine their own destiny. Rather spending their energy on reacting to the probelm, I would appreciate if anyone, including Asin working towards acheiving a political settlement for tamils in Ceylon. That is the root cause of the problem. We could have prevented all these children became orphans and people loosing their eye sight, tamils could have earn for their living including to pay theri medical bills. Why tamils have to depend on others? Tamils have all the resources to determine their own destiny.

We all know how tamil diaspora is funding for well being of tamils in Srilanka and such examples are Vanni Tech, funding for Jaffna Teaching Hospital, Tellipalai Hospital, funding for several orphanages, etc etc.

  53. # 43. Mahesh,

Even with in India, if you live in a neighbouring state where majority are Non-Tamils (e.g Karnataka, Maharastra , Delhi , West Bengal etc) Indian Tamils can not expect the previlges they enjoyed in Tamilnadu.

Tamils should learn the local langauge, respect the culture and adjust to live with local community in a friendly manner.

During riots due to inter state political issue ( Bangalore-Cauvery water, Mumbai-Shiv Sena;s- son of soil), even though Tamils are attacked and lose their property and lives, still they adapt and continue to live with Non Tamils in harmony.

Srilankan Tamils need to adapt themselves, how to live in harmony with Majority Sinhala community, even though past and present GOSL are run by Sinhala chauvinists, corrupt and oppressive politicians and faluty policies.

  54. 60. Pushpa

Do you think that the Indian cricket team should be banned in Tamil Nadu? They are playing in Sri Lanka now with the Singhalese devils.

  55. The problem with many Tamils is that they scream and shout at the Sinhalese over extremism but have a lot of trouble having a look at their own community. Tamils are one of the most nationalistic, chauvinistic and extremist people in South Asia. They usually get their own way, but fortunately or unfortunately they met their match with the Sinhalese. And now they are livid because the Sinhalese appear to have won and Tamils have been given a reality check. Tamil Nadu can start by making Telugu an official language of Tamil Nadu as there are about 10% Telugu speaking people in Tamil Nadu. Why is only Tamil given an official status? Are Telugu speaking people second class citizens?

  56. It was fascinating to read about the past links between Tamil cinema in India and Sri Lanka.

    My thanks to DBSJ

  57. I am from Kochin in Kerala which is from where Asin is. Her family is known to us. Asin is younger than me but I remember her as a kind hearted child ready to help others.

I am glad to find her as grown up as a good adult.May God bless her abundantly

  58. My thanks on behalf of all Tamils in Sri Lanka to Asin for her noble ,magnanimous gesture

May Asin blessed by God and be happy, successful and prosperous

  59. There is indeed a strong case against the boycott. If cricket is played, commerce is done and tourism is on between both countries why ask only the filmwallahs to boycott Lanka?

  60. Jaffna is fortunate that Asin set foot on that parched soil with her dainty feet. Wait and see the rains will come

  61. Asin madam is great and magnanimous

But some of the Jaffna Tamils writing on this blog are ungrateful people. That is why they are in this sorry plight

  62. To 9 Mani

You say “people like Seeman are necessary in Tamil nadu”.
Probably they needed people like Hitler in Germany in 1930s.

  63. To someone who is neither Sinhala nor Tamil but a Burgher like me this article made fascinating reading

I’ve been an avid reader of Mr.Jeyaraj since the time he wrote “Behind the Cadjan Curtain” in the early 80’s for Sunday Island

I’ve always found him to be truthful and reliable. He’s impartial when writing the facts but takes a position when expressing a point of view. That opinion I found was reasonable and objective

It’s indeed a pity to see comments on this blog viciously attacking him

When he critiques one side the other side vilifies him and vice versa

But for people like me he is the best. I know many others feel the same way I do about DBS Jeyaraj

  64. “… Last week he issued similar threats against Sinhalese in India…..

DBS you have forgotten to write that he was arrested and remains behind the bars for that threats by Tamil Nadu Govt. No one will be arrested for racial hatred speech or activities or even for murders of Tamilians in Sri Lanka, the “beautiful” country with the world’s most “disciplined” armed forces. On the contrary they will be “sinhala heros” or father of the Nation like D.S. Senanayake or J.R. Jayawardana.

How Tamils in SL can forget when JR encouraged the sinhala thugs and the armed forces to kill Tamils and loot their properties with his famous racial hatred speech in 80ies “….IF YOU(Tamilians) WANT WAR, YOU EILL HAVE WAR!!

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

I dont think you read the article in full.Look at this paragraph from the article please

“A public meeting was organized to condemn the alleged shooting of a Tamil Nadu fisherman by the Sri Lankan navy. Seeman addressing the meeting said that if Tamil fishermen were continuously killed then Sinhalese students in India will have to face death. The Tamil Nadu police cracked down on him for spreading disaffection among people and threatening to commit violence.Seeman has been remanded till the 23rd.”

  65. Dear DBS,
You do not write often. Since you are the only serious journalist we Ilankai Tamils have now, we expect you to focus on seroius political issues. This article about Asin is not worthy one to be penned down by you, I think. Do you really think that these Indian cinema artists posses heart and feelings? Do Tamils need concern from Asin, Salman Khan and Seeman? We all know the real intention of these idiots. Therefor I humbly request you to NOT waste your time on issues like this.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

I dont think this article is on a trivial subject. It has many layers and deals with a complex issue .

The focus is on film artistes but the underlying issue is vast and basically political

I dont see anything wrong in writing about films or film personalities. I would enjoy writing on those and intend to do more in the future

Do not dismiss film stars so casually. Have you forgotten what MGR did for the Sri Lankan Tamils? Their influence is massive in Tamil Nadu

As for Asin I think any person who sponsors 150 orphans and 300 cases of eye surgery through a Trust deserves noteworthy mention

I dont think any Lankan Tamil expatriate criticising Asin on this site has sponsored even 15 orphans or 30 eye surgery cases

Sri Lankan Tamil arrogance and lack of gratitude is colossal

As for writing on “serious”political issues I used to do so and advised the main actors. I was vilified as a traitor and most Tamils were silent

Now everything is finished. There is no serious Tamil politics now

The immediate task is for the fallen Tamils to get up from the ground. For that they can only grasp the hands of those whom they regard as the cause of their fall.

Such is life. What serious politics?

  66. “… Last week he issued similar threats against Sinhalese in India…..

  67. Cardboard Tamil nadu heros make me laugh. Politicians are jokers and the filmstars are racist.

    Way to go Asin !

Everyday I see the Eelam coffin is being nailed from all corners. Each nail will save tens of tousands of sri lankan lives.

  68. What an ugly looking fellow that Seeman. The only suscessful fim he could make is for the BLIND !.

  69. Someone needs to do a Tamil remake of Team America World Polic. It could be called Team Tamil Nadu: World Police with Seeman standing in for Kim Jong Il singing….I’m so very lonely…..

  70. Ref Comment 23,

DBS is a fair minded and pragmatic journalist who calls a spade a spade.

He is used to getting abused because of his writings and as I understand he has even copped a severe bashing from the LTTE hoons a few years ago.

I am sure he is capable of looking after himself after being in the lions den for that long.

This comment is only to show solidarity for a journalist who gives us good insight into relevant and important issues that occupy the minds of both Tamils and Sinhalese alike at present.
    .
He does this with magnificent writings like this piece.

It is time that the pro Tiger Diaspora removed their blinkers and get a reality check

Their Eelaam dream and the associated maneuvers with the help of the Western buddies only help to extend the misery of their own who are by products of their past deeds.

Hiding in the West and throwing “dirt bombs” at sensible advice do not win you any friends.

  71. Asin ,I was appreciate your service and right decisions.I really love that you didn’t go to IFFA which is intentionally whitewashing and crowning war criminals. At the time, you caring the victims of war. This is great decision!

As long as Asin seperate her from SL politics and politician,Tamils will love your service acca!

  72. If Tamils in Malaysia would accept and live with mimimum previlges offerd by their nation, why Srilankan Tamils fight for more previleges?

Because Sri Lankan Tamils are as much bhumiputra as the Sinhalese. When Sri Lankan Tamils ask for more privileges than Malays in Malaysia you may have a point.

Seeman may be a nasty piece of shit but while the Lankan government seems determined to keep the Tamils until massive military occupation as in Kashmir, and steal their land for military camps without compensation he’s always going to have a lot of support.
Incidentally, Rambukwella has announced today that the government is going to keep all the soldiers and all the High Security Zones in the North; no mention of even a rupees compensation for all the land they’ve stolen, or explanation of why the country needs to be occupied massively when the war is over.

  73. Guys.. Donot waste your time… i stopped writing comments to DBSJ….just leave this guy… as long as he has writing skills… he can write to fools …

Stopped writing comments? what’s this then?………DBSJ

  74. DBS, Don’t you have any other topics which are more important you try achieve with KP and Asin…

What do you suggest? something about you?………DBSJ

  75. Why Tamil nadu film stars not visitting to Sri Lanka and see the situation and tell their support to the tamil speaking people, They must come and help not only talking from india.

  76. I admire the girl’s philanthropy. Adopting 160 orphans is a great thing. There will be many bright sparks coming out of these 160 children. But Did Asin think deep like Sebestian Seeman? Who made these children orphans. It is the Sinhalese racist government by bombing the self declared ‘safe zone’.

Most of the eye problems were caused by the economic embargo levied by successive Sinhala governments for political reasons to bring the Tamils to their knees and accept Sinhala rule.

Will Asin speak to Mrs Rajapakse and ask her to give permanent peace with self determination to the Tamils of the North and East rather than giving peace meal gifts to the downtrodden. “Do not give fish to a hungry man but teach him hoe to fish”. Then only he will lead an independent life. If Asin the girl without sin takes this philosophy as a mission she will become Sangamitha to the Sinhalese. Political freedom, language rights and a homeland are fundamentals to a person’s life. Ohm Shanthi.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

So you want Asin to think “Deep” like Seeman? And what is your definition of depth “herr Doktor”? threatening to kill Sinhalese and getting deported from Canada?Threatening to kill Sinhala students in India and getting jailed and being denied bail?

You also want Asin to speak to Mrs. R & give permanent peace instead of piecemeal gifts to the downtrodden? Sitting comfortably in the west and supporting the LTTE to cause misery to the Tamil people you have the audacity to mock a woman who at least is helping a few to see.

What did you do? You only helped the LTTE to “Blind” the nation? And what do you want people to live on while you teach them to fish? You dont want people to have eye surgery or eat food until Tamils get self -determination?

You say you want peace to the Tamil people? I thought the LTTE you supported has already brought “peace of the graveyard” to the Tamil people?

I have seen some of the stuff you write on e-mails. They are far from being peace loving. And you end the comment by saying Om Shanthi! You must be meaning the Shah Rukh – Deepika movie “OM Shanthi Om”

by the way make up your mind. Do you want Seeman or Asin to win back lost rights of Tamils?

  77. I have heard that Mahinda Raja got 2 pigs slaughtered for the grand bruch he organised for the IIFA people at Temple Trees but on the day very few turned up (he had opened the door and waited til 3 pm), Mahinda Raja got so angry he did not go to IIFA. He asked Malini, Somarathna, Ravindra and Jackson, not to go like himself, Shiranthi and Namal. But th latter two had gone wtihout telling Mahinda Raja. Malini had told Mahinda Raja this. Then during intermission Mahinda Raja had rung Shiranthi and Namal and had abused them in utmost filth ordering them to return home immediately. IIFA filmstars had been extremely tired tha day, had slept til and the show was that eveinging that’s why they did not go. Poor Mahinda Raja.

  78. 54. sjoseph:- You remind me of the Buddah who said “awareness is wisdom” You are trying to be aware of the real issues and one day you will succeed. The lesson I have leant from the west is to have an open mind and not to be judgmental too quickly like Mahesh who has decided GOSL and sinhalese are all sh..t. If you got no answers in the next month, I will answer.

  79. DBS:- Many thanks for an article which has some astounding information. I did not know MGR was borne in Kandy but I can remember seeing Vanamohini and spent sleepless nights thinking of that sexy actress…….
What ever you write, you will be either shot by pro LTTE or Sinhala die hards. So, you might as well write what you like, ignoring these extremists. One blogger says Seeman can draw people to him which reminded me of Hitler!

  80. The charitable gesture of Asin certainly deserves praise. Nevertheless the chartity of Kerala people on the whole deserve illustration.

  81. 48. Ranjan, Toronto

I don’t like cricket. I do not follow cricket matches. Even then no match was played in Chennai when the Sri Lankan team visited India to the best of my knowledge.

IIFA was organised to show to the world that everything was normal in Sri Lanka.

IIFA was touted to bring in lot of business deals wherever it is held.

Therefore the protest was against IIFA.

Tamils live all over the world. It is thirai kadalodiyum thiraviyam thedu for the Tamils.

Without adjustments to different ethnic groups Tamils could not have prospered all these days in all these countries.

Therefore I request you not to preach to Tamils about adjusting et al.

You talked about the riots in Bangalore and other places where tamils were attacked.

I live in chennai. I am a Kannadiga, in my Mother’s side and Maharashtrian in my Father’s side.

Even during the bangalore riots not only me no kannadiga here in Chennai or anywhere in tamil Nadu were targeted.

That is the culture of the Tamils.

Tamils live in harmony in different parts of the India, in different parts of the world.

In no place have they took to arms as they have done in sri lanka.

They are a peace loving people.

There is a verse ‘saadhu mirandaal kaadu kollathu’. This could be apt in the sri lankan context.

Please dont’ try to teach these highly cultured and intelligent and industrious people.

one should be great enough and good enough to appreciate the greatness and the goodness of the other people.

    Thank you.

    Dear DBS,
It seems that you are bit irritated ove my comments. Please forgive me if my word caused you any inconvienience.

No, I am not against you wrting about films and film actors. We all love films and our favourite actors. I have enjoyed your articles about films and actors (the last one I remember was about Gamini Fonseka).

I agree with you that we can’t ignore the influence of tamil films in Tamil Nadu. But the reaction of tamil film dom to our problem is not geniune. Their aim is NOT to help Ilankai Tamils, but selling thrir film to Diaspora Tamils.

Take for example Seeman’s latest comment on Sinhalese! How stupid he is!

I am not critcising Asin, for ‘helping’ Tamils. But I do not feel grattitude towards her either! She is doing all these things to ease the ban imposed on her by some South Indian film artist organization. Her next movie ‘Velaayutham’ with Vijay to be sold to Tamils, thats is her worry!

SL Govt whie blocking all NGOs from helping Tamil uses Asin, Vivek and Salman Khan for its dirty propaganda. You know better than me!

Tamils need help fom anywhere from anybody! We should not crticise Aain or anyone for giving their hands to Tamils. But an avarage Tamil can’t go to Wanni.Asin can travel to Wanni with the first lady. How a Tamil who is prohibied from entering Wanni can help? You said those who criticise Asin do not do anything Tamil. I am not one of them who criticised Asin. But I know many who want to help Tamils but not allowed to! Ordinary Tamil are not glamours like Asin, may be!

Prraising Asin and expecting Tamils to be greatfull to her is something I did not expect from YOU.

By the way, yes I am ashamed for being one of the Tamils who were silent when you were villified!

But I do not understand your saying: Now everything is finished. There is no serious Tamil politics now

Do you mean when the LTTE is finished, everything is finished for Tamils?

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

I am sorry if I sounded irritated.

No what I mean is that LTTE has finished the Tamils for now. The immediate task is for Tamils to try and regain what they have lost. Restoration is the need of the hour. There can be no effective or worthwhile politics of the old mould for now.It would take time. There cannot be confrotational politics that has characterised Tamil resistance in the past.

This does not mean Tamils should give up all hope and surrender themselves to fate. It only means that the immediate need is to protect and preserve what we have left in a prudent manner while salvaging and trying to restore what we have lost. But one thing to understand is life will never be the same again

But I do have immense pride and confidence in the resilience and spirit of my people. What they need is space and time to revive themselves. We need a renaissance. That can be possible only in an atmosphere of amity and cooperation with the Sinhalese

Sadly as usual a vociferous minority without any feelings of guilt or remorse is engaging in stupid rhetoric and rabble rousing abroad. This is in stark contrast tothe mood of a shattered and battered people back home. There is an increasing disconnect between this arrogant, abrasive “Voice” abroad and the day to day life of people back home.

As for helping I do know that there are lots of Tamils in the Diaspora who are quietly helping their people back home. Apart from private &personal help to relatives and friends there are so many acts of collective help and help to institutions.

The reality is that such help to be really effective can only be done with Govt help and permission. It cannot be done regardless of govt disapproval. But lots of people are working through many small organizations. Once the govt and army officers on ground are convinced that the help is genuine without hidden agenda then people are helping. Apart from Tamils many Sinhalese are also helping. Actually the govt encourages locals and expatriates of Lankan origin more than foreigners in this respect.

I know of a reputed school in Jaffna that is housing and educating 500 students from the Wanni. The costs are paid for by alumni associations in Toronto and London.

I know of a retired CEO who has gone to the North and is helping re-settled farmers revive their agriculture. He deposits money in a bank to be used as collateral for loans given to farmers to buy water puunps and other agricultural equipment and material. The farmer applications have to be endorsed by the army officer f the area.

That is how things can be done nowadays. Until things improve we can only work through existing procedures while slowly trying to change the situation

As for Asin whatever her real or suspected motives I do think we have to be grateful for any type of help from these “outsiders”. The feedback I got from actual recipients of Asin’s aid was emotional and positive. They are simply grateful without imputing motives

It is hearbreaking to note the sadnees in DBS response.

GOSL and its supportes too display utter arrogance and shed from their responsibilty to help the war affected people.

Srilankan Tamils will may get a much delayed help financial.

But the wound may take few generations to heal.

  84. Tamils in Bangalore are maintaining their identity but Tamils in some parts of Srilanka are having identity problem. They might face the thread of over stayed guest symptom. So they are erasing their identity as Tamil and becoming relatives of the neighbors. Naturally they are shutting their lips to Tamil in public places. (Note Muslims as they are having no identity problem they dare to speak Tamil everywhere) This south Indian Tamil cinema release down as a villain in their struggle for survival. As they able to understand the stories their new blood relative are become skeptic. This situation is actually pathetic. As cinema is a powerful media it is reaching the unreached. So banning the Tamil cinema is good idea for harmonizing Srilanka but case is different in Eelam as actress Asin was worshiped in Jaffna.

  85. Mitt # 40 & DBS

As far I know the details provided by DBS about the music composer Vaidyanathan is correct. His father natively from Kerala and migrated to SL and settle down at Arali. After 1950 riots they moved back to India. His father was a teacher at JC. I think Balumahendra also studied at JC. V.C.Kuganathan born at Chankanai(Jaffna) and moved to India.

I really appreciate Asin’s imitative to help the war affected Tamil people and expect that rest of the “Kodampakam” should follow her. Seeman & Co who are on pro LTTE’s “Kick Back” should stop their nonsenses and try to do something worthwhile as Asin did. We are saying that Indian film stars boycott the IIFA but they did not do so on their own wish but Seeman & co put the pressure on them in threatening way and considering their long term economy situation, they simply avoid the festival. But what we achieved as result? Nothing I suppose. Even some Tamil Diaspora argued that Indian film stars should boycott IIFA while they celibate their Temple festivals, Community Functions, Sports Meetings……etc in a glorified way without worrying about their people back home. Same hypocrites are jumping into the Sri Lankan Air Lines and flying for holiday in Sri Lanka. We have to give a new life to our people who had suffered lot. We should find all the way in this regard.

  86. #80 & 81:

    Sorry for being racists.

You singhalease people are broad minded beautiful angels!! You and your singhalease elected govts. never killed thousands and thousands innocent Tamil people. You have never looted any Tamil shops or properties in SL. Ban Ki Moon is a vicious villain, investigating the most disciplined army in the world. Seeman and others should have celebrated the Tamil killings and admired the Singhalease Govt and their people, if they are not racists.

    Sorry for being racists

  87. Thank you for a great article once again DBSJ!

The information about the collaboration between the Thamizh and Sinhala cine world is very interesting and something I did not know in detail. I am glad you have a wide interest in these matters so we can learn too.

Thank you for highlighting Asin’s contribution to help suffering humans. I do not know how many of those who are making inflammatory comments have done anything to alleviate the suffering of any human being in this world apart from themselves.

In reply to J Muthu @ 23 you said, “There was a chance to get de-facto Tamil Eelam but the LTTE and EPRLF killed all chances of it”. Could you please spare me a few minutes of your valuable time to say when and how this was or point me towards an article that talks about it.

Please keep writing, even if one person changes their attitude after reading you article and works for peace and reconciliation, that would make a difference.

    May God bless you!

    Thank You……….DBSJ

  88. Dear Mr. Jeyaraj,

I do agree with your sentiment that boycott of Sri Lanka will not help the unfortunate Tamil people who were the victims of the war. I also agree with your statement that the LTTE did not negotiate a good deal for the Tamil people such as a Federal solution/devolution when they had the opportunity to do so. However, these valid points should not negate the fact that the Tamil people have been victimized by nationalist elements within the Sinhala community long before the advent of the LTTE or militant politics. Two generations of my family experienced state sponsored violence during the 1950’s, 1970’s, 1983 and post 1983. The ultimate tragedy was that the LTTE emulated the rabid nationalism of the Sinhala hardliners instead of building resistance based on universal ideals.

There is a fundamental difference between the developments in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka concerning the treatment of minorities/devolution. The Indian government in the 1960’s was smart enough to agree to devolution while fostering a common Indian identity. You could be a proud Tamil and a proud Indian. In Sri Lanka national identity depends on Sinhala identity. The only solution in Sri Lanka is to have a common identity that respects all communities and languages.

Also it is important that all detainees in SL custody be treated with dignity. There needs to be accountability when it comes to torture and murder when it is carried out by the state or a insurgent group like the LTTE.

  89. Asin seems to be an opportunist, not like an angel portrait by this article. She used this opportunity to max to counter the ban in South India. MR regime using these people for their max for PR exercises, bring in foreign exchange and subdue the anti Rajapaksa forces.

  90. DBSJ

Thanks again to an excellent article .But kindly note that Asin’s bravado in taking on the Tamil Hardliners is not an isolated act . She acted well on a script written and directed by the Authorities from New Delhi who assured her that she can boldly take the step and that they will take care of the rest and Tamil Nadu was advised by New Delhi to follow the follow up script and that is why you see that they swung in to action in arresting Vai Ko ,Nedumaran and Seeman and now Seeman is put in Jail for 1 year under NSA while Vai Ko and Nedumaran have got bail .

Also the Tamil Film Industry is keeping quite and not shouting aloud against Asin because they were warned by the Authorities both from New Delhi and TN that they will get a solid thrashing if they again play mischief in Ind-SL affairs .So in all it was a pre written script by the Centre and State and Asin was bold enough to play that role and I congratulate her for that bold step .

I am also happy that the Central and State Govenrment are taking steps to keep a check on mischief mongers who spread venom and hatred and spoiling any chance for the Tamils to live in dignity . These mischief mongers want the Tamils to live in perpetual misery so that they can continue their politics of hate and chauvinism .

  91. dear jey,
yet another good article by you it is not vaigai chandrasekar rather vagai chandrasekar who is an ardent dmk supporter.unfortunately jey i dont think the affairs of tamil nadu are not black and white as you think.the reason why guys like seeman are gaining credibility is becoz of lack of action by full time politicians like kalaignar and jayalalitha in solving certain problems affecting tamils and tamil nadu.

let us take for instance cauvery issue it is not only cauvery river which is causing anxiety among tamils since georgraphically tamil nadu is a lower riparian state it depends on other states for the river to flow to tamil nadu.andhra pradesh government wants to build a dam on palar river which flows through vellore district and enters the sea in kancheepuram district.kerala government wants to build a new mullaiperiyar damn instead of an old one the periyar river is lifeline of madurai, theni and ramanadapuram districts.

kerala government is hell bent on creating problems for tamil nadu it has announced another dam will built near amaravathy river in western tamilnadu .i still remember reading malayali writer paul zacharia writing about how 90% of kerala river water is flowing into arabian sea but malayalis dont have the heart to give the water to tamil nadu despite the fact that kerala has to depend on tamil nadu for rice, vegetables, fruits and other basic necessisities.

another issue that has been plaguing tamil nadu is killing of tamil fisherman earlier it was attributed to ltte mysteriously killing tamil fishermen and then putting blame on srilankan navy unfortunately ltte is no longer there hence it cant be blamed.even an arch foe like pakistan treats indian fishermen better than srilankan navy.

indian fishermen are arrested and lodged in pakistani jails whereas srilankan navy kills tamil fishermen ,throws the fishes into the sea ,destroys the fishing nets and damages the boats all becoz fishermen strayed into srilankan waters.i dont think it is a heinous crime to stray into neighbouring country’s waters after all poor fisherman does not where the border ends or starts.

so jey as long as these issues remains unresolved tamil anger will fester i request asin as we know here should voice her views against her own kerala governments acts then every tamil in tamil nadu will come to her support this is not gonna happen tigers may change their stripe but leopards dont change their spots.

malayali is a malayali he or she will never give up her homeland i have personally experienced .i would like to finish the comment with a funny anecdote i had a mallu colleague he belongs to nadar caste one can find nadar community predomineting nagercoil trivandrum region they are basically tamils becoz there is no nadar community in kerala social structure but since they are living in old travancore region they speak only malayalam he was arguing in favour of kerala’s stand on mullaiperiyar issue i was baffled this is a guy whose ancestors are from tamil nadu but he is arguing against tamilnadu then i realised the power of malayali nationalism and weakness of tamil nationalism.

  92. As an Indian, I feel asin went to see those orphans just to escape the wrath of Tamil film industry and save her career. Hadn’t her visit to lanka been politicized, she would not have done this.

A normal selfish soul, not worth politicizing or blocking her visit. Not just worth it.

  93. Anyway it is my wast of time to write you. It seems you are wasting your English writing talents.

I hope you will register my comment now.

  94. #61. “DBSJ has written this article in such a way that all the readers will fall in love with Asin.”.

I must confess I have also fallen in love with Asin

  95. Mr. DBS your this colmn is a big joke……….. Do you believe Asin is going to change Tamil Nadu film industry…………….? She is an actress. Money can make her to Dance, sing and laugh.

……Do you think Tamil Nadu film industry is really like Tamil peoples and want to help tamil peoples. They are acting they are lolving tamils…………you know why because of Western country Tamil diapora……..it is big market for them and they don’t want to loose it. That is the only reason they are so nice with Tamils.

We don’t know you are real moron or writing on purpose.
    Regards

  96. I googled for IIFA & found this article

Read it with great interest cos Asin is somebody I like . Found the article informative &interesting

My regard for Asin has gone up

  97. I read in Dayan Jayatilleka ‘s comment to one of his articles in transcurrents that Tamils had rolled on a hot tarred road in fromt of Sun God Prabakaran portrait

Why cant Tamils fall on the hot tarred roads of Jaffna in a row for the glamorous Asin to step on them and walk without getting her lotus feet suffer the Jaffna sun? I am sure they will relish Asin stepping on their bodies with her pretty feet? They may even kiss them/Ha! ha! ha! (just joking guys)

    You are a weirdo………..DBSJ

  98. Thank you for a great article with lots of info DBS

Dont let these idiots stop you from writing and telling the truth. It’s time these tiger supporters tucked their tails in and start eating grass

  99. She;s sweet. She’s smart. She’s bold. She’s beautiful

    That’s our darling Asin

Thanks Jeyaraj sir for this write -up about our beloved cutie-pie Asin’s benevolence&courage

  100. Hey you Eelam Tamils!

Stop attacking our Asin from God’s own country Kerala

You ungrateful wrtetches dont deserve her large-hearted generosity but stop your vicious attacks on her

  101. I wish Asin had bestowed her generosity on the poor people of Tamil Nadu. Thhey would have showered her feet with kisses and rubbed the dust on her chappals on their foreheads unlike these Jaffna Tamils who are mocking and insulting her

  102. Hi DBSJ

Why is the hell you are doing… just … no more comments.. i really worry people still believe your writings… bad thing for tamils, god made people like to you spoil us….

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

  103. Dear DBSJ

A big heartfull of Thanks for this article. It is of this kind of help is the immediate need for NE people, though some morons foolishly think otherwise.

It is necessary to talk peace and settle all the issues but prefereably with a gun in the pocket. VP had the gun but never settled for peace.

I read it somewhere that one of the holocaust survivor taught himself through the power of his mind that nazis can only harm his “body” and “NOT HIM”; through the expansion of his mental energy and power he survived Nazi persecutions and remained a source of inspiration for the Jew Communitiy. I pray to almighty that all my Tamil people in NE earn such a mental power and energy to overcome their present condition.

It was interesting to see your comments on the question of Tamil Nationalism in TN. I bet an Independent Tamil Nation was never a serious agenda for Tamils in TN. Primarily that is the way because the Dravidian Movement was looking for revamp of the social structure; and so acheiving an Indpendent State was never on the Dravidian movement agenda. Infact not even independence from British was in their agenda. Revamp of the old social order was their primary concern.

In IT world they talk about “Must to have Features” and “Nice to have Features”. Independent Tamil Nadu delinked from India is a “Nice to have” types.

The “Must to have Feature” of the Dravidian Movement is still to be achieved. That is the right social structure to engage people in social intercourse without Caste or nativity bias or what they call an egalitarian society with an Athenian Mind. It may take another century to reach that stage considering today’s scenario in TN. There is no tall leader in TN to drive the society that way. Yet the economic structure and today’s social structure is such that we dont need any Tall leaders rather no leader is needed. The Media, Google, and all the electronic gadgets will ensure that goal.

Only after that goal is achieved or reasonably achieved, the Tamils in TN will think of an Independent Nation. Only then comes the special treatment for Singhala chauvinists for their Vanni genocide in circa 2009. Give it 125 years or so. This is not too much of a period for history. The batons will be passed on to the generations.

However bad be the VP, he has taught Tamils, an institutitionilised thinking. After he left there is TGTE, etc; and now the KP. VP seem to have remained a Teetotaler and have respecteded womenfolk. I have not heard about rape by LTTE or by any Tamil Miliitants raping women in SL. You please let us know if I am wrong. However, SLA and SL chauvinists seem to me use rape as a weapon in some sense.

    Vinai vithaithavan Vinai kandipaga Aruppan.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

Whatever capacity Tamils had for independent or original thought was destroyed by VP. Sadly as Willy Shakes said “the evil that men do lives after them”. The morons he created in the Diaspora are stuttering around like headless chickens… As for VP He’s gone for ever to eternal sleep but we who are left must plod on……….

  104. Dear DBS
So according to you Asin has gone to SL to primarily help the Tamils and by chance she happend to act in a cinema with Salman khan. Is that right?
Do you think you can fool every body by writing good English?

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

No that is not what I wrote and I dont intend trying to fool anybody but I cant help it if you are really a fool or pretend to be a fool

Also I dont think I write good Englisg but I can certainly see from your “Comment” that you cant comprehend even basic English

Why dont you see a Japanese movie without sub-titles? ditto effect as reading this…

  105. OK for the sake of those who saying DBSJ should write about some “Other issues” –

what happened to TGTE, they have disappeared from the cyberspace for the past few weeks –

    http://www.govtamileelam.org/

or else, what about some “citizen journalist” activism? There seem to be none whatsoever….some only looking for a magic wand, and others to do toil on their ‘beliefs’ and behalf.

  106. Thankyou for your reply, still I am not convinced, I dont give a damn about tamilnadu politician or film artist. you know more than me they all brilliant artist. Forget them all we tamils need a peaceful life in our own land, which is not happening now as you know. You sholuld know our peaceful protest brutally put down by mad sinhala idiots. We tamils never had a leader like nelson mandela or Jinna, what we had brutal selfish caste base leaders like Sir ponnambalam ramanathan, Pannakam amirthalingam or even mad piraba. As you know we better off with our own tamilstate for beloved tamil people provided good democrat tamil leaders. Do not think I am a dreamer, i pray god and which will happen soon. The way srilanka goes even sinhala people leave for good.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

mmm…..If Tamils and Sinhalas leave who’s left the Muslims?

Here’s a song to lull you into sleep so that you can dream of Eelam ………

    “Kanavin Mayalogathiley
    Naam Kalanthey Ullasam Kaanbome….

(SIvaji & Savithri singing in the voices of TMS&PS in “ANnayin AAnai”)

  107. What is the need for a Sinhala state to distroy a small state like Eelam ?
Why not all Srilankan Sinhalese accept as Tamil language (compulsory learning in schools) and accept Tamil as one of the official language in the country?
Is it necessary to separate North from East? What is wrong if they stay together as on unit
Why Sinhalese wants to settle in Tamil area? If they hate the Tamils so much why do they want their land

Fewer in number and they were when to Malaysia from India. But in Sri Lanka Sinhalease and Tamils when from India and living like brothers and sisters since Sri Lanka came in to excistance. Therefore they are now Tamil in Malaysia but Tamils are partners and have every right to live in the country as equals enjoy the freedom and previlages as you Sinhalese do.
is it worth to fight tooth and nail in Srilanka for more previlges and get destroyed? This is n ot for more previlage but equal without any discremination via jobs. education and freedom without any haressments from the Sinhala dominated government. If people from uphill country would live in peace with Sinhalese, why not Tamils from north/east?Here again they were imported by british goverment to get cheap labour but they are not born and breed in this country as Tamils and Sinhalese.
is it true in the allegation that Srilankan Tamils prolong their fight to migrate and live in a more pasturous country? Absolutely there is no truth in that

    Interesting response Mr Martin Thomas

For the very same reason..since Tamils are Smaller in number in Srilanka (minority ) and Srilankan Tamils are originally people from India settled in 10th century and later, Sinhales deny equal rights to Srilankan Tamils.

Great. Sinhalese and Srilankan Tamils think alike.

Their Eelaam dream and the associated maneuvers with the help of the Western buddies only help to extend the misery of their own who are by products of their past deeds.
    ——-

It is too simplified statement to explain the root cause of the misery of Srilankan Tamils

Even with No LTTE or Eelamist around, the product of the past deeds of Srilankans as a whole (Sinhalese & Tamils) would haunt srilanka for generations to come.

“I am not critcising Asin, for ‘helping’ Tamils. But I do not feel grattitude towards her either! She is doing all these things to ease the ban imposed on her by some South Indian film artist organization. Her next movie ‘Velaayutham’ with Vijay to be sold to Tamils, thats is her worry!”

I can understand your genuine feeling. May be you are right. But whatever it is affected people got something end of the day. That’s what we (They) want now. As you said “Tamils need help from anywhere from anybody”. Did we get anything by Seemann’s stupid protest? Did we achieved anything by Viko’s beautiful speech?. Asin may had selfish motive to go to Jaffna. But after she saw the victims of the war, she really touched. People who saw her in Jaffna / Vanni told me this.

    Naga # 06

“But I know many who want to help Tamils but not allowed to! Ordinary Tamil are not glamours like Asin, may be!”

I agree with you. But we know the fact that there many elements within Tamil circles and outside the Tamils looking for the case against SL Government. If Government relaxes the access to the affected area, these people come and collect the stories and release the manipulated stories to the outside world. But if we collectively projected mission to help our people and prove our case ( Not like Vankamun) we could have get access anyway. Sometimes I do think that what could happen If we had a the same situation in Jaffna as we had in Vanni( May 2009). I’m sure that things will be other way around.

  112. “Five medical doctors were brought down from India at Asin’s expense. Over 300 surgeries were performed in Jaffna and around 100 in Vavuniya. Spectacles costing 5,000 rupees each were provided by Asin. There is a waiting list of 4,000 requiring eye surgery and Asin says she will bear the cost.”
    —————————————————————-

What a lovely woman. Beautiful on the inside as well as outside. If everyone does something like this what would the sum total add up to? I wonder what seeman is doing for the tamils of srilanka with the weath he has accumulated? Sinhala chauvinists are only building up people like these. One day if people like these come to power in tamilnadu, the lack of a political solution to the tamil problem in srilanka, will be the cause. Just like VP thanked JR Seeman and co will thank the rajapakshes.

    Sooooo Mr Thomas,

Do you consider the Indian Tamils who populate the up-country plantations not part of your concept of being “Tamil”?

Interesting, given the amount of support that the Tamil Nadu Tamils have given to you Jaffna boys over time.

On the other hand, your thinking is so typical of most of the Jaffna Tamils, who do consider anyone else not form Jaffna as beneath them. That includes up-country Tamils, Batticaloa Tamils and Vanni Tamils who you guys used as cannon fodder in your great struggle.

  114. It was really good to read this article Mr.Jayaraj. You relate so many diifferent informations into one nice article. I am so happy to learn about our long relationship with Tamil cinema

  115. Look at the lovely Asin with her radiant face and glowing complexion. Then look at the rough Seeman with his ugly face and dark skin

Look at Asin’s wonderful kindness in sponsoring 150 children and arranging for 300 eye surgery cases. Then look at Seeman uttering racist hate speeches and pointless protest processions

Who will anyone with common sense support?

    Asin of course

Seeman is not fit even to polish Asin’s sandals

  116. Here’s some good news. The Indians have charged Seeman under the national security act. Minimum one year jail they say

  117. I was happy to see that Jeyarajah has written about Thavamani Devi from Vadamaratchy who became popular actor in Thamil cinema

She was my grand aunt and came from a very high caste high class family. Her uncle was honourable Balasingam ,legislative councillor those days

Her family was shocked at her behavious and threw her out from family. We were strictly told not to have anything to do with her

She was very famous once but was later without acting roles. she was very poor in her last days and used to live in Rameshwaram near Sivan temple

I went to see her once and she spoke kindly but was too proud to accept the money I offered

I am glad at least one person remembered her to write Jeyarajah

  118. I think the adorable Asin should act in a Sinhala film and donate her fees to her trust. It will make Seeman&co raving mad

Thomas Martin ‘s statement must serve as an eye opener to People from Tamilnadu. It is not too late to realise the truth.

Cho Ramasamy, a wise journalist from Tamilnadu, even in eighties (when Tamil Sympathy for Srilankan Tamils was at its peak) used to warn Tamilnadu people, not to blindly support Srilankan Tamils. I used to think, Cho has no Tamil sentiments. Now i understand he is a wise man.

    Mahesh,
    What do you think?

  120. I am shocked by some responses here belittling and ridiculing Asin’s fine act of compassion in promoting eye clinics and sponsoring children

Except for a few and of course the writer not one word of gratitude from the so called suffering Tamils

I appreciate MR. DBS Jeyaraj’s efforts to spotlight Asin’s action and his valiant efforts to extract grudging gratitude from his compatriots. But I think its a futile exercise Mr.Jeyaraj

  121. This is my prediction

Salman Khan kneels before Asin and fixes her footwear in a scene from London Dreams movie

There will come a time when Seeman, Radharavi and all the Tamil film industry will kneel at Asins feet and pay their respects

    Wait and see

You asked me about my views regarding cho ramasamy.

In the eighties he was the first person to warn about sri lankan tamils issue and also the ltte in particular.

    then we never understood him.

    later he was proved right.

he will also say that the LTTE has to be destroyed and also that the tamils should be seen to be given equal status by the sinhalese.

the first part is over. the second part i am not sure will come to pass.

in certain aspects i could not concur with him. like he gave a clean chit to the JR.

he said that JR had to contend with the JVP in the south. he would by that imply that JR was a prisoner of political situation.

    i don’t concur with that.

also now he along with the hindu ram would extend their unabashed support to the MR and the SL govt.

you can say that LTTE used the human shield. in that way they have also committed war crime.

also this sri lankan state has committed innumerable war crimes.

which govt would use air power against rebels. which govt would shell their dwelling place indiscriminately.

you can go on and on.

innocents do die in the battle. but you cannot justify these actions of the SL state.

cho ramasamy turns a blind eye on these matters and only accuses the LTTE.

he is a brilliant advocate and he uses his powers of persuation to defend these actions of the SL state. and also in many cases he turns a blind eye on them.

  124. dear jey,
i appreciate asin for yeomen service she rendered to tamils in yaypanam one cant overlook it.unfortunately as you know every south indian actress goes to bollywood only thru kollywood that is how sridevi actress went and that is the traditional route.asin after being number one in kollywood wanted a promotion so she also took the traditional route to bollywood.she acted in hindi version of ghajini partnering amir khan suddenly she became famous and though she was not exactly flooded with offers she had handful of films.her second film london dreams bombed thus her dream of making in bollywood began to unravel and she was forced to come back to kollywood and i believe she is acting along with vijay in either kavalkaran or velayutham i dont know exactly the name of the film.suddenly since she had built a very good rapport with eternal bollywood most elibgible bachelor salman khan i guess she got a role in a film called ready.since salma khan was flummoxed by the sinhalese gesture during iifa he decided to have shooting in srilanka instead of mauritius i dont see anything altruistic in both asin as well as salman khans gesture.most of the stars who landed in iifa dont have any market in tamilnadu hence they did not bother about the threat of boycott.hence you cant attribute bravery or altruism to salman khans, vivek oberois, hrithik roshans lol.jey i am your well wisher and a fan i love your writings i have learnt a lot but i believe that you got to be much more critical about srilankan authorities and its political structure.i dont think everything is alright in northern part of srilanka .i read yesterday in transcurrents how ex ltte cadres in detention camps are being ill treated .jey i accept that eelam is a dream which should have happened but did not and i dont think it is gonna happen i am not a idealist but you have to use your critical faculties to come up with hard hitting and incisive analysis so that tamils in north srilanka plight is exposed to the world at large this is one of the ways thru which you can contribute to your fellow tamils.

  125. Jeyaraj I am visiting your site after a long gap and very happy to see you writing forcefully and sensibly without any gap…

SL tamils have paid a heavy price for having jokers like Nedumaran and Vaiko as their spokesmen…not to speak of other *MK politicians who treat the issue like a transit lounge to visit whenever their final destination is the Chennai Fort George..

Now this Seeman is the latest who sees this as a convenient pedestal to launch his political career. Tamil people at the end of day are smart and they have shown vaiko & co. their rightful place…

  126. DBSJ

Is it possible for a non profit body like UN etc to create a North Eastern Rehabilitation Relief fund where people all over the world can contribute funds for the same .Might be the funds can have schemes like sponsoring a Child’s education , sponsoring a medical operation , sponsoring a house construction etc etc .
Once such a fund is in place then Government of India can take a first step in making a contribution first followed by Government of Tamil Nadu and it would be a great gesture of Solidarity if Government of Tamil Nadu makes one day’s salary of all its Government employees to contribute for this fund .Once the Central and State Government in India makes their contribution I am sure all other private enterprises , Philanthropists , Cinema stars etc and public at large would also join in contributing funds for the same . This will also help the Diaspora contribute to it . Why even the Sinhalese people will join in the same .The only thing is that this fund should be under the control of a Neutral Body like UN etc so people will not have any suspicion as to how these funds will be utilized .
Can u give ur comments on this or if possible write a separate article on how people all over the world can help reconstruct the NE part of SL and show their solidarity to the Tamils as well as facilitate an environment for peace and harmony there .

  127. 85. Stephen Jones :- while the Lankan government seems determined to keep the Tamils until massive military occupation as in Kashmir, and steal their land for military camps without compensation he’s always going to have a lot of support. Incidentally, Rambukwella has announced today that the government is going to keep all the soldiers and all the High Security Zones in the North; no mention of even a rupees compensation for all the land they’ve stolen, or explanation of why the country needs to be occupied massively when the war is over.

How many years did USA occupy Japan after the war was over & allies occupy Germany? Was any permission obtained from the native people or compensation paid? When Vietnam war was over and Vietnam wanted to normalise relations with USA the latter only agreed to do so if Vietnam signs a document that their people will not sue USA for using Napalm and agent orange which left thousands of Vietnamese burnt, infertile or producing deformed children. Did USA pay compensation? Did they pay compensation for the atom bomb which killed or maimed nearly 2 million Japanese civilians?

  128. DBS I used to sympathise with you and accuse Ltte for vilify you now I feel that I was wrong.

DBS why did it not occurred to you this Asin,Obrey,Namal,Shrianti acts are not in the same line of lies, comedy drama and deceptions perpetuated by Weerawansa while on salin drip?

Cho Ramasamy is a Comedian and Political broker. So, I dont think one needs to give a damn about him.

Guys in chennai – watch. He never attacks Stalin but only MK. Right from the early days of Stalin in politics, Cho has ensured he does not openly side with Stalin or criticize him. A wily move!! But Why? Is it just because he is a broker and has stakes in politics board. Remember he brokered between MK and Moopanar in 1996 just to save his skin for being an advisor for Jayalalitha. He had argued for Subramania Swamy (to be given one Lok Sabha Seat) one “megalomania” of cursed TN politics in 1996, but MK didn’t allow that.

People who remember Akilan’s Chitirapaavai would remember Stalin also acted in that TV serial in Doordharshan days. Cho praised Stalin well in that function … those days were early days for Stalin’s political life.

What a Comedian this Cho is! Any idiot on those days would have given that kind warning about SL Tamils in Chennai. Only those who were blind couldn’t see designs. During early 80s the high Caste Jaffna Tamils(sic) came to chennai for interim settlement before moving european/american destinations. I hope the readers here can recognize how in those days Jaffna Tamils behaved. Cho’s warning were based only on that. But actual sympathy in TN was for the entire Tamil Community and their livelihood in SL. Let us keep in mind that India was very poor comparative scale on those days with huge unemployment and attendant social problems. The behaviour of SL high Caste Jaffna Tamils(sic) in TN was the single most important reason for the slide in support and sympathy for SL Tamils when they needed the most apart from 1983.

Those Jaffna Tamils were generally rich and never took pains to understand the undercurrent in TN. They also used to mock at the economic status of the people here, I remember quite well of an incident.

I think Cho is a villain in this whole drama. His comments did neither help Indian Tamils nor help the SL Tamils. If some one claims he is right, what a naiveity it is!!

  133. I was wondering if thenuwara would let jayalalitha trample all over him, what he would let the lovely asin do to him. She could try her hand at eye surgery or even brain surgery.

I agree that GOSL has committed war crime and humanatarian aid should reach all affected people.

However, Should Indian Tamils view Srilankan conflict from the Tamil point of view, especially, when Srilankan Tamils treat plantation/ uphill country Tamils with disgust and consider these Persons of Indian origin as another community?

Tamilnadu Tamils should consider this conflict as political in nature, and look in to it from India’s view, rather than emotionally charged Tamil view point.

I believe Tamil sentiments are aroused and exploited for self interest (to settle score with their political rivals Sinhalese) by pro Eelam group, led by Jaffna Tamils.

  135. dear jey,
    # 139 mahesh i wonder whether you are like the character of vikram in anniyan you seem to be in the same boat as i am lol .remember vikram will exhibit his janus face before the court and prakash raj will be seething like that i concur with you cho ramaswamy is a brilliant political writer though i would not call him extraordinary given the face that his background was affluent he is not a guy given to emotions but i like his sarcasm, wit and more than his he has got a guy called sathya in his team who is really hillarious.i happen to read this weeks thuglak for the past one month only i have been buying thuglak i stopped buying thuglak just before may 2009 he has been against ltte and its antics accepted but when u deal with guys like jayawardanes, dissanayakes, and now rajapakshes i guess srilankan tamils need a strong leadership i wish praba had joined the political mainstream this would have helped srilankan tamils a lot.cho is an idealist or rather a guy who believes in rule of law or rather a guy believes in ideal state of affairs.he may be right against ltte but rather naive when it comes to sinhalese leadership this weeks editorial made me seethe in anger defending rajapakshe against united nations as if human casualties were justified and all blame should be put on the door steps of tigers.dbs jey always writes that most of the tamil nationalist are anti brahmins sometimes i feel they have a justification let me be clear i also belong to brahmin community most of the brahmins have been opposed to srilankan tamil nationalism let it be jayalalitha,n.ram, cho i guess it is a pay back time for dravidian leaders lol .some times i feel tamil nationalism reached its peak when it should not have done in 1960s and declined in late 80s and 90s and died on the shores of nandikadal.hmm what a tragic end i hope some genuine guy resurrects it.

  136. DBSJ,

I think you are in a vivacious mood. Penning article about a film personality (it is understandable).

Also you are quoting many songs, particularly from the oldies.

    Nice.

The way you write makes me feel you will be a good writer of cinema.

You also seem to follow International cinema.

I wonder how you manage all this.

    Elementary my dear Watson, elementary.

  140. Most of the tamil would agree that threat issueed by Seeman against singalese students is completed uncalled for. However, we all mostly agree that it was a good idea that we were against IIFA in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka was hosting this just to show the world that peace has returned and also everyone in India including tamil nadu is on their side.

Why would Asin go in military aircrafts to vanni if she really wanted to help tamils. She could have actually asked the government to let her go on her own and meet people without any supervision. Why can’t she ask the government to remove HSZs and let people live in their own land. Why can’t she ask the givernment to release all young detainees from prisons? Why can’t she ask them to let her go to Mulli Vaaikkaal to see the destruction herself.

If she is free to all the above I believe all the tamils will support Asin in her endeveaours to help tamils in Sri Lanka.

  142. Tamils should be grateful for Asin. Especially Srilankan Tamils. Instead, they are here attacking here with ugly messages. So much for the Srilankan Tamil “culture.” Srilankan Tamils should realise that non-Tamils won’t give a hoot abou them if they continue with this narrowmindedness. Malayalis are very important in the current Indian administration and they won’t take kindly to Asin being ridiculed by Tamil extremists.

  143. #43 Mahesh and

In general Tamil’s perspective in particular Eezham Tamil’s perspective is very well laid out by both bloggers.

Tamils in general including Eezham Tamils are extremely doing well where ever they settle, except in Srilanka. Tamils are suffering only within Srilanka due to discriminative policies of successive Srilankan Governments since independence from Britain in 1948. If an Eezham tamil can be a deputy prime minister of Singapore, it is a proof of humongous contribution of tamils to their adopted countries. Tamils are slowly influencing and actively involved in internal politics where ever they live and soon will be in global politics.

I hope Sinhala government will realize this reality and settle Tamil’s issue for good. Otherwise they have to learn it in a hard way.

  144. Simply cannot understand why the Tamil Nadu people is disgusted over Asin involvement in help the Tamils in Sri Lanka and blah blah over boycott of Asins films in Tamil Nadu.
What about Dhoni is from Tamil Nadu now captaining the India Cricket team and currently invoved in a Test Series with Sri Lanka. Why there is no boycott or protest or other disruption for Dhoni. These Tamils in India is a bunch of hippocrits.

  145. Hi DBSJ

I agree with your view. It is foolish and thoughtles that Seeman and others still should Tamil Home Land Slogans. But, instead of praising Asin for her generosity, you should said that she has done it diplomaticaly and briliantly in order defuse the attack on her. If she had really wanted to help, she could have done it long time ago.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

Yep! But somethings need not be stated explicitly i think. Some need to be stated very bluntly

When no Tamil film star particularly those beating their breasts about things like Eelam & LTTE & VP have not done any help how does one expect Asin to do this?

Fact is that she is helping after experiencing Sri Lanka. I dont want to impute motives but simply acknowledge her help. The actual recipents are so grateful but I just dont understand why some others who are not in any need are simply looking at this help critically instead of simply saying “Thank You”

Yes she is diplomatic but the scale of her generosity goes far beyond diplomatic requirements

    Thank You Asin

  146. DBS Jeyaraj

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

People may be generous or do charity for different reasons. The feel good factor, expecting merit after death, for publicity, for popularity…….. Lots of reasons

But the fact remains that those acts are indeed acts of generosity. The recipients are happy and grateful

The govt may derive propaganda mileage out of Asin. She herself is using it to deflect criticism by the Tamil extremists

But the fact remains that people have benefited. The persons who benefited will remain appreciative regardless of any motive imputed or attributed

So once again I say Thank You Asin. Mihavum Nandri Penne…..Nee Nallai Iruppaai Amma

  147. Hi DBS

“But the fact remains that people have benefited. The persons who benefited will remain appreciative regardless of any motive imputed or attributed.”

I agree with you. It is a wiin win situation for both Asin and SriLankan Tamil. Thanks for clearing my confused mind.

  148. I am so very gald to hear that Asin is not a Tamil.

    But she’s “Dravidian” Mangalaya…..DBSJ

  149. DBSJ
Your article on Tamil cinema is informative and can be appreciated especially by those who have an interest in Tamil music, drama etc. while your response to #23 Muthu and #96 Naga is even better.

  150. 151. sjoseph;- You are again on the correct frequency. Tamils discriminate against their own but also say the Sinhalese discriminate against them! But 65% of them live quite happily outside their traditional area’s in SL. I don’t blame them at all because they too are human and they are my close friends. Tamils in Sydney display cast and status differences like hell and as a Singhalese for me, it is very interesting. But nevertheless I love all of them!! With some I have a drink in the pub but cannot do so at their home because no one knows that their man is drinking!!

  151. #148 Asin does not resemble a Tamil, now I hear Jeyalalaitha is also not a Tamil. I can comprehend this. Tamils are of dark colour and have round faces, they are short, stocky and Tamil women have large bellies. Tamil men wear a moustache (about 90% of them)

  152. Great article yet again. Bring back lot of fond memories when listening to Jamuna Rani and H R Jothipala. I thought I was standing at a bus stop in Borelle about 8.30 in the night around 1960s. Remember those tea buotiques
supplying music for the passers by through their speakers.
You don’t get that in Toronto, buddy.

    Thanks DBSJ.

  153. 162 peacelover.

Please don’t think that life for the Tamils or any other migrants from the Sub-continent in places like Malaysia and Singapore is very rosy. Of course there are some educated and rich few living it up. But there are lot of poverty among Indians and Tamils living in these places.
They know their place. Most of the low jobs like cleaning and sweeping of streets are done by them. The areas where these people congregate are called little Indias, and from a distance one can tell we are approaching a little India, because these sections are normally dirtier than the rest of the city. When you talk to these people, they explain the discrimination they suffer.
For example, if you are working in a Bank, you will be the last person to get a promotion.

The Deputy Prime Minister post in S’ pore is a bit of a token.

Let’s hope that in Sri Lanka the most derserving person gets the top job regardless of the creed.

  154. Kusumadevi

You should learn about Hindu caste system. All North Indians are not Brahimins. And all Brahamins are not North Indians. There are Tamils who belong to Brahamin caste and they don’t come from North India.

May be you are confused with Ariyan theory. Do some research and you will find Aryan theory is a myth and it was propagated by White man to devide and rule India.
Max Muller, the father of Aryan theory (who had close connection with East India Company though he was a German,) later back tracked about his Aryan race theory.
But it was too late, Hitlar was already became obsessed with Mullers findings.

There was a time Tamils called themselves Ariya Thamilar or rather Ariya Dravider (here Ariya means Noble) but when Ariyan became a label they dropped it because they didn’t want to lose their Dravidian identity.

However because of the slave mentality North Indians had because of British rule loved to believe the Aryan theory. Now they are changing and agree that Dravidians of South India are originally North Indians and they too (North Indians) are Dravidians.

Asin is a Dravidian from South India, not only Asin
Iyswariya Rai, Shillpa Chetty and many more from Bollywood are also Dravidians (Tamils, Malayalees, Telugu, Tulu, Kannada etc.)

    Hope this helps!

Solved is hardly the word. The only slogans you hear now in Kashmir are ‘Azadi’ (Freedom!) and ‘India out’.

MoUs with the mining companies have resulted in a state of near war in the affected communities in the centre of India.

  157. #167: Aney pou! Now Kusuma you are going to be disappointed again. I know, I know.. what’s the point in bringing a Dravidian to Lanka.. Salmon (or Tuna, as he is sometimes referred to) should have brought a pure bred Aryan so people like you could have been happy, but take heart, my child, in the fact that Asin is a “Scrubbed Dravidian” – in other words, she is as white skinned as the Kandyan Sinhalese (or, are you, by the way, from the beaches).. so, Asin is essentially an Aryan, masquerading as a Dravidian.

  158. #132: Puvana says of Thavamani Devi “She was my grand aunt and came from a very high caste high class family”.

ha ha ha.. Devi is high caste/class because she is related to you?! This is what ego does to people.

HOWEVER, I do not accept the treatment she was offered when her vamping career didn’t survive. People are hypocrits – they want to go and enjoy the movies and watch the women shake their you-know-whats, but when their luck falls, those same women get trashed. Why not look after a good vamp? Is it beneath us? Your so called “high class” family has just proven that it’s a low class family.

But, you, of the high ego, have proven at least you had the heart to try to help, a deviation from the low class family you belong to – and hence, will be accepted within my brahmin family as one of our own.

  159. The film industry is full of hypocracy. Add to that our vain and empty emotional pull towards the image screen and you have a fantastic concoction of stupidity.

Seeman wants Asin, just like Semen wants Sin. But, because he cannot get her, he has decided to go against her, in the hope that he will get a chance to kiss and makeup some day.

Asin, for her part, is milking this to her max. Obviosuly, she does the SL trip with doctors on board to show Tamils of TN that she cares. And I am not questioning her caring nature – after all, she is white, and what better feeling than to have the black Jaffna manwoman fall at her feet.

My hats off to you for picking such a fantastic bombshell (or dumbshell?) to portray in your site – this is the best way to attract some attention to your writing.

  160. #121: mmm…..If Tamils and Sinhalas leave who’s left the Muslims?

Yes, Sir, Muslims indeed. By getting themselves categorized as Muslims, they have made sure they distinctly identified, so that when Tamils and Sinhaputras leave, Muslims will have all the island to themselves. VP was such a brilliant man – he made sure Muslims will get their own identity by asking them to leave Vadamaratchi.

You ask what Muslims what they speak at home – it’s Tamil, so why refer to “Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims” – Muslims are Tamils.

  161. Sri Lankan Tamils needs to set aside their hatred and work towards building peace. Hatred and violence have been the hallmarks of Tamil nationalism for far too long. Hatred and violence have destroyed the Sri Lankan Tamil community from within.

Sri Lankan Tamils have been too busy screaming and shouting and pointing fingers at the Sinhalese to see that their own community has been eaten from inside.

If Sri Lankan Tamils continue along their insular, racist and bigoted path they will wipe themselves out completely and have no one else to blame.

Sri Lankan Tamils still haven’t come to grips with the fact that whether they like it or not they are going to have to live with the Sinhalese.

The Sri Lankan Tamils will always be a minority in Sri Lanka and the Sinhalese people will always have a greater say in things because they are the overwhelming majority.

Part of the problem with Sri Lankan Tamils is that they have an inflated idea of themselves as rulers of the island. They want more than a Tamil Nadu and they will never get it.

If Sri Lankan Tamils want peace they will have to learn to co-exist with the Sinhalese, Muslims and other Sri Lankans. They will have to learn that other people have problems as well. They will have to learn that they will not be able to dominate or rule the Sinhalese majority. They will have to learn that the Sinhalese culture and language is the dominant one on the island. If Tamils want respect for their culture and language they ought to give respect to others.

Sri Lankan Tamils have a lot to contribute to Sri Lanka. But their hatred and bigotry towards non-Tamils is standing in the way. The grandiose dreams of the idiot diaspora are standing in the way of development and peace building.

Many are still smarting from the defeat of the LTTE, their cheeks red with slap marks. The only way to get rid of that pain is through peace building, not through screaming “Tamil pride!!” when there is nothing to crow about.

As far as the NE states problem is concerned we talk with the rebel leaders and enter into agreements with them.

For example we recently talked with the Naga leader also during the tenure of the BJP.

But you people see only adversity is everything.

Try to learn things from others.

India could be a good example for the whole world.

The problem lies in the freedom struggle.

In India we got freedom after much of a struggle against the British. It made us all United.

Whereas sri lanka got freedom as a ripple effect or the domino effect. you earned freedom without fighting much.

  172. 190. Uz

I have travelled all over India. i do not find any discrimination anywhere.

Even if you do not know the language it is not a bother. People tend to help others.

Execept in Tamil Nadu and some other parts of may be Kerala Hindi is spoken or understood everywhere.

In Hyderabad you can live knowing only Hindi.

Now a days many North Indians, from UP, Bihar and orissa have come to Tamil Nadu and have set up pani poori shops and also are employed as menials in Hotels.

In the past 10 years the profile of Chennai has changed.

Now a days shop keepers necessarily have to know Hindi because there are many North Indians in Chennai.

Mind you this is not colonization driven by the Govt.

These people come on their own searching for a livelihood.

Even now the assurances of Pandit Nehru is honored by the government of India.

If you want to desperately see any thing wrong in India you can do it. You have full freedom to do that.

But those things are not facts.

People anywhere in India are good.

There was a time when the Tamil Nadu politicians whipped up the passions of the people using the anti Hindi agitation.

Now a days people do not care a fig for their anti hindi agitations.

even when the anti hindi agitation was at its peak many tamilians would take a private tuition for hindi after school hours.

Hindi Miss is a popular person after the school hours. He/she kept engaged the students after their school hours.

    I agree with DBSJ’s comments.
End of the day everything comes to personal/indiviual survival.
VP conducted the meaning less war for his own survival…
KP likes to join GOSL for his own survival…

Diaspora idiots like Kuppan and Mappan supported/support LTTE for their own survival aswell.

But as you said out of this what ordinary people get is important…if they get the benifit it is good for the society.

  174. “Prof. Sundrampillai who wrote Manonmaneeyam sings that Kannadam, Telugu,Malayalam &Thulu were born of the Tamil mother’s womb”

Tamils think everything came from Tamil. They have an inflated sense of ego which is ugly for everyone else. I don’t think Tamils realise this. Same story is sung in Sri Lanka: “Sinhala language comes from Tamil and the Sinhalese are all Tamils who converted to Buddhism”. It’s getting lame, and laughable. Tamils need to grow up. Their need to claim everything as coming from Tamil betrays an inferiority complex.

  175. 195. Sukhil

The fact is that the Tamil is an ancient language. No doubt about it. When the Tamils feel proud of that that is justified.

    Why should anyone feel offended.

Many a word would have been borrowed from among different languages. Tamil could have borrowed words from other languages and also other languages could have borrowed words as well from Tamil.

I don’t feel anything wrong in feeling proud of ones ancestry.

  176. 196 Mahesh.

Tamils have right to be proud of their language, but they need to stop making silly outlandish claims to feed their Tamil ego. From claming Harappa, Ravana, Kannada, Telugu, Malayali, Australian aborigines and even Sanskrit! It’s sad. This obsession reflects poorly on Tamils. Tamils tend to think that the world revolves around them when it doesn’t. Their language is not any superior to any other language. Like I said, this desperation to claim that everything comes from Tamil is just an inferiority complex.

  177. Dear DBSJ,

Good article to recap the old connections indeed.
You missed some more, V.C. Kuhanathan, Mahendran, SS Chandran to name a few.

To the core of the article:
Anybody having a good heart for the suffering must be praised.
But, did Asin go to Sri Lanka for this? Did she ever plan this? No, never.
She was making up for the circumstantial mistake she made. She was able to go to North because she partied with Rajapaksas. I would not praise her for what she has done. There are more artists in Kodambakkam who can do more than what she is doing. But the ground reality will not allow this. I hope you know what I am talking about.
Even if Asin had this plan in her heart before she left for SL and reveled this to the SL govt. she could have been denied visa.

Please continue your writings which are deep in knowledge that many of us need refreshed. Specially, write about what M.K. can do with the help of the Central government for a solution for the suffering Tamils in SL.

    Best regards,
    Jey

  178. “I have travelled all over India. i do not find any discrimination anywhere.”

You must be blind then. Because I don’t see Tamil on any Indian currency notes, aerogrammes or stamps even though it is an official language of the country. I don’t hear Tamil being spoken on Air India. I do see and hear Hindi though.

  179. Makini alias Kusuma alias Mangalaya, or Amangalya, alias Thenuwara or whoever you are ….I feel sorry for you – you are really pathetic.

I think you are new to TamilWeek, if you are a regular visitor/reader of TW your knowledge would have expanded. Unfortunately you sound like someone who only reads Sinhala Newspapers. Go to dbjs archives and read everthing to enlighten your knowledge.

I feel you have a love for fair skin, and you believe North Indians are Brahmins and Brahmins are fair. Go to Hindu Temples in Sri Lanka and look at those Kevil Iyars, and they are Brahmins and Tamils. See how many of them are fair and you will learn something from that experience.

I am a Hindu, and I am a Tamil,..and I am tall and fair (and I am handsome according to my friends), and you mean to say that all Tamils are dark and short. We Tamils have all shades and colors and shapes and that is our beauty.

You are very unfortunate that you have not seen beautiful Tamil girls in Sri Lanka and in Tamil Nadu. Even North Indians have accepted the fact that Tamil girls are very beautiful. Do you know VP’s daughter is a fair and beautiful girl? (I know your definition of beauty is fair, and my definition is different.) I think you are a fan of Hindi Movies, and there they make it a point to show fair skin and handsome/beautiful artists, but the reality is different.

Just see Sinhala Tele Drama and Tamils Dramas you will see a big difference. In Sinhala Dramas they make it a point to show very handsome guys, whereas in Tamil Teledramas, it is girls/guys next door look is very important.

I think you have to see the world outside, get out of the box… have a life.

Take a 10 Rupee note. then examine it keeping before a lens. If you are not blind you will see the Tamil words in it.

You can send telegrams in Tamil.

I am not a philatelist, but I know many commemorative stamps have been issued in Tamil.

Air India or Indian Air lines is used by people of all languages and countries. In that you have to communicate only in the language which is Universally understood by the passengers.

That is a business and service decision. Don’t bring that into discussion.

    197. Sukhil

    ——

What they are stating is their business. And also many scholars accept that.

Tamil is said to be the Mother of all the South Indian languages. It is ancient.

Just because some pervert doesn’t like that should we give up on our heritage and pride.

Ours is an ancient language. It is rich in literature. Our people are industrious. They have done business overseas from ancient times as evidenced by the various historical chroniclers.

We certainly can rightfully feel proud of our past.

If you don’t like that then we are not bothered.

India could be a good example for the whole world.
The problem lies in the freedom struggle.
In India we got freedom after much of a struggle against the British. It made us all United.
    ———————————————————–

Heaven forbid, if India with its cast, racial and class divisions is considered to be an example for the world, god help us all!

You are under some strong delusions my friend. The freedom struggle did make you all united? What it did was to kill millions and create divisions that are not resolved even today.

I am not trying to put down your country, but you have to face the reality. I have traveled in parts of India, I interact with Indians on a daily basis at work and I know many Indians that I consider good friends. I do admire your accomplishments as a country and I understand what your country has to offer to the rest of the world. But don’t try to portrait it as some utopia, a land of milk and honey where all problems are resolved in three hours by handsome guys and beautiful ladies dancing to a catchy A.R. Rahman tunes.

  184. Sukhil – Am not sure if you can read tamil – May be you have lived in the west for too long 😉

You will find tamil along with ~15 other languages on the currency notes. Announcements in tamil are made by some of the airlines for Chennai sector flights. The poor hostess will spend the whole flying time making only announcements if they are made in all 15 languages. Lets not forget that tamils comprise only 5% of India’s population.

On the contrary, people from other parts of India complain that nobody speaks Hindi in TN.

139 mahesh i wonder whether you are like the character of vikram in anniyan……………..

    ————————————————–

I don’t know whether I am like Vikram in Anniyan.

I do admire the dialogues of late Sujatha.

If you had read his science fiction like Meendum Jeeno, you would see that the dialogues of Ambi are like that robot dog, with the computer logic yes/no. Good/ bad like/dislike etc

The character of Remo i liked for the involvement with which Vikram essayed that character and the character anniyan is superb.

Only sujatha could have penned the dialogues for Ambi. It is sad that we miss the author of the stature of Sujatha.

    So much for Anniyan.

I also was seething with anger when I read the editorial of cho ramasamy.

I also agree that he was naive when it came to the sinhalese leadership and their intentions.

But if this military victory is not turned into a political victory then it will be tragic.

That would be the anti climax because then the world would say that there is no safety for the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

I wish that the Tamils live peacefully with dignity there.

  186. An interesting and timely article.

I have been to SM Nayagam’ son Kumaranayagam’s house in Thimbirigasaya and found several old Sinhala films in their round metal containers. He was sad that no one was interested in them at that time but it would interest the collectors and researchers now. He moved to Tamil Nadu after 83 but may have returned. later.

Apart from producing , tamils also owned Studios and theaters where Sinhala movies were taken/screened. It would be one industry which could help National reconciliation in a big way.

Looking at the snap shot above, The ex tiger brides and grooms look cute and innocent in their bridal dresses. What a waste of life and youth for many others.

    “29. KVS Menon
The Kollywood film industry resents domination by our Mallu beauties. They are jealous about our Asin shining in Bollywood. “..

I don’t think so. In fact the Kollywood is still dominated by Mallu actresses like Nayanthara, Bhavana, Gopika, Meera Jasmine, Navya Nair, Kavya Madhavan and many more apart from Asin. We still remember the yester year heroines like Padmini, KR Vijaya, Sheela, Ambika, Radha, Shobana, Devyani and the like.

Madras considers Malayalan as their little brother and even take the Pariyaru water problem as a minor quarrel within the family. EVeRa Peryar (Nayakkar)was welcomed their when he went to demonstrate against a caste discrimination and not considered an outsider.

But the Sri Lankan Tamils had been betrayed many times by some corrupt Karala borne administrators in South Block and RAW which resulted in leaders like Rajiv & VP Singh making incorrect decisions at improper times. Only PV Narasimma Rao, another South Indian managed to tight rope the situation, but he did not have the clout or majority to do anything meaningful.
By the way, do you know that the Sri Lankan Tamils are closer to Malayalies than their Madras counterparts. The British considered both as Malabhars.

DBSJ please let me know of how to help the tamils in SL. I wish to send a small amount of $300 but could not find a way to do it. I dont want it to go to the hands of any LTTE guy but directly to the needy. Please let me know the way and means.

There was a major fire accident in a school in kumbakonam some 4-5 years back in which more than 50 kids(i dont remember the exact toll) were killed. All the super star actors of Tamilnadu promised 5lacs, 10 lacs etc to the parents of those kids and these goons got very great exposure in Tamil media because of this stunt but no one gave even a penny to them. I was a great admirer of kamal hassan before. I still could remember that he had promised something around 5 or 10 lac but he did not give even a single penny only Vijaykanth gave some 2 lacs. This fact was said by the affected parents. From then on i just started hating kamalhassan. When compared to those f***, asin has done really a wonderful job.

It is for loyal Srilankan Tamils like Shanker to respond. 🙂

It may be true that some Srilankan Tamils were not loyal to Srilanka.

However at this juncture, most of the Srilankan Tamils may believe that India and rest of the world did not support their political demands.

Perhaps Srilankan Tamils are willing to accept any dignified political solution offered by GOSL.

It is wiser for Srilanka to capitalise on this present circumstances.

Delayed solution with external pressure, will only strengthen Pro Eelam Tamils claim that GOSL will not budge without external support.

  195. dear jey,
thanks mahesh for replying i was just referring to remo that his janus face was an example i guess one is you and other one was me lol becoz we seem to be on the same boat i have never come across a person who has identical view lol .as far as ranjans view that india is riven by class, caste, ethnic, religious division i dont dispute it unlike srilanka with its sinhalese leadership hell bent on thrusting down the throat its only sinhala agenda and propagating sinhalese supremacy we dont have a government doing such things.in fact i would blame indian leadership for its meekness which i attribute it to archetype hindu meekness.it was in full exhibitition recently in islamabad where pakistan did not show even a diplomatic decency while the press conference was going.if india had been like srilanka or pakistan eelam would have celebrating its twentieth independence year.srilanka or sinhalese leadership in my view both are one should foster democratic environment where press enjoys freedom it should not stifle opposition these things dont take place in india for your kind information india is marked by free press and its opposition parties enjoy untramelled freedom.unfortunately i would not blame sinhalese rather the solution lies in shedding this paranoid mindset as if 70 million tamils are ready to cross over the palk strait and in a globalised world there will be migration and it is not going to threaten ones culture or identity if that happens may be sinhalese can feel threatened and can erect barricades not now make your mind free please loosen up.

  196. I want to ask the person who comments as Navin whether the Sinhalese are all patriots.

Just last year Sarath Fonseka was hailed as patriot. Now he is called a traitor

This “Navin” who always attacks Tamils & questions their patriotism is an out and out racist

I think Lakshman Kadirgamar a Tamil was the greatest Lankan patriot in recent times. Yet this “Navin” who is not fit to even lick LK’s shoes dares to question Tamil patriotism

    ————————————————————
LK was considered a traitor to the Tamil cause by majority of Tamils. He was also considered an elitist, a Tamil who cannot speak the language & married to a Sinhala women. Nevertheless many Sinhalese would have happily voted him as the Prime Minister of SL if that opportunity arose. Because that was the great regard they had for him. I can very well understand why many Tamils will look at a Srilanka situation on racial lines because that is the way they have been conditioned over 50 years. This is due to mistakes commited by BOTH sinhalese and Tamil leaderships. But all Tamils who have had the opportunity to mix with sinhalese are good as gold & hold liberal views.

  200. 217. Deshapremi:

No thanks. You can lick the shoes of LK and SF as much as you like. I shall stay away.

I’m quite sure LK will be disgusted with you licking his shoes but I’m not so sure about SF however with his over sized ego as of late.

  201. 216. jaggan sriram

I also find that our views are identical. I also do believe that Sinhalese polity and sri lankan govt are one.

Their paranoid about the Tamils from the main land crossing over is the root cause of the problem.

Yes, if India had been like Sri Lanka or Pakistan things would have been different.

Or for that matter if India were like the China, things would have been far far different. It would be claiming the entire island as part of it and would be citing so many historical connections between India and Sri Lanka.

In our flag we would have got one star as there are in the flag of China.

One thing you may have noticed.

The neighbours of our country feel threatened merely by our size.

Pakistan is paranoid about India. Sri Lanka is paranoid about India.

China for that matter is rumored to be having plans to break up India into pieces.

We are very peace loving and we do not disturb our neighbours yet people are paranoid about us for our size.

    We can’t help it.

    1. A very nice essay. You narrated not only some part of cinema-history but also the contemporary politics behind it. I wish someone translates this and publish it in any Tamil Newspaper or magazine in TN for the general readers. Past history of good old days! Very interesting. But the latest politics by Seeman is different altogether.
    2. What I understood is, cine world both Tamil & Hindi are always inclusive. The average cinema goers also do not bother much about the background of anybody’s religion, caste and nationality so longer they are entertained. People would go behind a Maharashtra born Shivaji Rao RajaniKanth or a Muslim girl from North Khusboo or Telugu speaking ‘Silk’ Smitha without any bias or ill feeling or identity politics. The same thing happened in Hindi field too where there were/are many actors who are Muslims and those who have origins from South India. In fact, the cinema goers are also equally egalitarian! More than 99%! (Don’t you see the moral? The Good attracts the Good! When you are inclusive, you will get people with inclusive mind!! )
    3. If ‘inclusiveness’ is the soul of Cine world, then where is the problem? It is partly with the apple and partly with both Adam and Eve. The ‘apple’ is the ‘issue or cause’ ; Adam and Eve are politicians and cine-world (gender is interchangeable). The issue/cause varies from time to time – it can be either Copyrights for DVD or Cauvery Water from Karnataka or Khusboo’s views on pre-marital sex or SL Tamil issue or anything else.
    4. The relationship between Cine world and Politicians is opportunistic. Some actors will elope with the politicians/politics for their own future career plans. Someone will maintain need-based relationships; the needs will vary from time to time, from petty concessions to a bail out of their messy finances. The silent majority generally maintains a safe distance from all politicians and their lackeys in cine field; this silent majority is the one who are dragged by the dictum of those who can make noises at highest decibels.
    5. Again, the different issues were faced by the cine world differently. If the issue is the copy right of DVDs, there is a collective representation to Govt led by Producers; If it is ‘fatwa’ against Khusboo’s view on pre marital sex, she had to fight it out independently! One may or may not accept her views. You can simply ignore what she said was rubbish. But mountain was made out of molehill. The entire film community kept mum except, I think, Suhasini was the one who supported her and faced the wrath. When somebody had to face the court cases all across TN, where would she go? Obviously, to Politicians, – whoever it is. Presently, she is with DMK.
    6. In case of Cauvery Water, it was the politicians who used the cine world in order to create the public opinion that they are ‘on the job’ and ‘working hard’ to solve the problem. They needed some attractive crowd for slogan shouting and theatrics. The cine world was so naïve that they went on ‘strike’ without understanding the root of the issue. Rajanikanth announced he would give Rs one crore for linking Ganga-Cauvery.
Has anyone questioned the wisdom or stupidity of linking rivers across India? Have they seen any project report? Feasibility study? Do they know anything about the environmental havoc this Rivers-linking project will create? Just because the poet, Subramania Bharathy said, we cannot go with shovel and basket to dig sand and link the river. The great poet said many good things. Are we following all?
Alright, so, it is also not a case of “admant Kannadigas” VS “Always victimsed Tamils” – problem. Water does not belong to Karnataka or Kerala or Tamil Nadu. Not even to India. It belongs to the Nature. Man, being part of Nature, has to find ways to use it with birds, animals and plants so that all exist and continue to exist! In management jargon, it is a “resource allocation” problem. How do we share the scarce resource? Who will get what? Who means, it is not Karnataka or TN – alone, it is with fellow living beings too. Man is not the sole proprietor of this world! In fact, we need to ask a fundamental questions. Is water really scarce? Are we using more than ‘our’ requirements? Are we not simplifying it as US vs THEM? What is now scarce is not ‘resources’ – it is the abundance of mind! The awareness of the need to co-exist is in short supply!
An ordinary sane man’s expectation is that Cine field, being a group of artists, poets, authors and writers – should rise above the problem – see it in a different perspective and open a dialogue – talk to those who are not talking – you may not have any perfect solution-there is no perfect solution in this world – we have only possibilities- explore them by asking right questions at the right time.
But, alas, the ruling deity of the Cine world is not Goddess Saraswathy (God of wisdom, knowledge and Art). It is Laxmi (God of wealth, money, possessions). “Kasey than Kadavulada” .
Burdened with their own mediocrity, they succumbed to the tune of obscene music from politicians; performed some drama and disbursed. Cinema shooting was over! Pack-up! Pack-up! Politicians, Administrators and Courts too deferred the problem conveniently. There were some rains in the Delta for the next few years. Farmers did not make much fuss. Nobody remembered it. But there is no water in Cauvery. The cinema continues. OK guys, Next scene!
7 Let us come to Sri Lankan Tamil issue. Let me not go into the past history. (Everyone knows history as seen thro’ their respective colored broken glasses!). What I say is subjective and seen thro’ my own glasses. It is also broken and not clear, hence I am also struggling find what is ahead!
When VP’s dead photo was shown in TV, I was in Chennai. The first response from me/family/ public was ‘disbelief’. There were confusing messages. There was also news that VP was alive. No authentic news. When everyone came to know, all was over, it was not for VP’s death – the general public lost interest in him for various reasons – In the North where I lived for some time, VP was a joke!- If I took a tough stand on an issue in my office, the reply from my friendly colleagues would be “Hey, Don’t behave like your close ‘friend’ Prabhakaran! Be flexible!”).
In my opinion, the real concern was, for the death of so many people, 1000s – 10000s -no idea – all conflicting information, but the number was more, for sure – that was the shock! The general public in TN was not regretting for VP, it was for the common men and women who died with him. Silent mourning! A feeling that we did not do anything at the right time to prevent the deaths of so many people, whatever wrong they did. There was silent inexplicable sorrow .Pain. A sense of impotence. The public knew that LTTE was using the people as human shield. Whoever I talked at that time, the first staring subject was the death of so many people; this “so many’ – the vagueness was the issue! It was a cloudy feeling. One demon was killed by another demon. The victorious demon is not seen to be doing anything for those who are left and living. That was the feeling. How do we engage this dancing demon?
Probably, the cine world, like all the other public in TN, might have been affected by this feeling. It made them immobile and somehow the feeling should be expressed –so it accepted the call for boycott. Seeman might have kidnapped their feelings and used them for his own design. It was simply TINA factor – There Is No Alternative- idea coming from anyone. This is what I get from my friends who have friends/relatives working in the field. Some insiders may express it better.
I am sure that the cloudy guilty feeling will clear out soon. The non-political, highly-inclusive and independent silent majority in the cine field will rise to the occasion and reach out soon. It is just a matter of time. Individuals may move faster. Communities and groups do take some time. I am also sure, the inclusive cinema (both Tamil/Hindi), will reach out not only to Tamil but also to the equally bleeding Sinhalese and Muslims too.
When I was recently in Srilanka for a short period, I happened to get down in a small remote village in the predominantly Sinhalese area. It was a small shop. The shop keeper was a lady in her 50’s. There was a young lady in her 20’s and a girl in her teen with a notebook writing something in Sinhala. There were only three women in the shop cum small house. They did not understand Tamil. With some English words and sign language, we bought some bananas and biscuits. All water bottles were already already sold out. I wanted some water. The young girl went inside to bring water. I was standing at the entrance to their living portion. I could see the entire house including kitchen. There was no sign of any male living in the house – being male, I could approximately get a guess, – I wish my guess is wrong. Even on the road, I could see more women and children. I am not sure of the sex-ratio in Sinhalese area, whether it is like Kerala where females are more than men.
What I am trying to say is that the Sinhalese are also bleeding equally in this brutal war. The human casualties seem to be very high. (What about cows, goats and peacocks? Any one cares in the Buddha land?) I doubt whether any government will ever come out with truth. But communities will feel and face the harsh truth.
The percentage of people who suffer in the respective communities may be high or low. The numbers are cold statistic. It will not convey the feelings. But the sufferer, irrespective of whether he/she is Tamil, Sinhalese, Muslim or Burgar knows the pain and it is the same to all.
What is needed now is healing. The earlier the people reach out to those who suffer, it is better for all the communities. So, it is not only responsibility of the Tamil/Hindi film world, it is also the responsibility of the Sinhalese/Tamil communities– whether Diaspora or living in SL – to reach out to all crossing boundaries of race and religion
I do not accept that Tamil actors or Diaspora going to Tamils only – Sinhalese Diaspora and the Sinhalese public reaching to Sinhalese only – Muslims to Muslims only. This will again create polarization and ill-feeling. When there is wound and is yet to heal, infection will spread fast for no reason! It will delay the healing! Those who spread infection with venomous ideas should be segregated whether in TN or in Diaspora or among Sinhalese.
Lastly, I saw a photo of an old Sinhalese lady standing before a Buldozer-cum tank where her son in the army got killed. A heart rending scene really. The report said that she had come all the way from South to see that place for the first time. I am not sure whether this lady or any common unknown Sinhalese family when they were visiting the places in North or to see the places where their relatives got killed – ever visited the IDP camps/hospitals where the young girls and boys- militants or not- who lost their limbs lying left to their own fate or consoled a mother who lost all her relatives. Bonding and trust between common Tamil and the common Sinhalese must happen. Both must feel that they are not animals meant for killing each other.
In the same way, I read that KP was remorse and consoling the wounded boys of the camp. Fine! Not enough. Has he ever visited any of the army camps where the wounded army men are recovering, shed tears and said ‘sorry’? Is any of your Tamil Parliamentarians gone to any of the common Sinhalese or Muslims who had died in many of suicidal attacks of the madman?
I will ask the same question to Sinhalese Parliamentarians- how many of them gone to the houses of the common man – Tamil or Muslim who got killed? I wish any of the Sinhalese Parliamentarians go on fast unto death unless and until all the Tamil boys and girls who are detained in camps are released! There are no barbarians at the gate. The barbarians are in our mind.
What is reconciliation? Is it making one man to kiss the sand and say ‘sorry’? Not enough- even if that happens.
It is not enough the beauty queens and kings from cine world here visiting SL and cheering up all. The real beauties are the unknown common Srilankans whether Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim or Burger. Create an environment of peaceful co-existence with mutual accommodation. People themselves will cheer up on their own!

    Very thoughtful indeed.
Thank you for visiting Sri Lanka and seeing for yourself – however short the visit was. Thank you for writing what you felt in your heart.

  205. 224 Ravee Gee,

Your thoughts are good. Coming from a person in TN,presumably of Tamil origin make them even better.

Sinhalese are generally hospitable people. They are not racists.

There were times when a few poor Sinhalese were agitated by opportunistic politicians and lead them to destroy the lives and properties of innocent Tamil civilians.

The last such incident was nearly three decades ago.

Since then the Sinhalese have demonstrated a remarkable resilience and restraint despite the vicious provocations.

That shows the maturity the Sinhalese have achieved during the thirty year insurgency.

Most Sinhalese are simple people similar to most natives in the Pacific Islands and even Malaysia.

They have no great ambitions. They want to live peacefully with whatever they have.

Buddhist philosophy probably moulded these characters into the Sinhalese.

The hordes of Sinhalese who are flocking to Nagadeepa, Nallor and other such place of worship are an indication of their devoted, though fun loving adventurous and free spending nature.

Have you seen Tamils frequenting Sinhala places of worship like the Dalad Maligawa , Anuradapura ect.?

One the other hand the Tamil politicians, and even well off Tamil civilians who have lived all their lives in comfortable surroundnigs ,among the Sinhalese openly come out with anti Sinhala and ant Buddhist statements as you must have seen even in these columns.

These statements have become more frequent with the demise of the LTTE.

I think the ball is in their court to now if they want to to play positively.

It involves taking stock of the current ground realities and adopt positive progressive and pragmatic steps to achieve their goals.

The last two writings of Mr Jeyaraj are exemplery in that respect .

Although the two subjects of the articles are poles apart , (one an “angel “and the other an ex Terrorist leader) their common goal is the welfare and well being of the hundreds of thousands of victims of this senseless and brutal insurgency.

What better example can be more convincing for the undecided ,but caring Tamil members of the diaspora to get in to action.

You have beautifully weaved the Statistics to project that Sinhalese are no sinners than the Indians. Don’t think people would pull wool over their eyes and listen to you.

Every country or region in this world has a certain amount of bias, both for and against. It is pertinent to talk about the scale, the destruction and horrors created by such bias. SL with country size of 20million people has created massive horrors to the minority Tamil population. Given the fact that around 3 million Tamils would be in the island of which nearly 10% of them were behind the barbed wire for nearly a year; this illustrates vividly that SL Govt is run by Scoundrels, Racists and chauvinists. Where in India did you find such a sizable section of the population was encircled in open jails. Where did you find close to 1% of the ethnic population being killed by racists mongrels other than Srilanka in a short span of time (Vanni Mayhem in 2009). Do you think by throwing some statistics you can hoodwink everyone in the world?

India’s population is 1billion; almost all the current religions in this world are being followed and close to 1600 languages being spoken across India. ethnic discontent is not as volatile as your guys in SL create. Given such facts India is a wonderful country in this world.

  209. #Ravi GEE

I read your article in Transcurrents. Please get some facts to your head and rewind your visit to SL.

SL has near 100% literacy for many years. Today after 30 years of Civil war their Per capita income is TWICE that of India’s Per Capita income.

Then do some maths. What it would have been some decades earlier. Richer country necessarily would look clean and beautiful.

    …..

About the reason for the anger against SL Racist Govt … once again clean up your head and read my last comment. Bloody, it is the scale that we are talking about proportion to the Tamil population size.

Asin has done a great job and a very necessary one and let us salute her. But plenty remains to be done. We need to pull 100s of Asin like people to heal the wounds. Also we’ll push ourselves to help the needy people among Sinhalaese.

The anger and immediate needs are different. Let us thank Asin but keep afloat rabble rousers in the fringe just to ensure no more Vanni by the Govt run by Scoundrels in SL

  210. 229 sjoseph,

“They” refers to the ones who are hellbent on keeping the North Eastern people destitute by preventing them from joining the mainstream and enjoying the benefits of the new development phase.

Thererfore “they” are a multitude of Nationalities including some Sinhalese, if you care to study the current multi fronted assault being waged against Srilanka.

  211. #233-Gbsganesan

SL has near 100% literacy for many years. Today after 30 years of Civil war their Per capita income is TWICE that of India’s Per Capita income
    ———————————————————-

A small correction here, though it is not very important in the larger scheme of things, just to set the record straight.

Srilanka’s per capita income is USD 4500 while India’s is $3100 on a Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) basis. I think you might have taken the nominal value basis instead of PPP.

The PPP is a better measure because it takes into consideration what the US dollar is worth in both countries. If you come with 100 USD to both countries you will fiind that in India you can buy more with that than in Srilanka. India has kept its prices low with clever control of inflation than srilanka which has allowed inflation to go to even double digit levels on several occasions.

So actually Srilanka’s per capita income is about 50 per cent more than India’s.

You also have to be a bit cautious when looking at per capita income because it does not reflect the distribution of incom among the popuation. It just divides the total gross domestic product by the number of people. The GINI index is n indication of the distribution of the income. Srilanka is very skewed in this regard and is like a latin american country with very unequal distribution of income. India is better in this regard.

To win elections therefore in srilanka it is better to campaign on distribution of income than to talk about making the cake bigger. The SLFP’s strong point has been in this regard while the UNP talks of opening up the economy to make it bigger. People resent the distribution of the income more than the fact that the economy is small. Therefore the message of the SLFP resonates better with the masses, as long as they don’t get someone like Sirimavo, who was utterly insensitive to the people’s suffering while distributing the income better than the UNP.

  212. 230. jagan sriram

How is it jagan that I and you are both writing about murali at the same time and also referring to him as mappillai.

    It is nostalgic.

  213. 230 Mahesh and 230 Jagan Sirram

Your kind sentiments about Murali, who will be in all Sri Lanka’s hearts for many many years to come.

Have you guys ever for once stopped and thought a bit about why his family went to India/Tamil Nadu to find a bride for him? There are many wealthy, educated Tamil beauties in Jaffna and Colombo, but he family went to Chennai.

By the way, absolutely nothing against his wife who I think is cute as a button.

  214. 232. Gbsganesan

First of all, I did not quote any statistics. I will give you some numbers now.

You talk about the scale of destruction. Agreed, it was massive. But think back to the scale of problem. One-third of the country was in total control of a terrorist organization. 1/2 of the coast line was in total control of that organization. Bombs were being set of in all parts of the country with impunity. Government officials were being assassinated all over the place. The first steps of a rebel air force was taking place. As we found out later, submarines were been manufactured, which if were to be operational, would have blockaded the ports of Colombo, Galle and Trinco.

Now think what would be the response of the Indian government (or any other government for that matter) if faced with such a situation. You talk about the number of Tamils behind barbed wire. Have you thought about what is going on in Kashmir? Those people may not be behind barbed wire literally but do you think that they have freedom to do what they want and go about freely?

India’s problems in NE Tribal areas are just starting. In the initial stages of LTTE in the 80’s, NE and Jaffna were not under barbed wire also. But if one were to analyze, the activities of Maoist rebels are taking a path that is eerily similar to what LTTE and other militants did in Sri Lanka in the early stages. They are attacking the mostly ineffective police and collecting arms. Wait and see, the government response will be to create armed villages, fortified and defended and the village tribal populations under iron fisted government control. That will make is very easy for the rebels to recruit people. Then you will see the response of the rebels, suicide bombers and IEDs. LTTE demonstrated to the whole world how to conduct asymmetric warfare against a government force and various rebel groups through out the world have learnt from the masters well. By the time the Indian government wises up and start addressing the root cause of the problem, just like it happened in Sri Lanka, it will be too late.

Marriages are personal things. Why are you mixing it up.

Rajiv married an Italian. Rahul is said to be dating a columbian.

I don’t understand the drift in your words.

Of course I would say that many Jaffna beauties are there. One was of course, you would fume with anger, Duwaraka, the daughter of VP.

Also there are many sinhalese lasses, I would like to love.

One face is tormenting me. Right now I am not able to recollect the name.

Of course beauties are there among the Tamils and also among the Sinhalese.

  216. #235 Shankar

Thanks Shankar for the value added information.

India also suffers from the distribution bias but I am extremely surprised as it has an impact in SL politics. We are miles away from such a pointed thinking.

In Southern India, Kerala is maturing fast as it has grown well in the last couple of decades aided by concentrated population that helps in passing the cake quicker among the population. But your model is too good because it has happened despite the Civil war for decades. Hats off to you guys!

    Some possible answers are:

Could be Murali feels at home in Chennai.
Could be Uphill country Tamils are loya to India.
They are aware India is willing to accept them, if Srilanka throws them out by a legislation.

  218. What Tamil Nadu politician like Seeman is doing is not to provoke the SL tamils to continue with the secessionism but instead an effort to force SL government to bring out reasonable political solution.

  219. Congratulation, once again very best article- one which drew attention to the plight of victims of war of SL. I like the comments that you made to Comments #23 and #89.

I was bit puzzled to see his describing of “There will be many bright sparks coming out of these 160 children”. Kids are kids why such a separation in this early stage, the thing is, separation appears to be in his blood. If all sparked, there will not be many to fight for his fantasy land.

For those 400 odd people, whose eyes operated, no doubt Asin is an angel, regardless of what war mongers have been saying here. If five medical doctors brought down from India can do this, how many doctors, we, Tamil Diaspora have? I think an honest patriotic Tamil doctor who did read this article asking himself/herself should not I be there. I have seen overseas (o/s) doctors flocking to SL aftermath of Tsunami to help affected Tamils. Many people thought these o/s doctors were very mindful of the fact that they, majority of them, had used SL resources to earn their degrees, use the opportunity presented then, to give a little bit back to the community, it deserves. Indeed, it was great and most sensible thing to do. We all know part of the doctor shortage problem in SL, North in particular, was a result of brains drain created by doctors going overseas looking for greener pasters, although they give numerous reasons that are far from truth. Also acknowledge a few left the country have had very compelling reasons, some had narrow misses and very bad experience in the 1983 riots.

What was disappointing is the response of these same o/s doctors, who made mission to care for tsunami victims, with regard to the latest crisis brought by the war. Only thing which was noticed during the difficult days of war was, there were few news items in their mouth pieces that “overseas doctors were seeking permission of GoSL through the UN to visit SL” but what happened thereafter was any one’s guess. Why is this indifference? If these groups were genuine and feeling for the well-being of their own folks, they should have approached the Sri Lankan embassy in their respective country and sought permission for, required only if they were concerned about their own safety and security. If suppose, permission was not given, there should have been some sort of protest in front of the embassy, it should have gained much needed credibility from the IC, instead of shouting at streets with the slogan to save the leader.

The fact of the matter was these o/s doctors were expecting a invite from LTTE and it was not, in hind sight, it is now abundantly obvious that they were not concerned about patients nor did feel obliged to live up to the profession ethics but what they were working on was to earn the “Mahamanithar” award from the leader, may be individually. It came clear now that the publicity was the sole reason of these intellectuals’ mission to SL post tsunami. Probably this kind of attitude was the main reason that the whole struggle was derailed, amid there were few opportunities, failed to materialise. Everyone including these o/s doctors want to be seen as a LTTE front liner, waiting for instruction from Kilinochi, no one wanted to question a thing even what LTTE was doing blatantly wrong or not practical. One thing they knew for sure was wether LTTE wins or looses; they would not worse off as they are in foreign soil. Once again resurrecting this group does not serve any purpose except making the statistics to look much impressive, to gain sympathy. These mad men’s actions, living in foreign countries, will only make lives of those people, who live back at home, miserable.

Had these overseas doctors volunteered like they did for tsunami, not only the victims of the war should have given better care but also some more lives could have saved.

Under this circumstance, those affected therefore had to be inevitably relied on others mercy, if they need to be cured, alas they did not need to get Diaspora’s approval for this. These five doctors who came courtesy of Asin were not the first group of doctors from India that visited to the island for treating these victims of war. Foreign (eg-French) doctors treating in N-E hospitals are not something new and have been happening for decades. We do not know names of the doctors Asin brought, but they are the real heroes for these otherwise blind people. Talking about heroes, what sprints to my mind is those three or four doctors that stayed with the people inside the NFZ up to the last minutes. We should all sincerely thank these doctors.

As for Asin’s help, I do not think she expects any dividends from the war mongers but she gets blessings and full support of all people who genuinely love peace for this country.

    Dear Sir.Aiya

From your name, I assume you are an elderly senior citizen from SL living somewhere in the world. I am from Tamil Nadu living somewhere in India.

Kindly do not mistake me that I am interfering in your communication. I understand in this blog-world there is abundant freedom (and space) available to express our feelings – within boundaries of parliamentary language I am a new comer to this blog though I have been visiting here for the past few months. One of the fundamental unwritten rules I framed for myself when I started to post my comments was NOT to have unnecessary criss-crossing mails addressing to each other – unless it is of clarificatory in nature. I am aware this is a public forum of DBSJ and not mine. (This is my style. Others do have a right to differ)

However, I felt there is a need to communicate to you directly thro’ this blog for the following reasons (A) I observed -you intend to listen (B) There is an urgent medical need in SL that is not going to them in time despite so many competent hands available in the diaspora.(C) I have been observing such ranting and wailing communications in this blog earlier. Pls excuse me for my insensitive language, if you think so.

I have been observing the SL issue for quite some time- roughly 2 decades. It is only a news for me. But for you all, it is pain, history lived thro’ freightening moments and losses. So, I empathize with you. With this empathy, if I point out an error in your communication, would you refuse to accept?
It may appear to you, I am behaving like a child. Sometimes, children are needed to make you laugh, as it may open some of the closed doors in the minds of elders!

So, with your permission, let me modify your posting # 243 like this:

    QUOTE:

    From : Aiya
To : All Sinhalese/Tamil Doctors in the Diaspora of Srilankan community!

    1. You all aware that there is a tremendous shortage of medical personnel in entire SL .

    2. The people in SL still recall the exemplary service many of you, Doctors in the Diaspora rendered at the time of Tsunami.

    3. What the country now faces is Tsunami of different type! It gives us a great opportunity to correct our mistakes and bring healing to the wounded body and minds. Indian Doctors under the charity mission of actor Asin are doing exemplary service. The Doctors in the Diaspora who are equally competent can do similar service in SL.

    4. I can understand many of you Doctors do have personal priorities. However, this is the right time to leave our differences and help ALL our own kith and kin in SL. You may spare a fortnight or month or a year in SL. Instead of all of you going at a time, your service visit to SL can be staggered in such a manner that all do get an opportunity to serve the people.

    5. The logistics like visa formalities, your family’s stay can be discussed as this cannot be a great hindrance if we intend to serve our people

    UNQUOTE

    Dear Sir, Aiya

I hope you would have seen the difference in communication. You can never change people with extreme views. If so, your VP would have changed long time ago! There are many fence sitters who are really conscientious but circumstances might have forced them to stay with extremists. Address them without any bias whether he is Tamil or Sinhalese with a focus to serve both the communities. Extremists will automatically get eliminated.I find both the communities are equally damaged and you also agree with me.

Please stop ranting, wailing and weeping. I am sorry for the rough language. You see, children do not know any diplomacy. I am a child refusing to grow up!

    Ravi Gee
P,S – If you think, I crossed my limits, please excuse me. I will request DBSJ to delete my comment, if you/he so desires.

  221. I think, actually, this would have happened behind the scene:

Shiranthi might have asked Asin to accompany with her. For her it was an image building exercise. At the same time, it was a great chance for Mahinda. He used Asin to make the oppositions of pro-LTTE politicians in Tamil Nadu to zero-effect. Asin might have paid for this. Look at her face. Someone directed her. She did not do anything her own. Shiranthi may want popularity to enter the politics (or Mahinda & Bros).

All these are pure politics. Tamils are intelligent. They know what is going on behind these dramas.

  222. “Tamils are intelligent”

Is that why they supported Prabhakaran and his pipe dream that left so many people dead?

    “Tamils are intelligent”

    ——————————————————
1.How many votes did Prabhaharan get from the tamils?

    2. What took the GOSL so long to finish him off? 25 years infact. Was it the businessses run by Army top brass and commisions earned from military purchases. If no prabha , then no side businesses and no commissions no?

So before talking of tamils supporting Prabha answer those 2 questions. Now no prabha and so no tamils to support him no? What the rajapakshes did, why did JR, Premedasa, Chandrika not do?

So the question is who really supported prabha. Sinhalese or tamils?

  224. Response #244

    Ravi-Gee

Thanks for your advice, which was given under above comment, and am happy to note that I have induced a person in your calibre to contribute first time to this forum.

Acknowledge you categorising my writing as ranting, raving and wailing communications, however I have not offended, as I have my own reasons for writing the way I did. I was not writing to all Medical doctors of Tamil, Sinhala Diaspora, but for a target group highlighting their failure to help the very people they claimed their association formed to help for, at a time of the need. For this kind of people (LTTE supporters but claimed that they help only for Tamils back home affected by the war) whose tacit actions led our people to destruction and misery, one has to use a language that they deserve and can understand. The point I wanted to drive home was, this group of professionals, and I too hold their profession up high because they save lives, alleviate pain, ache, etc. have articulated people to contribute fund to its association, should not think that people do not take notice of what they have or have not done when it comes to caring for the IDP. Having said, I realised now, I was a bit got carried away after reading the comment made by a doctor. His comment for me akin one of the proverbs in Tamil goes like….”a dog guarding hay does not either eats by itself or allows the other”.

As you rightly pointed out, for us it is pain, not news with due respect for you – having met some of these victims and seen their plight first hand, it is only spontaneous that passion and emotion at times take over the courtesy and norm that should have otherwise been observed when discussing touchy issues that are so closest to you.

Hope you are reasonably happy with my reasoning and would see some very polite and civilised comments in future for issues of common interest. End

  226. Sir,you are absoutely correct.Though Im a Sri Lankan Sinhalese,I dont care about the races in my interest to the cinema, because I like to watch tamil movies too.So why those people in Tamil Nadu who are protesting cant think that we too like to meet or see their Kollywood actors and actresses? Some people dont know that we born to the world in same way and the apperance of all humans in the world is the same. After birth, the society like to name the new born one as Tamil,Hindu,Muslim or Sinhala according to the family background.Other than we all are same human beings which made frome flesh and blood.Think for a moment if there is a nice song in the tamil movi or hindhi movie with anice melody,we all like to listen for that without considering any problems in races. So why we hide our true natural qualities in our human body? Some shows false appearence and try to divide the world in to various categories and making ueseless conflicts between the people, because they dont think that they born and die in same manner.I will tell you some thing,if you are born to the Tamil parents in this birth and what happended if you born to a Sinhala parents in your next birth? So can you protesting against the useless concept of ethnicity?I think ethnicity is only usefultocensus, but it would not be a cause to make dangerous conflict between the same humanbeings in the world. If you see there are many conflicts between the Hindu people and Muslim people, but the biggest star in the North India is the Shrukh Khan.So why they are not labelling him as a non-Hindu,because they love his acting without considering his race or religion. So asSinhala one I too like the acting of Surya,Asin and Jeyam Ravi than the Hindi film stars, without considering any problems in races. So why we only feel like this, because it is useless to fight for the false, foolish and useless differnces made by the society among the same type of human beings on the Earth. The nature give the good lesson for the people on the Earth by making various catastrophes, because we all know the people in various races will die from a natrual disasters on the same place. So why the nature doesnt consider the races when they make disasters. This is the reality which most of the people dont believe on this Earth.
Some people have big power to attract the other people, such as the famous terrorists in the world. So they use their power to induce other to make unnessary conflicts among them.So the foolish people who are induced to make conflicts will help those type people to fullfill their targets or the dreams. But why people cant understand those type people have inner secrects inside.because they like get the power and have a ego to outshine them selves as the most famous leaders in the world.Think about the most of the politicians, they spent their money and time during the elections to win because they like to get power,But we all know after winning he treat his people greatly but not considering the other people. So cant they use their special power of talent to make the world nice without making useless ethnic conflicts?
Jeyaraj sir,Im only twenty two year girl but have a plan to do my masters in India and like to learn Indian music after my degree because I like so much to sing Indian songs, but unfortunaley we will be the victims under theunnessary ethnic crisis,so we have to fight for fullfilling our dreams. But sometimes I think why this world is so cruel, may this is a foolish wish, but I like to wish the end of the world in future by the nature and begin new human beings who dosent have any knowledge to make racism any more further. Then the world will be nice and new gneration of human beings can live happily and peacefully with others on the Earth and full fill their nice targets without any hindrance and can die happily. That is what I want.Best of of luck you sir in all what you do.Because you are a good human on this Earth.
