Veteran Tamil Politician Veerasingham Anandasangaree reaches the age of eighty today (June 15th).
Sangaree as he is generally known was born on June 15th 1933 in Point Pedro. Though not in Parliament now, the octogenarian is yet active in politics and functions as the Secretary-General of the Tamil United Liberation Front(TULF).Earlier he was the TULF president.

As for your continuing to visit this site I may not know whether you are doing so individually but I do know that collectively the visitors and readers have almost doubled after I stopped Transcurrents and disabled comments.
I have a sitemeter which monitors visits and page views on a daily,weekly and monthly basis. The comments were/are only a very,very tiny fraction of the number of readers. I know that comments for my blog usually were in three digits but they were no indicator of the total number of readers who are usually in the 4-5-6 digit range daily,weekly and monthly
The comments were supposed to be a garland but turned into a millstone around the neck. So it had to go.
By the way no one was silenced. My e-mail is given after articles for responses. I must say I receive a very large number of mails daily that reflect the mindset of readers clearly. These are honest and sincere unlike many of the comments written by people under bogus names. I do try and reply to all but invariably some get left out. I am so sorry.
Still waiting on the definitive book of Sri Lanka, 1948-2013. May this be the year and may it come from your pen.
Even now so many readers have sent me new year greetings and wishes on e-mail rather than post here though I have opened it up for Comments
Sadly some others are posting political and personal comments here instead of using it to exchange sentiments for 2013 as I had hoped. I have deleted more than a 100 such “comments” so far.THis strenghens my resolve not to have the comments section permanently
As for the definitive book, you pay me too much of a compliment. As you can see a very large number of Ladies and Gentlemen -mostly non- Sri Lankan – are turning out all sorts of books on Lanka.
In this environment I want to be “far from the madding crowd” and simply engage in plain journalism
So thank you once again and may the spirit of Quasimodo ensure that the Bells of Notre Dame keep ringing loudly and clearly

Only the comments section has been disabled. The content and input of the site continues as usual.The readers have almost doubled according to my sitemeter statistics in the months after I closed down Transcurrents and stopped comments.
The comments section was opened with the expectation that people would have an amiable,illuminating conversation among themselves and with me.
Sadly that did not happen in the way I expected.
Except for a handful the comments were useless,irritating and always critical with little basis
The comments amounting to a negligible quantity do not reflect either the numbers or opinion of the vast.”silent”majority of our readers
The comments were mostly written by a small group of people using false names .Very often they were trolls.
Although you say thousands of readers miss the comments the e-mails I have received in hundreds recently are thankful that I stopped the comments section.
I too am happy and relieved.
Even now I just opened up this post for comments to share greetings and wishes for 2013. But I have had to delete 156 comments so far that simply attacked people personally and politically.My action in opening up for comments was totally misused and abused by these people besides giving me unnecessary work and grief for the new year
If people cannot even use a forum to exchange greetings what is the use of having a comments section?
I am only passing comments that stick to the basis on which comments were opened up for the new year for about two weeks
After that I will close it up for comments
Thank you for ackowledging that I pioneered the concept and model of websites that are being copycatted by others.
Perhaps those who want to “comment”can visit these sites and do so

I have no doubt your readership remains or has increased although you did away with the Readers’ comments section.
I for one refer to the blog regularly and have seen many that can fall into the Breaking-news category. But if you will allow me, Readers’ comments section was the magnet that drew many to your pages. I agree most were irrelevant
and inane comments. But the baby should not be thrown out with the bath water. I will be one of the many thousands
to see the re-emergence of the popular comments section. But this is entirely dependent on the necessary compulsions and convenience at your side.

I miss the comments section. I wish that all site users, particularly the commentators, were decent enough and disciplined so that there is no need for moderation. Commenting and sharing views and healthy discussions are very useful and important purpose for many readers that are no longer frequenting the site. I do understand the problems and burden on you DBSJ with comments. However, it is our belief that site is not better off without comments according to the opinions of many of us.
