In a disturbing turn of events, retired four star General Sarath Fonseka was taken into custody by a contingent of military police on the night of Monday, February 8th 2010.

General Sarath Fonseka

General Fonseka a widely regarded as the most successful army commander in post-Independence Sri Lanka was roughly manhandled, assaulted and forcibly dragged away by military personnel who had saluted him with respect only a few months ago.

The ex-army chief who was the main challenger of President Mahinda Rajapakse in the recently concluded Presidential poll is currently “housed” at a chalet within the Naval headquarters precincts in Colombo.

Gen. Fonseka who also held the position of Chief of Defence staff (CDS) prior to contesting the Presidential elections is detained pending interrogation into alleged military offences committed by him while in service as Army chief and chief of defence staff.

Although a charge sheet is yet to be formulated the General is very likely to face in camera court-martial proceedings at the hands of a military tribunal that would debar media coverage.

The manner and mode in which the highly decorated war hero was arrested and detained has come in for heavy criticism by opposition politicians on whom the cruel irony of the man who defeated “terrorism” being treated like a terrorist was not lost.

Discussions

General Fonseka was in his political office at Rajakeeya Mawatte (Reid avenue) near Royal College in Colombo 7 discussing political strategies and campaign tactics for the forthcoming Parliamentary polls with a group of political allies.

Among those participating in the discussions were Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC)leader and MP Rauff Hakeem, Democratic Peoples Front (DPF)leader and MP Mano Ganesan, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Somawansa Amerasinghe and JVP Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti.

Fonseka’s media secretary Senaka de Silva a.k.a “Shah” Silva was also a participant. Senaka Silva is a former captain of the Sri Lankan Army.

The highly confidential discussions were conducted behind closed doors in Gen. Fonseka’s boardroom on the first floor of the building.

The security personnel in charge of personal security for the General and other political leaders like Hakeem, Ganesan and Handunnetty were waiting in an outer enclosure.

The time was about 9.40 pm when a contingent of military personnel swooped down on the premises in a commando type raid. While scores of soldiers took up positions around and inside the building a special squad burst into the room where the meeting was going on.

Before entering the room by breaking down the door the military personnel had disarmed the security officers of Fonseka and other political leaders by relieving them of their firearms.

Upon entering the room the Military Police, Provost-Marshal Brigadier Wijesiri had introduced himself and asked the politicial leaders to leave the room as the Army had been instructed to detain and question General Fonseka.

The political leaders had objected to this high-handed action and politely refused to vacate the room and leave the General to the tender mercies of his erstwhile military subordinates.

At this point General Fonseka had said that if he was to be arrested for questioning then it had to be done in the proper way. He said that the army could not arrest him as he was no longer in the army and that only the Police could arrest him.

Fonseka’s media secretary Senaka de Silva had also spoken supportively of the General.

When the political representatives tried to intervene they were curtly ordered to remain silent and not interfere in a matter of national security.

Interrogation

The Provost Marshall Wijesiri had then said that the General had to be taken into custody by the Military police for interrogation about certain offences committed by him while wearing the military uniform.

Since they were military offences it was the military Pol’ce that was entitled to arrest him, emphasised the Provost Marshall.

He also rapidly read out from his orders outlining the reasons for taking Sarath Fonseka into custody.

The charges under which Fonseka is to be interrogated included

a) Politicking whilst in uniform.
b) Conspiring against the Commander-in-Chief whilst in Service.
c) Harboring more than 1,500 deserters whilst on service.
d) Corrupt practices relating to military procurements.

Sarath Fonseka then protested vehemently and asserted that he would not leave the office unless and until the Police took him into custody and that the military Police had no authority to arrest him as he was now a civilian out of uniform.

The military Police officials seemed hesitant to proceed further in the face of the defiant stance adopted by Sarath Fonseka who reiterated that he was willing to submit to arrest by the Police but not the military Police.

Suddenly a fresh group of military personnel entered the room. They were led by Major-General Sumith Manawaduge, commanding officer of Colombo district operations in the Army.

Incidently it was Maj-Gen Manawaduge who was in charge of an earlier operation on January 26th-27th when a contingent of troops encircled the Lakeside Cinnamon Hotel where Sarath Fonseka and some associates were staying.

Sarath Fonseka family portrait-http://www.sarathfonseka.com

Manawaduge then barked out orders to the military personnel to take hold of Fonseka. At one point he had rasped to hesitating personnel “Ai balagana inne. Bellen allaganda” (Why are you just watching and waiting, grasp his throat).

Egged on by their commanding officer the soldiers then seized their former commander and tried to pull him out. But Fonseka held on to a table refusing to accompany them. He kept on shouting “Let the Police come. I will come then”.

When Senaka de Silva also protested , Maj-Gen Manawaduge ordered his men to arrest the ex-captain and hand him over to the Police for further questioning.

Spectacle

He then ordered soldiers to drag the general (adagena yande). The soldiers then grasped the hands and legs of Sarath Fonseka and forcibly dragged him along.

The politicians witnessing this disgusting spectacle of an ex-Army chief being humiliated in this way remonstrated with the army officers but to no avail as Maj-Gen Manawaduge simply ignored them.

Sarath Fonseka kept on shouting and struggling as he was forcibly dragged down the steps from the first floor. Some of the soldiers dragging the General were seen hitting their former commander in a bid to restrain him.

One soldier was seen delivering a powerful punch to the back of Sarath Fonseka’s head.

When the soldiers assaulted him the General retorted by resorting to colourful expressions and choice epithets in both the Sinhala and English languages.

The 59 year old General who had survived an LTTE suicide bomb attempt on his life in April 2006 was manhandled very roughly by the soldiers who dragged him down the stairs by pulling his hands.

At one point the struggling Fonseka’s flailing legs smashed into a window cracking the glass pane.

The General was wearing brown trousers and a white shirt at the time of arrest.

Handcuffed

After reaching ground level the General was handcuffed and then bodily carried towards a vehicle.

Fonseka then asked the soldiers to put him down saying he would walk without struggling. Thereafter a handcuffed Fonseka walked a very short distance to the bullet-proof Land Rover jeep in which he was taken to Navy headquarters.

He has been detained in a chalet within Naval headquarters premises.

Detaining Fonseka within Navy precincts is perceived as another attempt to humiliate and anger him as the ex-army chief was at loggerheads with his counterpart former Navy chief Admiral Karannagoda and had constantly undermined the navy during his tenure as Army chief.

Senaka de Silva was taken separately and reportedly handed over to the Police for questioning.

The political leaders at Fonseka’s office were prevented from leaving the place for nearly half an hour by the Army.

The Army also blocked mediapersons from photographing the “arrest” and reportedly confiscated film rolls and cameras from photojournalists working for domestic and foreign media.

Deplorable

The SLMC,DPF and JVP leaders who witnessed the deplorable drama have been informing media persons of what had happened exactly “He was dragged away in a very disgraceful manner in front of our own eyes” Rauff Hakeem told Reuters.Hakeem described the act as “authoritarian and vindictive”.

A JVP spokesman told Agency France-Presse (AFP) “The General refused to be taken away. They grabbed him and virtually carried him away after threatening the others. There must have been over a hundred soldiers”.

DPF leader Mano Ganesan told a Tamil newspaper that the General was “Dragged out bodily like a dog, taken downstairs, handcuffed and put into a vehicle”.

It was only a few hours earlier that Sarath Fonseka held a media briefing where he said that he was prepared to testify in any inquiry into alleged war crimes committed by Sri Lankan armed forces.

“I am definitely going to reveal what I know, what I was told and what I heard. Anyone who has committed war crimes should definitely be brought into the courts,” Gen Fonseka said at the briefing.

With this “arrest” any such possibility of Fonseka testifying has been ruled out in the near future.

The arrest of Fonseka comes at a time when he and other opposition leaders were engaged in preparing elaborate documentation for legal action challenging the Presidential election result

Opposition

Although President Rajapakse won with a majority of 1.8 million votes the opposition has refuted the figures and alleged that malpractices and manipulation on a massive scale had occurred.

Fonseka’s arrest could be a setback to opposition efforts to initiate legal action. It is mandatory that legal action should be taken within three weeks of the poll held on January 26th.

The arrest could also hamper Opposition efforts to contest forthcoming Parliamentary elections on a common platform spearheaded by General Fonseka. Though defeated at the Presidential hustings Fonseka yet remains a key political figure capable of mobilising broad support.

Opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe currently on a visit to New Delhi has condemned the arrest as “illegal”.

Meanwhile efforts are on to “gather” evidence justifying a court-martial trial of the ex-army chief by a military tribunal.

Lakshman Huligalle, director Media Centre of National Security and newly appointed and recently promoted Military spokesman Major-General Prasad Samarasinghe have both stated that the General has been detained for questioning into alleged military offences done while he was in service.

While interrogation with a view to court-martial Fonseka goes on one level It is learnt that other “investigations” and “probes” are also being undertaken concurrently.

Investigation

One line of investigation is about Fonseka’s complicity in an alleged Coup d’etat conspiracy against the Government.

Another probe is about Fonseka’s alleged involvement in an assassination plot against President Rajapakse and his two siblings Gotabhaya and Basil Rajapakse.

A third line of investigation is about General Fonseka’s role in the killings of “The Sunday Leader” Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge and Tamil National Alliance MP from Jaffna, Nadarajah Raviraj.

It appears that moves are afoot to keep the General detained indefinitely for a while and conduct the Parliamentary poll with him in custody.

The General’s arrest has evoked an international outcry with the UN, USA and Amnesty International expressing concern.

In a related development a bunch of investigative sleuths from the Police went to the General’s private residence on Queens road and removed his personal revolver.

Meanwhile Mrs. Anoma Fonseka has stated that she is very worried about her husband’s health as he has been deprived of medication.

Fonseka has to take specified medicine every six hours due to internal injuries sustained when a woman suicide bomber exploded herself at Army headquarters in an abortive assassination attempt.

  1. Its really disgusting this

If Mahinda really won he should be magnanimous but this action casts doubts about how genuine his victory really was.

Amazing work DBS. Who will believe that a journalist living in Canada scoops all scribes in Sri Lanka with precise details of happenings in the Island

Very well written under short notice

    All kudos to you DBS

  2. This action reveals the true nature of the Rajapakse regime. However this is a major blunder which will exacerbate the situation. This will result in backlash against the government even amongst its own supporters.

  3. Oh this is so terrible. Awful

I was against the General all this time but the way he has been treated makes me very sad and angry

My thanks to you Mr.Jeyaraj for writing all the details

  4. ..NO ihis is NOt a terrorist. And rule of LAW still applies in the west even to Presidents. See how Nixon had to quit. See how Congressman Jefferson was convicted and he had 90,000 dollars in his freezer. the RULE OF LAW must apply to all.

IF SF was as bad as you say he is , why wait until now? Why give an extension and promotion to a man CBK referred to as a “cad who cannot be trusted; all the women in the army will not be safe if i make him Army commander; and that man will want to sit in my seat”? That was allegedly when SF ran after CBK when he was about to be retired and wanted desperately to become Army Commander. He in turn got angry and waited to get even with her via Mahinda R; He said “i will fix that bloody bitch drunkard”. On his own he withdrew CBK’s security contingent even though she survived a terrorist attack. He punished the #3 in the Army Parami Kulatunge and did not give him a house in Army HQ and refused to give him his required protection; Parami was killed because SF allowed it to happen because he did not like Parami and others like him. SF harassed General Jayasuriya by getting the Military police to arrest his ADC on bogus charges the day before Jayasuriya was appointed as Army commander because he wanted his handpicked man Chandrasiri as a pliant commander. All this was known. All this was reported so why wait until now ? India is alleged to have given MR satellite monitoring information on SF visiting the JVP HQs while being CDS and in uniform in his Army convoy. Why now?

So why now is this man evil? IF it is true try him in open courts. MR and GR used him even though people recommended he not be given an extension because of his record. So why was he good to win the war but not now?

In 1962, the Christian Pro western anglicized officers who launched the coup against Mrs. B were TRIED IN OPEN COURT under civil law. They were found guilty and they appealed to the Privy Council in England a few of them got away(Sydney DeZoysa SSP and a few others including Gunawardene of the Navy) on a TECHNICALITY.

In 71, those goons in the JVP were also tried in civilian court. The charge was “waging war against Her Majesty’s govt.” because we were still a Dominion Republic then. They got a fair trial and some were acquitted but most were convicted and served their sentences. That buffoon JR released Wjeweera to spilt the left..Rest is history.

DO NOT repeat JR’s mistake. He incarcerated one of the most loved politicians of Sri Lanka; a man who reached out to Tamils; Vijaya K and kept him in jail with no charges on a bogus “naxalite plot”. This reminds me of that. I am sad to hear of the treatment of the man who helped Mahinda R and Gotabaya defeat the Tigers.

Give him a fair trial and present the evidence to the people of Sri Lanka and the civil courts. STOP harassing the man the Tiger terrorists were most afraid of.

  5. Regardless of weather SF is guilty or not, this arrest is a major mistake from the govt’s side. Altough I am supportive of MR and voted for his victory, I cannot approve this turn of events.

All this stupid action is going to do is to give unnecessary publicity to the UNP and create more negative publicity for the country. Why the govt does not understand this truly escapes me.

SF was a lost cause and people of the country showed him his true position. That was punishment enough. After all, SF DID contribute massively to the win against terrorrism and we all should give credit to him for that.

We all know SF talks more than he can walk. So his statments regarding war crimes is also to be taken in that context. Unless there is something we all do not know, I think it was a massive mistake to make this arrest now.

  6. Well done DBSJ. That was quick.

Fonseka’s mouth again let him down. He should have kept quiet about testifying against war crimes. In a game of chess who will tell their moves in advance.

  7. This is very bad but was to be expected under the ruthless Rajapaksha regime

    Mr.Jeyaraj

I owe you an apology. Earlier I thought you were pro-Mahinda and anti-Sarath and wrote you a few nasty e-mails which you ignored

I now realise that you are a true, real journalist not taking sides or supporting anyone

No one has written about the way this arrest was done like you with so much of detail> you criticise and endorse people depending on the matter or issue or simply report the facts without worry about whether it will offend this one or that one

Your article on the General’s arrest has made me revise my opinion about you

I am very sorry and am ashamed to have insulted you by email. I am truly sorry

Not to worry. No offence taken. Thanks for this response……………DBSJ

  8. I wonder if the erstwhile General was getting impatient, and wanted things to “move” this way…? He deliberately provoked Gotta towards this??

  9. “had constantly undermined the navy during his tenure as Army chief.”

In your own words Mr Jeyaeaj ,Fonseka is guilty of undermining the most important arm of the Srilankan security forces that battled the Tiger terrorists for 3 decades.

The most striking aspect of this article is the absence of Ranil from the scene, the puppet master who orchestrated this sore saga of throwing Fonseka in to the Lion’ s den.

Ranil achieved his goal with unexpected dividends. Now Ranil can parade the Green Elephant with total control as Fonny won’t be there to distract his campaigning.

If not for silly Fonny, Ranil’s ass would have been grass now.

Anyway Fonseka deserves what ever he gets. As a fellow southerner I am ashamed of this fellow southerner who went to the extent of betraying his own people to satisfy the lust of the pro Tiger lobby and its Foreign Mates from England Norway Canada and other European countries.to exact revenge from our brave President.

    May he rot in hell.

  10. I am ashamed to be called a Sri Lankan and to be in live in Sri Lanka to see in my own eyes the way a National Hero who was celebrated with Islandwide crackers for the destroying the 30year old terrorist war treated in humiliated manner to be taken to custody by a Junior officer in the military for reasons of “Military Offences”. Here we find a Supreme Military Commander who hunted down the LTTE is now being hunted by the leaders of this country while giving five star treatment to the former terrorist leaders who killed 600 police officers made government ministers and KP who provided arms and ships to LTTE to fight against the Sri Lankan Army. All loving Sri Lankans irrespective of what political color you belong should protest and disapprove the manner General Sarath Fonseka is being humiliated and disgrace in the eyes of whole of good loving Sri Lankans. Its our duty all Sri lankans and rise above all political differences to protect our national hero who bought 30 year old terrorist menace to a complete halt in this country. Do we all Sri Lankans want to see our National Hero who bought peace to this country languishing in Jail or face death sentences. Its time all Sri Lankans do something for this country before our political leaders destroy this country by eliminating precious Sri Lankan Hero who bought glory to this country which no other country in this world was able to do by destroying LTTE completely

  12. Hi David,
this is the democracy of Sri lanka. people of sri lanka deserve to have this kind of president. I don’t know why they re elected this man. this is just the beginning of the devil’s rule. more to come. wait and see.

  13. Why are you so surprised? Who on Earth do you think is running Sri Lanka?

Mate, seriously I’m surprised there hasn’t been more bloodshed. Then again, maybe it’s only just began.

This has nothing to do with Tamils, except some of us were idiotic to vote for Sarath. We should never have been told to do this by our so called Tamil leaders.

The bottom line is that Rajapakse has the support of the Sinhalese becaue they are racist and they want Tamils exterminated.

Our only hope is a separate state and nothing will ever change that.

You need to stop pretending otherwise.

  14. There is nothing disgraceful in the way SF was arrested.

SF should have known better than to struggle like a common criminal trying to escape when ordered to turn himself in. Had he obliged in the way he had done after he was manhandled out of his office, there would have been no disgrace, broken glass or trauma to his head.

This arrest too is of no surprise. Whether he is right or wrong in his allegations, whether war crimes were committed or not, no government in the west or east would sit on its back doing nothing when a man who had had access to national secrets is trying to defect!

People like Hakeem and Mano speaking for SF is
nothing but politics and its even more disgusting. Messages emanating from the state department, UN, AI all show very clearly who’s baby SF has become lately.

Personally, I had lot of respect for the man not so long ago, but now, I have absolutely none. I do not believe that he tried to ouster MR regime through a coup or that he was any more corrupt than others. But I do know that the man was in contact with the opposition long before he left his office but that is hardly a crime considering the ways of this country.

However, he needs to be made to understand in no uncertain terms that he cannot hold a country to ransom. It is one thing to call TN politicians political jokers or that SL belongs to Sinhalese only. Its a completely different matter to blurt out national secrets in public or worst with parties with vested interests to settle one’s own personnel vendetta with GR or MR.

Whatever happens to SF, its all his own doing. His stupidity is going to cost the whole country its self respect and much more. Putting him behind bars is only a temporally fix at best.

  15. If the Retd. Army General had followed the prime rule of Military inquisitions on “Comply and Complain” all such need for “use of appropriate force to arrest” would not have arisen. SF should have quietly and in appropriate dignity relevant to an “Officer and a Gentleman” accompanied the Military Police Provost-Marshall Brigadier Wijesiri to custody.
SF has, according to this article. ranted. raved, refused and even ravaged the building in a futile and ungentlemanly bid to behave more like a common criminal or a dangerous animal that had been cornered.
Titilating and newsworthy stuff for the media and an opportunity to exploit for the opponents of the government, but in the hurly burly areana of politics, SF has made himself a target for criticism by his behaviour.

  16. I am shocked and appalled to read this news. The way the Military Police had treated him is beyond belief! How can they manhandle a man who still carries the scars of a suicide bomb attack and who needs medicine every 6 hours? We have heard that the military has now denied his medicine too.

  17. Since SF is not an Army officer anymore, he cannot be tried by a court martial for alleged military offenses committed while in uniform. Conversely, if the said offenses are not illegal under civil law, he cannot be tried by a civilian court either. So he’s in a loophole. The only way to close the loophole would be for SF to be recalled for active duty and then tried by a court martial once back in uniform.

  18. this is very unrealistic act done by the king and his family. this is a bad sign 4 our democracy.

somebody told me that SF can be tried in a military court if he hasnt been out of the uniform for over 6 months. is this true???
the whole court martial thing is smart strategy by the royal family…
    I truly hope it backfires!!!!
but then again “finding” incriminating evidence can’t be a toughie for the royals too so most probably SF is done for!

  21. No one should forget SF led the army which committed unimaginable war crimes for Tamils people , even today the areas where Tamils people were massacred is not accessible for independent observers. Tamil people voted for SF only to regect MR familly mafia…

But the behaviour of the Sri Lankan regime with their own “hero” should give a good taste of the state terrorism to the majority singalse which ignored cynically tamil people’s cries in the hand of war criminals….

  22. This is really astonishing. This clearly implies that SL is heading to Dictatorship. There are no signs for prosperous Sri Lanka. MR and his Clan never allow that to happen!!!!

Since SF is not an Army officer anymore, he cannot be tried by a court martial for alleged military offenses committed while in uniform.
    —————————————————————————————
These technicalities may be important in the west but not in good ol Srilanka. Who says he has to live till the trial or courtmartial. Fonseka is a very resourceful man. He will somehow find a grenade and throw it at his guards and try to escape and get shot.

Interestingly he has been incarcerated in the Navy compound. Is it because the Army cannot be trusted?

The million dollar question is what do the Army rank and file feel about all this humiliation of their former boss. Therein lies the answer to Srilankas future.

Someone mentioned on this blog, Fonseka deliberately provoked this action. Hmmmm—–food for thought indeed. Did the Rajapakshes especially that sledgehammer Gota fall into the trap.

  24. I supported MR and thought he would do good for this country. But this is wrong very wrong, either mahinda corrects its mistake or everyone will start to hate him…

  25. To put it in a nutshell, its absolutely disgusting.
Then again what can you expect in a country where people have a very short memory.

Thanks DBS for yet another great scopp.

  26. What an irony.

LTTE might have wanted to physically eliminate SF.

Alas ! Now Sinhales have humiliated and taken away the dignity of ex- Army Chief and made him virtually a dust. There could be no other disgrace than this.

Those who wanted to take revenge on SF will rejoice..

  27. Got to love this…

As DBSJ correctly predicted, each party will try to prosecute the other when they get their chance…. and the world will know the true extent of the atrocities these people committed when they were in power against the Tamils.

There is a saying in Tamil,
    அரசன் அன்றே கொல்வான், தெய்வம் நின்று கொல்லும், நீதி என்றும் வெல்லும்..

Mahind and Gota your turn will soon come…!!

  28. If something like this can happen to an exgeneral who was treated like a hero, in this country, we can imagine how a normal citizen who opposes the governemnt og army will be treated…! Long live democratic Sri Lanka…!

  29. this is not right at all………………. about the incident in the 27th of January.
The whole floor was not booked only a few rooms.
The Trans Asia managment had not know anything about the issue, thus said only a few rooms where booked by pre-resevation.

The “assault” was carried out by the army. Mahinda had no right to use the police or any other armed forces at the time because he was clearly no longer president at the time.
The conclusion is that Gotabe Rajapakse had the issue under his control. This shows that we have no right under the Mahinda. Mahinda and his family hold all major possition in the State of Sri Lanka.

At this rate, none of are safe………. Sri Lanka is greatly under threat……. I say its time to stand and face the issue than hide behind closed doors.

We need to condem this arrest as aa publc not just in websites!!

  30. Guys, this is how Tamils were arrested and are arrested in Sri Lanka. It was tolerated by the Sinhalese and now it is not at the doorstep but inside the house !!!

I am proud of the stand of Sarath Fonseks for justice and to bring war criminals to court.

The reason MR rigged the election to win was to be in power so that he would not be taken to the War Crimes Court in the Hague.

MR will do everything in his totalitarian power to prevent any witness coming out to testify.

He forgets to understand that the creator of the universe will bring justice on all the war criminals.

  31. I support the arrest and incarceration of Sarath Fonseka. The man is a total dictator with a huge ego and if he had won the presidential elections Sri Lanka would have been plunged into fascism. His behaviour has been abominable both in and out of the uniform. Calling people “kalaveddas”, “gorillas”, “mad dogs” is poor form, certainly not something one would expect form a man aspiring to be president. From his interviews you can see that he is a vindictive, almost megalomaniac man. I have lost count of the number of times he has claimed “I am the people’s president!” despite the fact that he lost the election. Putting him in jail will help save Sri Lanka a LOT of trouble.

  32. Sri Lanka is used to such incidents and will no doubt forget about this in a couple of days. Even a dog dies on the road there is hardly anyone who will volunteer to move it.

Just as Lasantha and scores of others have been killed abducted and hardly a tear shed by the majority of people. The saying ‘Ape Paduae Inna Denne’ – leave us to ourselves, is widely followed in Sri Lanka. As long as it is not us, why should we bother? Others also follow the saying, ‘Wasi Pathete Hoiya’ – Join the winning side. So when a man is down he really knows who his friends are. Patriot today, Traitor tomorrow.

This is the tragedy of Sri Lankan society. In 1983 when Tamils were dragged out of their houses and burnt alive or bludgeoned to death, there were a few who voiced concern and helped the victims. The killers and murderers went free and after a few years things were forgotten. Then came the resulting war culminating in the mass killings on both sides. The stifling of the media, abductions, killings etc. 300,000 people kept in forced detention for 8 mths. All justified in the name of Patriotism. Now too a Patriot turned Traitor, dragged out his office, actions justified in the name of Patriotism.

Question is – Is something wrong with us as a nation? or Is this just another International Conspiracy? Such incidents in other third world countries met with an appropriate response. Marcos, Musharraf, Thaksin were all thrown out. But is Sri Lanka we are so literate and so cool that nothing can move us. Serendipity?

  33. I am not sure to laugh or cry , Other than think of KARMA,. Although this or similar happnings were not un expected .Think what happned just after CBK left office to her. Does Mahinda bros think they are going to be in office for ever ? There will be a time for the KARMA to catch up with MR bros. Similarly no doubt there will be a time for Sinhala State/Nation to catch up with their KARMA for the deeds they have done and are doing to the Tamil nation. Be patient and await events.

  34. Sad state of Sri Lanka.

But, one may argue that everyone has to pay fo their karma!

Now, if Sarath had to pay this way, one wonders what Mahinda has to pay.

  35. Mahindha Rajapakse is nothing but a dictator. Srilanka has joined Burma and Iran. There is no democracy in Sri Lanka.
If this shameful, inhumane treatment can be meted out to a War Hero and a former Army Commander, We should be able to guess what would have happened to the innocent Tamils and Tamil Tiger suspects by the Srilankan forces!
It is up to the west to bring sanctions against MR regime. Also India can’t any more hide behind fighting the Tiger slogan. India must come out against the undemocratic tendency by the Rajapakse’s government.

  36. History repeat itself. Unwinnable Piraba, been defeated by SF and humiliated, then Unwinnable SF been defeated by MR and humiliated, so when the MR will be defeated and humiliated? time will tell..

All thease people are war crminales been/will be punished by one way or another…

  37. Its a pity alright that an army commander worshiped for his heroic deeds just 07 months ago is treated this way.
Yet the fact is this same army commander is culpably responsible for creating this brutal regime that does not respect law and human rights and acts with impunity.

When journalists and dissenting voices, innocent Tamil civilians and businessmen were abducted labelled in Colombo as Tiger informants/supporters, no protests were allowed, calling those who protested as “traitors”.

This same army commander too went on State media to threaten journalists then.

If he had not been an ally in propping up this regime, he would not be living through this brutality himself.

  38. Thank you very much for providing an accurate report. All decent people would wish that the described arrest of Sarath Fonseka had not taken place. However, as you have pointed out in your well researched articles, the Fonseka Candidacy had come about for a whole lot of wrong reasons, even if one were to disregard the issue of his suitability for the task. As a result, his conduct was not proper at all.

It was evident that he assumed that he was going to win, he assumed that he had immunity because he was a Presidential Candidate and a national hero to boot, he assumed that no action will be taked because of his threat to reveal “secrets” and he assumed that the International Community would rush to his rescue when orienting his conduct.

Late Prabhakaran swallowed the “dead rope” provided by the Internatioal Community and expected to be rescued from the banks of Nandikadal. It looks as if Sarath Fonseka has swallowed the other end.

  39. .
The man who went for the ‘kill’, is being dragged like a dog.

He was not arrested for bombing and killing thousands of Tamils, but for planning to kill a Sinhalese.

    God bless Srilanka.
    🙂

  40. yep if he is not recalled u cannot try him in an army court, but if he’s recalled and doesnt accept it then he would be jailed for that….

  41. the king and his family
    King is always right!
I am sure His excelence know what he is doing good for the people because HE is people King .
Our (new) Royal family is untouchable (from now on )

  42. Prabakaran and those who died with him must be in fits of laughter, wherever they may be. The rest of the world is watching too. Please Sri Lanka wake up and stop this stupidity. The need of the hour is a true leader who must be selfless, loving and caring to put country first.

  43. It is sad to note that a war hero who shed blood for his Motherland been treated this way.

However, General Fonseka seems to have fallen into a real trap on the day he decided to venture into a filed unknown to him.

It is interesting to note the absence of H.E. MR in Sri Lanka at this time and it is more interesting to note the absence of Messers. RW and Magala S at the scene.

Also, it is very interesting to note how fast DBS gets minute details of everything that happens in Sri Lanka before anyone can wink.

  44. Really for a war hero it is an disgraced, an unforseen event. if really whomever commits any mistake, the fair trial to be conducted and then be punished. but this type huniliation brings to discredit to srilanka in international circles.

  45. Accusations, against SF, nothing more than one of many methods to defend MR’s anti-democratic rules.. It is nothing to do with genuine questions about his loyalty, but everything about
“you do not agree with me, thus you are a traitor.”
In our deeply divided and economically deteriorated society there are large people who are very angry and are ready to label someone they disagree with as a traitor.

Winning democracy in Sri Lanka: ‘A process not a lightning flash’ …and At What Price???

  46. If anything good has come out of this it is that the shine has gone off the term “patriot” in the sense it is used in Sri Lanka.

The uncouth, vengeful and ambitios General SF, The abusive, ethically clueless, vindictive Gotabhaya, the avaricious, deceiving Basil Rajapakse and the Proudest President of them all who embodies all these qualities… All great patriots of Sri Lanka. The term patriot has been so devalued in Sri Lanka that most honest, public spirited people are loathe to call themselves one. Its a term reserved for the bullys prepared to kill anybody for self aggrandisement.

  47. He is a trator and trying to betray his own army soldeirs. He is mentally ill and mad. Luckily he didn’t become the Sri Lankan president. Should be punished.

  48. I saw this coming.Since the day he went into he was talking BS. He is a taitor who betrayed te country. I hope he learnt alesson.

  49. How can Tamils even for that mater Sinhala civilians expect any good from Mahinda rule In the foreseeable future. The Srilanka Means lost paradise. Its constitution is illegal, its rulers and its agents and liers Its Pseudo Interlectulas are either singing the same lies for their supper , keeping mum,or exileing the country. Its finances in the ruins, its armed forces, judiciary are politicised, media and INGOs have been silenced or ousted out of the country. Ruling elite have been squondering the countries wealth. Can a country sink any more than this and call itself a soveign state. ??? What UN’s Ban is doing ? Is he also sing(K)ing or sining for his supper???

  50. Now everyone can see who the real dictator is!!!! People have been taken for a ride by MR & Co.. & unfortunately, this may be the beginning of the end of Democracy in Sri Lanka!!!

  51. I have a parable …….some one though that he/she owned a land and came to know that it has been occupied by some peasants who claim that they own they land. The one who though that the peasants have forcibly occupied his/her land sent a supervisor with an order “get the land for me ……by any means”……..hey intelligent readers you know where i am arriving at ……….

  52. I wish all Rajapaksa family members will pay for this in a short time. Gota, Basil & MR should have an end like Premadasa. That’s how Sri Lanka can be saved.

  53. Dear DBS,I voted to Mahinda last election and that will be the last time I shall vote for him.Sri lankan democrecy gone to the dogs.
If you are able try to find about Mahindas gahilla and what truth and not.

  54. Wasn’t there a better way of arresting him? This is truly a personal revenge, nothing esle. Eeven Saddam Hussein was treated humanely when he was arrested by US forces. I was never a supporter of SF but I have my lost my faith with MR.

  55. Unbelievable arrest, The people who arrested war hero, will punished by god, very soon. just wait and see….

  56. The sunday Times, predicted that the arrest was imminent, so the good old general, should have seen it coming. He had made numerous statements predicting his impending fate, at the hands of his one time ” amba yalluwa “, in english it means ” mango friends “.

As Mr. Jeyaraj, states that he is being held in a chalet at the naval headquarters, he must be in some form of comfort, unlike his loyalist Capt. Senaka de Silva, who whilst to come to the aid of his boss now has to endure the squalor of a cell at a police station, The poor bloke, no one seems to care for him.

It is a well known fact that the officers of the navy including their old boss are at loggerheads with the general, any provacative action by the rank and file of the army still loyal to their old boss will have no chance in hell of succee
    ding.

During the ill fated 1962 coup, I had an uncle, who was one of the 28 in detention, he become a crown withness, with 3 others, he was accomadated in a comfortable chalet at the Panagoda Army Camp, along with the other three in total comfort while the others were at the Welikade Prison.

In my opinion, the biggest mistake that the general had made was to contest the presidential elections, as the leder of the UNP’s brother, had told a friend of mine ” Ranil is not contesting, he has no chance in hell of winning, we have found someone else to take his place, I cannot divulge his name ‘

Who appears as the rampant and ravaging santa claus, who as the liberator of the sinhala nation, assumed that the masses will appreciate for winning the war against the mighty LTTE, the common man and woman thought that a known devil is better than an unknown angel, voted for their ultimate saviour.

Whoever who planned and devised the strategy for the current President to call a poll, 2 years ahead of it’s due date should be congraulated, for being an astute person, where the incumbent played on the minds and the theory, that things have to be done hot hot, in 2 years the masses may forget about the cursed war.

Whatever happens let there be justice and fairplay in the land of the yakko clan, they are now begining to claw each other, hopefully they will destroy themselves in their pursuit of petty revenge, for the doings of 1958,1971 [ in Jaffna ], 1977, 1979. and 1983.

Good luck to one and all still living in this hell of a paradise., what goes around comes around. a j.

  57. what a bull shit this?whats the government is doing?this will be effect them in forthcoming election.peoples will give them a lesson.so this time everyone should be unity and save the country.we must give a lesson to the government.

  58. I remind all the viewers’ of Sir Issac Newton’s 3rd law of motion. Mark my word, it is just a matter of time before Rajapakse brothers pay for their own debts.

  59. Knowing SF and his rowdy attitude, I’m sure he must have given a hard time , so the MPolice had to drag him out.

  60. The fair name of democracy in the country – at least the little that was left of it – is being muddied in the eyes of the world. Where in the democratic world have two main
candidates accused each other of plotting to kill the “other “candidate and their families. Where are those pundits who continue to flay critics when it is said
Sri Lanka has for sometime slipped into a Failed Society?
Fonseka, by no means, is innocent. He is equally responsible for the extra-ordinary decline. But the way, the whole thing was done lacks finesse and has shades of
    oncoming fascism written all over.

I wonder what those celebrated sycophants from those fine schools of higher learning who sing the praise of
Govt have to say on these theatrics? Fonseka’s family and his lawyers must be enabled access to him forthwith and he must be taken out of the reach of his Naval nemesis – at least for propriety’s sake.

    ISS

  61. Jeyaraj,

Another one of your bullshit ploys?? Better stay hidden in Tamil Nadu, your “homeland” and HANDS OFF SRI LANKA.

    ….and Go Get a Life!

  62. THIS IS NOT TRUE.Me to is shame to be a Sri Lankan.Hitler is better than this RP govt. They should have done these planing befor SF planing to go to Presidental Elections.Vinning by mafia way and taking all the main supporters in and also killing the the midia personals, what are they thinking? They Must Know The World is Watching!I think MR wil soon KISS THE AIRPORT GROUNR 10 tims, this time? Now people can eat “KIRI BATH” thats what they wonted, electing the Mafia Gang.
    Kumar.

  63. It,s written in the scriptures that sinhaleese as a poppulation will be wiped out in the distant future. I guess this is the beggining.I am a sinhaleese man living overseas, but i have to tell you when it comes to unity amongst your own, our people will top the list for the wrong reasons. harima balu jathiyak. lajjai katha karandawath.

  64. In Tamil there is a saying “ Aarasan Andru Kollum Thivam Nindru kollum” which means that the King will punish then and there whereas the God will punish later. This is what happened to SF. I am not saying the things are happening to SF is correct however I am surprise that the people of Sri Lanka still thinks that they have a clean and honest leaders.

What the Government showing that they are capable of going to any extent to do what ever they want. Look at the way Gota speaks in the BBC interview. Look at his facial reaction this is unaccepted. I wonder what is going to happen to SL people.

All in all Singalayoo moodayoo kavum kanda Yothayoo

  65. Writing was there on the wall for SF. If he was lucky enough to survive, he was to languish the rest of his life in a prison to fulfill the whims and fancies of one individual for unfounded allegations.

What can we do or say, than to condemn this regime and the man behind all these who is none other than Gotabhaya Rajapakse.

    May the truth prevail.

  66. the people of sri lanka will be able eperince more and more rutheless actions of this kind by the rajapaksha administration in the future.the people of sri kanka missed a good chance to change the regime which never knows gratitude to its own peple.

  67. There is a limit to being revengeful. Pity that things turned out this way. We must have shocked the whole world! The world will now realise that there are wolves in sheep’s clothing. Confidence in the governance of Sri Lanka will become thin, internationally.
In a predominantly Buddhist country this is shocking!

  68. arrested of sarath fonseka is most right thing taken by government. He lost his demand by presenting his foolishness. If we allowed him to do every thing it may give rise to start terrorism again.

  69. I AM SINHALESE AND EDUCATED AND NOT NAIVE I BELIEVE AND KNOW AND FELT THE SRI LANKAN SINHALA PEOPLE ARE VERY RACIST ABSOLUTELY AND MOST OF THEM HAVE FALSE SENCE OF PRIDE !!!
SRI LANKANS WHO LIVE OVERSEAS MAY COMPLAIN THAT THIER ADOPTED COUNTRIES ARE PRUJUDICE AND RACIST IF THEY CAN ALL ONLY LOOK IN THE MIRROR …… DOWN WITH RAJAPKAYA HE NEEDS TO BE BUPED OFF !!! IS THERE ANY EDUCATED MAN WHO CAN RUN THAT COUNTRY WITH BEING CORRUPT AND PREJUDISE !!!! DOW GOES THE COUNTRY THEY BLAMED THE TAMILS ALL ALONG NOW LETS SEE WHERE WE GO WITH THIS HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

  70. State Terrorism at the higest order. Shame on the international governments to lie back and watch this going on. Obviousley! No one is allowed to speak the truth or challange the Government. But! there is Karma- what goes around will come around..can’t wait.

  71. Speaks volumes about the “Victory” the UPFA claimed. This is sadistic depraved behaviour on the part of the GOSL . Shame on them.. Shame on Rajapakses.

  72. He is reponsible for thousands of tamil females tear …. you have to answer the question for God court….. thanks God…….

  73. This is a very bad development when considered in the context of democracy in Sri Lanka. With an 1.8 million vote cushion If I am MR I would have invited SF to join and rule the country democratically or at least leave him alone to do his politics and get his experience. This is a very very bad thing to do to a one time war hero. I wonder whether the margin is really 1.8 million as they say.

  74. I am ashamed of my country. If the General has done anything wrong then he should be tried in the civilian court. He continuously said that he will allow him to be arrested by the police which should have been the correct procedure. Why the military?
There criminals outside having there way and a decorated war hero who was given a guard of honour and released from service is now being questioned on ‘military offenses’. This is a joke.
Every citizen should have the freedom to do what they want and say what they want. If you cross your boundaries, then the law of the state should be activated and not the military law. As far as I know we are not a military regime.

  75. OMG, What a turn up of events. Hero to Zero in no time. I have seen somewhere SF’s wife crying for SF’s safety. I hope she understands now how all the tamil wives cried when their family was dragged into prison on terrorism charges. Well let the show begin.

  76. Minister Keheliya is addressing the media , stating General was arrested for his mistakes / wrong doing during the his period as the Army Commander. What Bull shit. These fellows talk different things at different times. If General has done any wrong , why the hell they were errecting hoardings with his photograph along with the Persident to celebrate the ending of war. These tales should be told to the Konde bendapu Cheenu. Disgraceful.

  77. Hay Manawadu
You are disgrace the Richmond Traditions. You and Your family will suffer for this disgracement eternally

  78. The King and his family.
Do not worry King is back to our motherland,
General , be clear to nee down to Knig ask for parton!
You will free to go to USA.

  79. I am Sure, Rajapakshe will reap what he sow very soon. Who says Sri Lanka is a democracy, Its a Kingdom..

Rajapakshe is the King all kin Ko..

  80. I just wonder whether the major ‘offence’ SF committed was to run against MR. This should be carefully verified by all patriots, and make sure that the rights of all Sri Lankans are safeguarded, regardless who sits at the top.

I accuse both SF and MR for stooping to lowest levels like newbie clowns… totally disregarding their effect on Sri Lankans here and abroad.

I deplore both of them; because neither could find a respectable, more civilized ways of avoiding this collision which is going to hurt country for quite sometime. Failure to find that path is FAILURE IN LEADERSHIP.

I was looking for that trait in MR in particular; as he claimed he was more experienced… but alas… the outcome is a very disappointing

  81. It is too bad, Fonseka was a way ahead of over confident. When he stated at the election meetings that he would take all Rajapakshers into custody the next day after the election once he becomes the President. How dare him to say that to a sitting President and was very obvious that it was not an easy task to defeat him. Are there any choice for Rajapakshers keep somebody at loose until he wins an election and send all of them to jail. Moreover he is cliqueing with foriegn diplomats, media personals and was digging the graves for Rajapakshe group. He also must realize President Rajapakse is the man who gave him authority, support and the adequate protection and the leadership to defeat LTTE. How mean if he turns back and exposing all the National security information and secrets related to war, to the international community. He is a traitor. His behaviour is not only politically motivated but also a threat to the National Security. Rajapakshe should take an action. The military should carried him away as he was not corporating his arrest.

  82. Thanks DBSJ for this ” eye witness” report. Even journalists in SL cannot give an eyewitness acount. If they do so they wont be alive now.
This incidebnt was expected long time ago. Thats why the election results were manipulated. SF too would have done the similar traetment toPuksaya family. This is what the tamils wanted. Waiting for the blood bath in South SL

  83. Hurrah for Democracy

The tyranny of the majority at it’s best. This is nonsense. Our Srilanka deserves better.

    Here’s a different take.

Our post independence constitution had safeguards against such tyranny. These safeguards were taken off by the constitutional experts NM Perera / Colvin R Desilva gang. They were from the left. So much for the left.

Those effected immediately were they who’s mother tongue wasn’t Sinhalese.

And now my dear friends we have come a full circle.
We have brought down the house on our selves.

We who deprived the rights of our Non Sinhala brothers and sisters are responsible for the current situation in our motherland. And, now it’s our turn to hand in the same rights we have enjoyed.

Truly, the best is yet to come.

    Enjoy.

  84. MR, GR, BR and family I wonder if they are buddhist.
If so I am sure they belive in retribution, and they are not aware what is going to be their future. The same action will behold them too

    SM

  85. Tritors like Karuna who killed nearly 600 Sinhala Police officres and killed a temple full of Budist Monks and Sinhala worshipers is now SLFP deputy leader and a Minister.
A goon called Pillayan who killed hundrerds of Sinhala villergers near Ampari, Polanaruwa is a friend of MR and Basil.
The hero who eradicated terrorrisam in SL and destroyed the LTTE is a tritor, TODAY, just because he contested against MR.
WHAT HAS HAPPNED TO THIS BUDIST COUNTRY OF OURS?
    THIS COUNTRY IS MORALLY BANKRUPT!!!
OUR POLITICIANS HAVE LOST THEIR MORAL COMPAS!!
SO WHO IS TO BE BLAMED?
I THINK ALL THE VARIOUS RELIGIOUS LEADERS HAVE LET DOWN OUR SOCITY. OUR VARIOUS CLERGY ARE ETHER POLITICKING OR TURNING A BLIND EYE TO WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OUR COUNTRY. THEY SHOULD SPEAK UP AGAINST THE EVIL POLITICIANS AND THEIR POLICIES.

  86. Dear DBSJ
A great piece of writing. As a journo you are par excellence.

Cry the beloved country.VP must be laughing in his grave.
Hara Kiri is the only thing I can say.Poor Mother Lanka is in for more troubled times.SAD SAD SAD
    REVI UNNI

  87. I am not totally surprised of the events that has been taking place in post election SL. General is naïve to believe that Rajapakses are going to spare him after he uttered that he will give evidence to any tribunal investigating alleged ‘war crimes’ by SL forces. Even if had won the presidency, General would have thrown Rajapakses in jail too. No teas lost for any of these war criminals.

  88. As stated by me earlier there is another terror outfit has taken over replaceing one,Next to face arrest will be mangala, mano ganesha etc.

Addios to democracy and mahinda is paving the way for one party rule like in Burma , Iran and China , They are his buddies and role model .

What can any body do, thats what the majority Sinhalese wanted.
They never learn anything .Keep on making the same mistake.Only when another Tamil militant group become podominant they talk about political solution. As things are they are country is ruined.

  89. As stated by me earlier there is another terror outfit has taken over replacing one,Next to face arrest will be mangala, mano ganeshan etc.

Addios to democracy and mahinda is paving the way for one party rule like in Burma , Iran and China , They are his buddies and role model .

What can any body do, thats what the majority Sinhalese wanted.
They never learn anything and.Keep on making the same mistake.Only when another Tamil militant group become dominant they talk about political solution. As things are the country is ruined.

  90. He deserves this more than anyone else in this country. I support MR, GR, BR for taking such a courageous decision to jail him. That is where he belongs. We have enough issues to deal with.

    Kudos to Srilanka.

  91. 1. Diresh
Amazing work DBS. Who will believe that a journalist living in Canada scoops all scribes in Sri Lanka with precise details of happenings in the Island
    ——————————————-
Strangely enough, people outside of SL have a better idea of the happenings there than people living in SL do. Simply because of the censorship problems in the Island.
Therefore truth tellers often report to people outside Lanka and not to the local media

  92. I think it was when Lasantha was killed that I wrote in this forum that SL is not just bad for Tamils but for Sinhalese too. I aslo stated in that manner that the LTTE and Tamils have already won. – The social and political fabric in SL is now altered forever. The State has now discovered that all the effective terrorist tools used on Tamils can also be usd on its Sinhalese enemies. – Good luck SL.

The Tamil message was, clear. We together will enjoy this country or will suffer together. But, Sinhalese enjoying the rights without the Tamils cannot be tolerated.

Today, SL is not good for any one, except for the people in power, exactly like in China. Any real or perceived threats to the people in power will be dealt within or outside the law of the land.

While the poor Kandasamy in the deep North has lost his wife children, house, limbs and his lifelihood to the State terrorism, the poor Appuhamy in the deep South is counting his days to the arrival of State terror at his entrance.

  93. It is sad to see the turn of events. This sort of publicity is the last thing the country needs as the parties within and without who did not want us to end terrorism would be rubbing their hand in glee.
The delicate situation has to be handled with fairness and magnanimity by President Rajapakse. The leaders of the UNP/JVP/TNA who lured General Fonseka in to this unholy mess should act sensibly and advice him not to mouth off wild challenges until they can be proved in a court law. The whole country is in unenviable position, and realize we are in a hole and stopping digging.

  94. Comment#20. – This happned to Tamils all the time and may be happening even now as I type this comment.

Get used to it, the previlaged majority community, as the State terror organ has now learned the same tools used to kill / torture Tamils can work on the Sinhalese too.

  95. I am so happy about the events taking place in Sri Lanka!!
You Sinhalese deserve this. You brought the Indians to kill the Tamils and SF is coming out with the truth which will hurt India if a war crimes inquiry takes place. SF’s arrest took place soon after the Indian delegate’s visit to Colombo.

  96. This shows what Mahinda is. He is an insecure nervous man who is intoxicated with power. We need to take MR away now otherwise it will happen to any citizen who opposes him. This shows how brutal is MR and Gota, and I am sure same fate will befall on MR and Gota and the rest. SF is a war hero. He has many short comings, but treat him like this,…….I am speechless, sad and disgusted with MR .

  97. Which party he may be I am not worried. Politics is not my concern. But the way how things have taken place with regard to the arrest of this hero whom our Almighty God gave this mother land to defeat the terrorism which was in this land for 30yrs is really unbelievable….
Any way we pray to our Lord who sees every thing that’s happening would defnetely punish the ones who have initiated this situation to General SF. Every thing is under HIS control. Have faith in Christ He is the Judge!
Even a natural disaster would stuck on these people who are behind all this. Let’s pray in one accord for God’s protection on this man.and god may decide on the punishment of the others.
Dear Mrs Fonseka and the daughters your family and General is in our daily prayers. Everybody is praying.Pls have faith in the living God our Saviour Jesus Christ . He will bring him back to you. He will protect him .Ask God to cover him with the precious blood of Jesus ! May God bless The General,Mrs.Fonseka,2 daughters & the son-in-law.

  98. If anybody try to overthrow a government or a president democratically elected, by a military coup must severely punished. It is a threat to democracy. The retired general loved by Srilankans, became a betrayer now ,because of JVP and Mangala.

The persons whom responsible for this sad incident are JVP and the Mangala. JVP responsible for brought SFinto politics and all they need is to fulfill their sinister ideas using SF against MR.
JVP now need SF to be their leader because they knew in general election without SF, they gonna lose .

  99. a black mark for srilankan history when it comes of modern time war winnings.realy made me shame the way srilanka treats there one time hero!!

  100. There is a saying that comes to my mind:

“You can’t teach a pig to sing. It’s a waste of time and it annoys the pig”.

Rajapakse & Co pigs don’t want to know what democracy is about, and if anyone tries to do the right thing it annoys hell out of them.

  101. do uo all remeber “SADAM” hussain, it’s going be nother IRAQ, nothing else .
who ever voted for MR responsible for this, u all have given them NUCLEAR WEPON ………result will be so dangerous, wait & see

  102. It is very clear now that Sri Lanka is heading towards dictatorship under Mahinda’s regime. I realised what path he wil follow when he admired and followed leaders of Iran, Burma etc. Sooner Sri Lanka will be like former Iran under Sadam Hussen, and no one will be able to speak against M.R. Everyone talks against him will be annihilated.
I feel very concerned and sorry about the future of Sri Lanka
    The is called dictatorship.

  103. our SL ppl relize the real thing always late ………god bless our SL guys who ha old thinking patterns.
    Thunuruwange sarani srilanka ………..

  104. Fonseka deserves this for saying “The country Srilanka belongs to the Sinhalees majority, but the Tamils can stay at the mercy of the Majority”. Any-how, nothing unexpected has happened in an undemocratic state like Srilanka. Any-way, between MR and SF, there is no lesser evil, therefore needless to worry. I am only reminded of the incident where VP ordered the arrest of Maathaiya and finished him off from the face of this earth. But now it is good for the Eealam Tamils, when the enemy divided and fighting among them-selves.

  105. SF was right to say that he will reveal war crimes regardless of who did it. If Sri lanka wants to come clean, nothing wrong in punishing war crimes if it had occured. This is not national security.
America could have won Afhan war if they can kill 20,000 civilians. SF was responibale for killing Tamils. Now, God is punishing him, next is Rajapaksa and the gang.

  106. Afraid of the dark. Afraid of the dark. Afraid of the dark clouds. Seems like all the propaganda before the elections about Idi Amin, Hitler that were on our TVs were not referring to SF?

Point of historical interest. Remember how King Charles-I acted in England that led to Oliver Cromwell and the puritans and the beheading of Charles-I?

  107. Dear All,

The Enlightment has long been DEAD now. The history tells us that the humanity never learns from its mistakes and failures. In the end, everything goes arround and comes arround. Everything what VP did to others, finally came back to himself. Everything, what SF did to the Tamils, has now come back to him. And whatever Rajapakse & Co did, do and is going to do to the Tamils and others, will come back to them one day…definitely. This is the secret of the Universal Law !!!

  108. what is more disgusting is that our people are still remained silent without taking to the road, it is only people power can put a FULL STOP to this family run dictatorial regime

  109. This is ridiculous. If the allegations (only allegations) deserve investigation and if evidence is found to deserve a fair trial do so. Don’t humiliate a man who had done yeoman service to the country. Beside being one of the most respected democracy, why resort to vengeance and violence and the rule of the Wild West. Respect the law, which prevents suspects until proven guilty. Rajapaksa, be the gentleman that you claim to be. Good wishes.

    henry

  110. I voted for Mahinda. I can uderstand the dilemma created for MR with SF going public on war crimes(his last resort). But this is no way to arrest a man. The country which suffered a 30 year war does not have to pay for a private vendetta between SF and MR as the former wants the presidency at any cost. SF also must understand the agony he created for the innocent tamils in Colombo during the war with sudden requests for vacating their lodges etc. MR your days are numbered if your insecurity continues. This is a very bad move for you.

  111. I was on Mahindas side all this time, but this is such a disgusting thing he has done. Fonseka need respect, he is a hero. mahinda going to loose his supporters. he is stupid. I prasy he loose parliment elections

  112. j raj all srilankan are like him very much as a general sarath fonseka but he spoil his name joing in political general fonseka leave political and get respect from lion we will prey to god you will be reles soon

  113. I was a supporter of president rajapakse at the recent elections but after the chain if events and after reading your blog, I can no longer support a regime which chooses such brutal ways to suppress its opposition. May the triple gem bless the General and keep him safe.

  114. Do you want any more eveidence for war crimes convicted in Sri Lanka? See. if this happened to such a valuble person who sacrified every thing for the country, what will happen to common people who just cast their votes to these bloody politicians. Can you imagine how they might have treated inocient tamils.Crimes should be investigated and take actions against who did those. Otherwise these criminals will distroy your children too. Today it is against Tamils. Remember tomorrow it will be against you-sinhalese.

  115. when all allergations were made against the general all the UNP/JVP and SF said was if sf has done anything wrong go for legal proceedings not thorough press conferance..so this is exactly whats happend .why cry foul now..???if sf has not done anything to betray his motherland he would be free. we see a clear diffarance in two leaders one who would even betray your own country for power ,greed and hatred..and another who thinks as motherland first at whatever cost..

  116. Sad to see ICRC is called in.

How they were prevented from ferrying the wounded in May 2009 from North-East.

  117. Thanks DBSJ for the quick writeup. We understand this is a quick writeup before you come up with another detailed article on the motives behind this arrest.

Obvious reason is Gota shaken by Sarath’s threat of ‘i’ll expose all of you’.
Do you think Indian intelligence has anything to do with this?

  118. What we can expect from this regime in democratic manner?, How do these so called leaders boasting about war victory by treating their victorious commander like this.Do they have conscience? the lessons we learn from this incident is SL politicians are bunch of thieves who do not have credibility nor conscience

  119. We know that there were attrocities committed by both sides during the war – but, one side was representing a democratically elected government and its’ people, and that side (SLA) was lead by General Fonseka. Neverthelss, as human beings we must resist the temptation to say, feel or even think that what goes around should come around – the General should not be harmed in any way..

Certainly the general has questions to answer – but not the questions that the SL government want to pose at the moment.

Indeed, I shall be saddened if the general comes to any harm as it then becomes inevitable that we will be less able to get the answers to the questions that matter,

  120. SF is now tasting his own medicine. He too was arrogant when he was in power. However, I feel sorry for him as he is now beginning to do things in a democratic way.

Do not worry. Gotabaya will not dare to harm him because SF has already written all human rights violations by Gotabaya in a sworn affidavit and kept it in a safe location, probably with his daughters in USA. If any harm falls on him then it will be released and it carries legal testimony against Gotabaya in any international tribunal for his human rights violation.

Moreover, this arrest will have a negative effect on MR’s bid to win the Parliamentary election. UNP and JVP will have field day during their election campaign. All they need is little bit of crying by Anoma Fonseka on the election platform to swing the women’s votes to their favour.

  121. Well like to remind that the militery rule he violated while in position as the army commander having contact with a political party was told at a rally by Mangala, how he and Ranil met with Fonseka changing cars and stuff when he was the army comander as well as the Tri force comander. Other part of the Hi-corp every one knows. Well the other question what was he doing with Mano,Mangala, Rauff, Karu in his bedroom? this is from the news on the internet and what the people that was there with him. This is all staged? As sri-lankens lets be inteligent vs. just belive any thing opposition politicla party leader are sying just to get the sympathy for their own gain.

Rajapakse & co had done a lot to sri lanka in 4 yrs than any other political party or leader has done in 30 yrs. Key thing is Prsident has not let the forigen super powers to dictate what to do that has made every one mad and using the oppersition to distrup the development.
Have you being to the east coast to see for your self what has happened. well ? I am writing with the facts and seeing things rather than just beacuse some one got up in stage or did a press relese.

  122. Thank you DBSJ for the details on this matter.

Every action of MR and his brothers clearly tell the world that they are not clean! MR is doing the wrong things to hide his even actions that has taken place in the past.
There is no way he can get a way with this. He is got the WRONG advisor!!!

  123. kuku charlie look like a shoe polisher of MR family. The time is not too far you to get kick on your ass. Shame on you , remove your coloured glass and look for justice. I forgot how can we expect MR’s henchmen know about justice.

  124. Goona Yanne Kareththeka ( The Bull goes with the Cart )
What you have done in the past, now you have been paying for. Do good in life and in Return you will get the
good. So I will not pity on SF and may be MR may be right.

Still as a Civilised Nation would had Arrested him in a very
professional way since he was General and Opposition Leader. The world is focussing on us after defeated the LTTE. So dont give any opportunity for them to come and dominate our tiny island at any cost.

  125. MR proved that he didnt win the elections in the manner which he is talking about by arresting the opposition Candidate. This is realy dirty and disgusting the way our politicians behave. If they behave in this unruly manner what will the common folks do ? who should they consider as leaders ? Sri Lanka will be doomed very soon if the politicians behave like this.

  127. The retired General refused to be arrested and he was forcefully taken. Had he responded to the requests by the arresting officers he would not have had to be ‘dragged’ as some people claim. There must be sufficient evidence for his arrest. People were asking earlier, if he has done the things claimed, why doesn’t the govt arrest him. When that is done now some people here think it is ‘ridiculous’ , ‘disgusting’ etc. This mad man should be sent to Angoda.

  128. This is really disgusting. Fellow Sinhalese – please stop this pathetic hatred among ourselves – We singhalese watch and enjoy our own clan fighting, killing and mud slinging at each other and others add fuel to the fire. Have you ever seen any other minorities are doing this? No, they never did or will do – only singhalese people will do this type of third class things. Whether it is MR or SF they both are singhalese – remember that – we are trying to destroy our own people – we lost many good people and few are remaining we are destroying them also . Sinahala moda janayeni ninden nagitiyaw – ape minsun nathikaraganne nathiwa

  129. While I have been a huge fan of DBS, I would like to know on which chair was he seated in that secured room when all this took place, for him to describe this in detail and so colourfully? While I am no supporter of SF and I regret this incident even taking place, and blame Mongal, Ranil, Hakeem, Mano and JVP jokers/traitors for bringing this Hero to a lower level, I beg to ask these question from DBS and others.

What if the allegations were true? What if there were evidence of his wrong doings? What is the government to do? Not arrest him? After all he did challenge them to arrest him “if” they had any evidence, and now that they have, should he or we be surprised? So why protest and resist, if he is clean and innocent? Also did he not say he will arrest people when he got elected? Do you think his way of arresting MR, GR & Co. would have been any different? Having seen the undiplomatic ways and SF’s own choice of linguistics during his campaign I am sure DBS need to change some of the descriptions, from SF objecting his arrest to – “kalawadda, paaharaya, yaka, balla etc.” which would have been more believable.

Either way I agree this is a sad situation for the country. After a victory over terrorism we have found our self bickering against each other and badly divided. Wonder who is really behind all this and who benefits from bringing MR down and dragging SL through international tribunals? May be we need to worry more about them not about a retired General who made an ass of him self by betraying not only his country, but the men who served under him and some who paid with their lives.

    DBSJ RESPONDS:

When I write something you like then you accept what I say and even praise me. But when you dont like something then you start insulting me and ask inane questions like “Which chair were you seated on” etc

This type of stupidity recurs again and again and I am tired of answeriing it

No I dont have to sit in a ringside seat to know what was happening. It would be fine if that were possible but still that does not mean one can write about things one sees firsthand only

Do you think all news reports filed by journalists are all firsthand accounts?

No I dont need to be present physically to know what happened. I have and will continue to write about what happened as accurately and as interestingly as possible

I am glad that Editors in Sri Lanka accept what I write and continue to publish what I write about Sri Lanka from Canada in newspapers published in Colombo. That is the finest testimony to my journalism

By the way Seymour Hersh who exposed the My Lai massacre in Vietnam and won a Pulitzer prize was not seated in a chair observing the killings first hand. In fact he never went to the spot even afterwards. Hersh exposed the whole massacre without going to Vietnam while being in the USA whereas correspondents stationed in Vietnam missed the story

Another question. We see and hear spokespersons like Keheliya Rambukwella and Prasad Samarasinghe trotting out official versions of the arrest. On which chairs were they seated when the incident took place Siribiris?

No Siribiris I dont have to sit in a chair in Colombo. A chair in Toronto would do

    I

  130. it seems that RW & co has taken SF for a ride and now SF is paying the price. The biggest mistake SF did was contesting for the presidential elections. if not, he would be one of the most respected war heroes in SL history.
On the other hand, as an ex-military serviceman SF should protect the secrecy of the security matters. should he be arrested or should there be a war crime investigation is a different matter. but, SF should have mind his words & deeds, as a matter of national security.

Dear sister, please do pray to God for the protection of your beloved general and all his supporters who are arrested …. there’s nothing wrong as you are free to do that.
But please don’t mislead the unbelievers by saying that you pray to punish some one you don’t like…. no that’s not a prayer but a curse!! IThis is not the teaching of Jesus ‘Our Father forgive our sins as we forgive those who sin against us’

##17,#36#56#106# and ect who justify general’s arrest are real MR (mentally reatarded) only act with a brain stem.( God forgive me for making this ugly comment.)

It seems that with the people like you who have only two eyes which alway close we cant develop our Sri Lanka. You are talking like a idiot man………try to understand the hidden truth

  135. Ranjith from Australia..
Dr Mahinda Rajapakse , President, took rightful steps to safeguard the nation. Read below: Who in his right mind would not act? The news item said:

It was only a few hours earlier that Sarath Fonseka held a media briefing where he said that he was prepared to testify in any inquiry into alleged war crimes committed by Sri Lankan armed forces.

“I am definitely going to reveal what I know, what I was told and what I heard. Anyone who has committed war crimes should definitely be brought into the courts,” Gen Fonseka said at the briefing.

With this “arrest” any such possibility of Fonseka testifying has been ruled out in the near future.

  136. This is the most disgusting thing that probably happened since the murder of Lasantha.
I am a sinhalese and I am truly ashamed of what is going on back home, where are all you so called patriots who stand for the right?, politics is a dirty game but this is going to leave a scar on Sri Lanka for the rest of its exsistance.
Stand up all you cowards and fight for human rights!!!!

  137. Wow, I didn’t expect this to happen so early. I thought it would happen right after the general election. These guys are pretty good, sending couple of people to UN to defend war crimes, at the same time sending army police to arrest primary witness/support. I don’t know in details but I believe an officer charged/arrested for releasing the army secret can be detained without following any normal law and UN or any other countries cannot force SL to release SF as it would interfere in countries sovereignty.

  138. This is a “chicken has come to roost” moment for Sarath Fonseka. He has done the same thing to many number of innocent helpless people time and time again. Today he tasted the same medicine.

He is and only he is responsible for the fate he earned. When he was undermining everybody and claiming credit for the war victory for himself, after winning the war as a culmination of a nationlist effort of a decade he earned the wrath of those nationalistic forces. When he abandoned the very people who were with him in this endavour and stand with those who did every thing to undermine it he had his fate carved on the wall. He betrayed those who genuinly loved, adored and reverd him and now he has only political oppotunists like Rauff Hakeem, Mano Ganeshan & Mangal Samaraweera etc who wanted to use him as a mere tool to topple Rajapaksha administration. Infact not like politically naive Fonseka, these gentlemen knew that this was what was waiting for him at the end of the tunnel that they were dragging him into. But anyway they did it since they did not care a hoot about him.

What sane government on earth will sit and wait when somebody with whole lot of sensitive information threatens to spill it out and drag everybody in front of international tribunals? This is real terrorism in the part of Fonseka. Rajapaksha did not give in to Prabhakaran’s terrorism and he will never give in to Fonseka’s terrorism as well. Make no doubt about that.

  140. DBSJ, I never said I “liked’ everything you wrote.. only that I am a fan, regardless of your point of view matched mine or not (and still a fan). It was a simple question to find out how and where you got this information, when it is well known that no journalist was allowed, cameras confiscated etc. For that you had a rant trying to explain to me how you can write from Canada on what happens in Sri Lanka. True, I will give you that and you do a good job of it too!

Siribiris do you want me to reveal my sources to you? Also please differentiate between facts and rants………………..DBSJ

  141. Gen. Sarath Fonseka’s manner of arrest was of his own choosing.

It is not for him to dictate who is to arrest him; that is within the purview of the Government law enforcement authorities, military or civil.

He should know to comply immediately without resisting, if he wanted to be treated with respect. In the US, it is normal for authorities to immediately handcuff the person arrested. They routinely take all measures necessary, including bodily carrying the person, and restraining him with force, if necesary, during an arrest. It does not matter who that person is, once a legal order to arrest has been issued .. the subject must comply.

It is also a crime to resist arrest by law enforcement officers; that charge can and is usually levied against those who resist arrest.

Gen. Fonseka is no novice in these matters. As the former Army Chief, and later the Chief of Defense Forces, he was responsible for enforcing military justice. He should have known better than to resist.

Perhaps he was deluded by his inflated ego and vanity to believe himself to be above the Laws of the Land.

It is also curious that the former head of the Armed Forces had so little knowledge of Limitary Law that he was unaware that the Military System of Justice had Jurisdiction over him, until six months has elapsed after leaving the Service.

That is ENTIRELY consistent with his INATTENTION to REGISTERING TO VOTE in the Presidential election. What do we have here .. an Illiterate of monumental proportion?

This is a man who blinded by unbonded personal ambition, betrayed his brothers-in-arms, allied himself with the stooges of his formers enemies (TNA), and formers terrorists who inflicted violence on the people of Sri Lanka on two occasions (JVP) , and a man who was ready to partition and deliver Sri Lanka, bound hand-and-foot to its enemies.

He also formed a paramilitary group composed of Army deserters, knowing full well that harboring deserters is a crime in Sri Lanka. He should have known better .. after all he was Army Chief and the Chief of the Defence Forces. These transgressions do not begin to define the full scope of his violation of Civil and Military Laws.

Please do not abandon your senses to emotion and embrace this foolish, unprincipled man who is now REAPING the consequences of the seeds unbounded ambition and hate that he himself has SOWN!

  142. # 153 Raj Tharmasunderam,

The retired General did not refuse to be arrested. He repeatedly said to call the police and he will come over.

It is such a cowardly act for the Rajapaksa bros to act this way having won 17% margin over Fonseka. This only shows their insecurity about popular governance and their margin too becomes questionable.

Only Rajapkse govt has a record of forcefully taking away Tamils in white vans and evicting people out of their livelihood. There is enough evidence out there about Rajapakse corruption and more wrong doings are about to come.

Such powerful bros in power today, trying strangle media and opposition only shows their paranoid behaviour. . You are terribly wrong about who should be in Angoda.

  143. This is we are really good at as sinhalese.

    Then they came for the Journalists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a Journalist;

    Then they came for yesterday’s War Heros, and I did not speak out — because I was not a War Hero;

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak out for me.

  145. No more telecasting of “HITLER” or “Idi Ameen” by state media as it is happening right now in the country. Mahanayake Thero will soon become a terrorist in state media. LONG LIVE MY KING

  146. One thug takes down another.
Sarath was arrested because the government panicked after he made a statement about war crimes a few hours earlier. Sarath was clearly a racist, who was intolerant of nay sayers including his former boss the war hero Janaka Perera. He finally met his match in a bigger thug, Mahinda, who obviously has very thin skin and cannot take criticism.

  147. DBS,

This news item appears to have taken readers on emotional roller coaster.

The signs were there from the day one that SF is no goer for politics. He should know civil and military rules before embark upon spewing allegations that undermines the country and leadership.

The charges on grounds of treason are serious specially when he harboured ‘1500 deserters ‘and nothing to do with politics. He has stated a signed affidavit will be produced to war crimes tribunal if he get killed. He asked for it and he had it. Just to be fair MR may have to face the music after or within 6 yrs if he abuses power.

Democracy is not only freedom of speech it has no freedom from responsibility. Political parties must resolve matters on bipartisanship for national interest. RW will be severely punished in the coming election for his treacherous acts. I came to know when army surrounded the Cinnamon Lake hotel RW somehow escaped from the hotel and crawled to Indian embassy and phoned other foreign embassies to get the attention. How can such a coward lead a multicultural nation like S Lankans.

MR has no choice compared to SF’s actions. SF has to put up with results after the election or shut up as no time needed to be wasted on him whose space between ears has been wasted.

This also a lesson to those who in uniforms and abused those powers as the country was under emergency law for decades. It is high time to send a clear message that civil leadership that orders the military not the other way around.

  148. A reader commented that Fonseka has made an affidavit detailing the war crimes and it is in a safe place, to be opened in the case of his death. That was a smart move on his part, and probably saves his life for the moment.

  149. SL Govt tried its best to avoid such an event but Sarath Fonsekas goaded the govt with his uncouth behaviour and gave no other option but to charge him with unethical behaviour as the commander in chief of the army.

  150. This is sickening indeed. How is govt. behaved is shameful MR dont you worry this will come back on you. I supported you as agianst SF but I cant approve of what happened. YOu have to be gareful for the yeoman service the Ex Army chief did for the country. To give his this treatment thourgh officers whom he penelised for what ever reasons is the lowest thing one can do. I beleive Gotabhaya is responsible for this. I am sure that all the army officers and soldiers whether they like SF or not will hate you all for this. This is not the way to treat a National hero. What a shame . This was supposed to be the best Army Commander in the world whom you all sung praise of. Every one now doubts as to how MR claim to have won the elections. Surely if he can behave in such a lowly manner then he can go to any extent. This is a way of preventing SF from taking to politics.

  151. DBSJ

Today I am ashamed to be called as a Sri lankan because of your action, this is not how we treat each other especially our opponents. I am sad for the country and it’s citizens. It is clear that Sri lanka does not need a cruel leader like you, Rajapaksha. God save General Fonseka ! He is the real hero. May all of us find peace and happiness in our hearts.

My friend, you are a fine chap hollering from Australia. You can see what has happenned to people who even squeaked back, let alone fought back. Why don’t you comeback and rally the people.Unless there is direct external intervention like in Iraq or Afghnistan or military support like in Thailand, it will not happen here.repressive regimes are very difficult to get rid of, that is why before they have taken a stranglehold on the country you should nip things in the bud, when it all started. Now it is too late. The people had to allow more and more authoritarianism because they were focused on the LTTE, and rightfully so. In the meantime the cancer had spread too much.

The action Of Mahinda Rajapakse in demoralising his political opponent is unbecoming of a president who claims to have defeated him with a thumping majority in the recent presidential elections. These actions will boomerang definitely in the upcoming Parliamentary elections. It is for the joint opposition to agitate for the removal of the Elections commissioner who has proved himself as a puppet, unworthy of holding such a key position in conducting a democratic elections.

  163. I dony believe in an all powerful god or any other mini gods. But from time to time, there are events in SL that punishes those who have done many crimes, sometimes with good intentions. Hope the Rajapakse brothers are clever enough to understand that what goes around comes around.
Having said that…. majority of those who post comments and read this blog have very little idea of what is really happening. MR is a clever guy, much smarter than many of us. That is why he is where he is today. He will not take a lot of risks detaining SF, unless the return on investment was very high. It will be many years before the real reasons come out. SF was always a dangerous person. Just ask the many army hundreds who were killed or injured when they were asked to march forward at Muhamalai just to satisfy his ego.

  164. thank you, for informing us, how this traitor was arrested.

  168. DBSJ

    Thanks for the article.

You missed out something very important.

Who is this Major General Sumith Manawadu?

Major General Sumith Manawadu was the officer in charge of Mullaitivu during the Eelam War IV and he was transferred to the Army headquarters in Colombo by then Army Chief General Sarath Fonseka as punishment for issuing unskilful and incorrect orders to the ground troops, which resulted in the death of 117 soldiers in combat. The Major General has since been angry with the General ever since.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa knew of this rift and used Major General Manawadu for several operations against General Fonseka. It was Major General Manawadu who also played the role of Commanding Officer in “Operation Trans Asia.”

  169. High time all Sri Lankan forget about their caste religion and language and think of the country only.
When are we going to be like singapore and malaysi. If ASEAN countries can prosper why not SAARC.
all countries who talk abt the religion and language will be doomed.

  170. What goes around comes around. SF did not give a damn about the gross human and civil right violations that went around him for years. He must have then thought they were justifiable for a “just” course (eliminate terrorism). But history has shown that nations that embarked on doing wrong things for “right” reasons ended up in misery.

Lankans, it is time to wake up and take a look at the route causes of our problems. Stop just looking at the surface. Various despots who came in to power have fooled you for decades. The told us that our problems were created by western powers or by separatist terrorists etc. So, many large and small nations in our neighbourhood that were way behind us in economic terms 50 yrs ago were able to leap frog ahead of us. Open your eyes and take a good look around to see what’s really going on. We should ask those who try to hood wink us with this nonsense, why these so called powers have allowed these other nations around us to prosper.

MR’s agenda is clearly building a family dynasty at the expense of nation building. He is after absolute dictatorial power and won’t tolerate any dissent. His actions are certainly going to wreck this golden opportunity to unite the country and go forward. Please exercise your rights wisely in the next general election. This will be your only chance (for a very long time) to stop this country from sliding down the slippery slope to dictatorship, endemic corruption and more misery. I do understand your dilemma – absence of a credible alternative!
    All the best.

  171. Fantastic piece of journalism.Tamil journalists should study the way DBS upholds the ethics of journalism.I know how DBS exposed the true nature of LTTE and told the reading public that LTTE was really a terrorist outfit.
I fully agree with RFF’s comment.I am behind MR policy and support him.According to the narration of DBS the manhandling of SF is hurting me.
SF was rejected by the people. But his utterences about war crimes are very bad.It has to be dealt.MR government should take care to show that this is not a victimization.

  172. Hi Folks, Let’s not kill the messenger – but look at the message.
DBSJ, good reporting and acccuracy validated and consistent with all other reports on the incident reported by worldwide media.

The take home message from this incident – deeply worrisome deterioration of basic human rights in SL. In 60 years since gaining independence – we are still not free!!.

SF or that matter any individual must have the freedom to speak what is on his/her mind. An inalienable right of a citizen of any country.

Seems like the bright sparks in the SL administration have put the cart before the horse. Arrest first and scratching their heads to determine what charges can be brought against SF.

SF is no angel – but even a devil must have his day in court.

So the tears we shed today is not for the incarceration of SF – but for the gagging, blindfolding, handcuffing of the entire SL population by a ruthless regime hell bent on staying in power at any cost for deades to come.

  173. Arrest of Fonseka reminds me the saga of once powerful deputy leader of LTTE Mahattaya. Prabakaran considered Mahattaya as a challenger and executed for treason. While Mahattaya was imprisoned he was chained to the prison cell. When Mahattaya was executed so called Tamil intelligentsia had never raised their voices. However since the arrest of SF Tamil intelligence are raising their voices against GOSL..

  174. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I have no love for SF, MR, GR, BR etc.

All are state terrorists. But SF is a human life violator in his own way. He has killed many Tamils who were captured, I mean extra judicial killings. There is also a lurking feeling that he was behind the Lasantha’s killing.

They were partners in crime and it is unfair for a partner to threaten the others over the crimes.

Even the cheats should not cheat one another. Here he did just that.

There are other ways for MR to contain him. Or he could have arrested at odd hours avoiding this high drama.

I feel that the MR is squandering his mandate. He is letting go slip this historic opportunity to unify his country.

By this high handed behavior does MR believe he can silence the opposition.

Even if he silences the opposition the international community will be forced to take action against him in the human rights abuses against the Tamils.

If the Sinhalese could do this to one of their kind, that too a war hero then I wonder what they will not do to Tamil boys and girls who are captured by the state apparatus.

  175. Hi Fellow readers,
Yesterday I wrote here and said ” OUR COUNTRY IS MORALLY BANKRUPT” and I blamed the religious leaders for not doing anything about it.
Today I saw a video clip in “INFOLANKA.COM”, of the MAHANAYA OF THE MALWATHA CHAPTER speaking out and even telling the corrupt Political leaders of SL NOT TO COME TO HIS TEMPLE. He said very sadly, although the ruling politicos come to his temple and listen to his sermon they do not do what he asks them to do. He condemed the arrest of SF and he spoke against harresment in general against the general public purely they voted against MR.
WELL DONE VENARABLE MAHANAYAKA. I HOPE YOU CAN BE A EXAMPLE FOR OTHER RELIGIOUS LEADERS.
I WANT THE NORTHERN BISHOPS WHO WERE LICKING THE LTTE LEADERS BOOTS COME OUT AND OPENLY CONDEM THE LTTE. THEY MUST MAKE SURE NO OTHER MAD MAN OR MEGLOMENIAC START ANOTHER AGITATION . THEY MUST CONDEM KARUNA , PILLIYAN AND DOUGLAS. THESE GOONS ARE TRYING TO CRATE A FEAR SYCOSIS AMONG THE TAMIL POPULATION AND TRYING TO MILK THE NORTHERN TAMILS FOR MONEY AND PROPERTY.
BISHOP SAUNDRA !! BISHOP RAYPOO!! START PREACHING TO YOUR FLOCK TO LIVE IN PEACE WITH THE SOUTHERN BROTHERN!! AND TEACH YOUR FLOCK TO REJECT THE GOONS SUCH AS KARUNA, DOUGLAS AND PILLAYAN!!!
I TELL THE NORTHERN BISHOPS TO TAKE A LESSON FROM THE MAHANAYAKA OF THE MALWATHA CHAPTER!! HOW TO BE OPEN AND TRUTHFUL RATHER THAN START LICKING SOME NEW MEGLOMENAC’S BOOTS!!

  176. Opposition parties speaks lot about the election and the present episode of arrest. They say this is very undemocratic.SF says he is the president and MR manipulated the election and became president.it is the joke of the decade.
I am posing a question to many pundits. When JR politically victimised madame Sirimao,Honest politician Felixs and secretary to Ministry of Justice thro the presidential commision,no body opened their mouth other than TULF.TULF made an excellent speech in the parliament.Though I believe TULF(M.Siva,Amir) was responsible for the plight of the Tamils and the violent politics,I respect them for their stand on srimao’s civic right issue.

  177. time has come for this raja karumakarayata to leave the office., this playboy is sleeping with our film stars and screwing them left and right.. this paraya lifted our exchange rules just before the election in order to smuggle 5000million from our tresure leavimg our economy bavkrupt, soon after they have taken the money out of the country exchange rules were placed again to stop any one taking money out of rhe country.

  178. May the ignorance of the government and people of sri lanka, be disolved by the blessings of the Noble triple Gem –

Blaming one another is an unproductive action. There is no point crying over spilt milk.

Let us all have compassion for all those invloved, SF, GR, MR, KARUNA and all beings living in SRI LANKA.

Throwing insults at one another will not resolve this problem. Let us all take time to send our wonderful sinhalese and tamil brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka blessings and caring and assurance that all will be well and happy….

May you all be well and happy and free of anger, hatred and greed!!!

With this blessing may there be peace, love joy and contentment in all beings , especially in Sri Lanka.

Change only happens within and if we all look within and understand that everything is arising and passing in nature there is no necessity for anyone to live in fear or anxiety. All things arises and falls, due to its impermanent nature…

May all beings be peaceful within…

  179. # 168. Max

TNA leaders may take cue from Karuna & Pillayan.

By supporting MR, and arming yourself with political power, you may achieve your aims of Tamil freedom & power sharing in North & East. No Sinhalese opposition could stop you from reaching your goals.

  180. In fact I was against SF too but, I am not a voter at this election. Please look at country like USA , UK , people never do dirty politics. I know SF is victimised by UNP to mercy votes. Government too fooled by this act.
If government wanted to covict him for such charges why SF assigned such a responsible task all the way to victory.
I am sure this country is engulfed by evils that the blood shed from every innocent man punish for those who justify evil against good.
I still can remember how politician assign task to kill innocent people during the JVP era.
God should curse this evil politician who drag the war
for many years without taking corrective action and want to celebrate this victory over 70000 dead innocent bodies.
God showed the world how sunami governed by god to punish evils.
It is very clear the path is demanising minoraties who claims original citizen of this country.

  181. You have to hide your face in this country to make democratic comments….. Hail Hitler or should I say Hail King MR!!

  182. I voted for Mahinda. I regret voting for mahinda. Now I believe that Mahinda lost the election and Fonseka Won the election. Mahinda and bros robbed our rights. I feel a shamed to be a Sri Lankan. Am I so dumb? Mahinda had robbbed the election and now i belive they kidnapped the election commisioner on election day. Anaway I will support Sarath Fonseka in the future. I wished i had the intelligence to understand what he was telling. Now we have ELECTED A DICTATOR to rule our loved country. I AM SO SAD NOW.

  183. FONSAKE DESERVE THIS,,TIPICALLY DIRTY SINHALAYA DO THESE THINGS ALSO ( STABBING BACK ) FONSAKE SHOULD NOT BITE THE HAND THAT FEED HIM DON’T YOU SEE HOW ARROGANT IS HE??? # 208. MURUGA
Fonseka killed our TAMIL brothers, sisters, daughters, sons when he was in the army. Srilanka government should shoot him now
    ——————————————————-

Well, both Tamils and sinhalese alike hate SF and support the military action against SF. .

MR being a people’s leader united both races and made people happier in this case.

  185. DBS,

I think this was almost inevitable. SF who does appear to speak first before he thinks challenged the government to arrest him. MR who does not back down from challenges, did not blink.

What is so ironic is that SF had Mahinda to insulate him from the pressures put on him by the external organizations during the war and MR and GR had to take a lot of heat for defending him. Now SF is crying and appealing to the same countries and organizations that he dismissed once to come and save his skin.

What is important is how will the general public react in the coming days? Will the opposition muster enough support for a civil disobedience campaign? I sense that UNP is trying to walk away from SF while trying to give the impression that they are outraged and is supporting the general. What is more interesting to see is what the JVP is going to do. SF was their horse all along and in the parliamentary elections, their only hope.

If you look at the web and the comments by the Sri Lankans on the web, they are running 90% in support of SF. However, the views expressed on the web is not a representative picture of the thinking in the country. In Sri Lanka, easy access to the web is available only to a very select group of wealthy people.

DBS, you still have not expressed any opinions about this ‘attempted coup” on the election day by SF and his merry men. Do you think there was anything more than a clumsy attempt by the government to drag SF through the mud?

  186. It’s a shame what Rajaphaksa had done.. He’s gutless fillthy women.. ( i dont think He can be considered as a man any more,) I strongly belive SF’s the present day equlent to puran appu, Migara mahasenevi, and Few others who led us to victory.. He’s the Best Army commander world has ever seen. MR just jelous of it,, Prabakaran Wasn’t affraid of MR at all. But He $#@% on his pants pants every time he heard tha name of SF.. Long Live our Puran appu.. Sir we will be with you for ever.,Hail Democracy

  187. DBSJ, just wanted to ask you something:
Do you think the title “Gen. Fonseka was forcibly dragged away from his office” is rather inaccurate as it gives the impression he was kidnapped or something?

Wouldnt it be more accurate to report “Gen. Fonseka was arrested by the military police at his office”?.

The ‘forcibly dragging’ part has happened only after he resisted arrest right?

Now I know you are going to give me an earful. But I always like to challenge journalists when they try to sensationalise situations and only you actually take time to respond. 🙂

No TCK, I have no time to humour you. SF was forcibly dragged away from his office.Period………….DBSJ

  189. Racism, chauvinism, jingoism, nepotism………, now maturing fascism.
I am talking about the evolution of the Srilankan society, since 1948. We worked hard for this and we got it.
India and Australia really have to worry about 21 million potential boat people, graduating from a few million.
If there is chance to get out of this pathetic situation, try to learn history as history, educate ourself and learn and respect the rights of the most vulnerable among us.
Otherwise, what goes around come around.

  190. ancient sinhala kings lost their kingdom along with the tamil Jaffna kingdom because of treacherous behavior of the low country sinhalese and the tamils history is repeating itself in srlana PORTUGUESE took over the entire coastal areas in1505.Kandyan Kingdom similarly fell under the British rule.Today
the country is weak both politically and economically ripe for
foreign intervention.Colonialism is dead how neocoloniailism.srilanka may be independent and sovereign in but will become vassal state of india because of close proximity.

  191. Gen. Sarath Fonseka may have been ruthless in carrying out the war against LTTE and a lot of innocent Tamils perished too.

But my well wishes are with the General and family. I hope Mahinda Rajapakse will act accordance with democracy and uphold humanrights of all Sri Lankans.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
    Martin Luther King Jr., (1929 – 1968) – Letter from Birmingham Jail, April16, 1963

  192. This is the truth MR!

“Feb 10 (DM) An overwhelming majority of people who voted for Mahinda Rajapaksa at the January 26 polls did not want General Sarath Fonseka to be arrested. The thinking was Ok he has been acting stupid during the last two months but he is the man who led the Sri Lanka Army in the security forces epic victory over the LTTE. Since the General was not seen as presidential material they decided to side with the incumbent President.

The same way if Sarath Fonseka was elected the majority of the Swan supporters would not have tolerated any move to send President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Bogambara. After all here is the president under whose regime we won the war. Forget about nepotism and other charges he should be treated with some respect they would have thought. Ours is a civilized nation”.

  193. 08th of February will go as a shameful day for Sri Lanka. We cannot treat a person like Sarth Foneska in this way. While terrorists like Karuna, KP , George Master are all free, Sarath Fonseka has become the terrorist.
I am a bigger idiot. I voted for Mahind Rajapakse on 26th Jan not to do things like this. I am no fan of Sarath Fonseka. But we have to give him due respect. Lets hang our heads in shame. Never again ever vote for any Rajapakse. They are evil. I learnt it too late.

  194. This is a disgraceful state of affairs. I, like so many millions of Sri Lankans, supported the President in the run up to the election, and were pleased to see him win so convincingly. We felt this could be a ‘turning point’, where he could use this mandate to get rid of the despicable clowns in his midst – like Mervin and SB- and get the country on a road to recovery.
Not so anymore I’m afraid. Like all those millions I mentioned before, I am disgusted by the way General Fonseka has been treated by these ‘goons’ who call themselves Officers in our Armed Forces. They have totally disgraced and made a mockery of a revered and honoured Service, and the likes of that Manawaduge deserve to be court-martialled for the high-handed and disrespectful manner in which he has dared behave to not only his Commanding Officer, but even as a civilian, someone much senior and superior to him. He has lowered the entire standard of what we picture and expect our future Army Officers to be like. He seems to be typical of what we had come to expect of our crooked
‘tinpot’ goons that Mervin and SB exemplified. I can only hope for the sake of our Country’s future, that the President and his people will be able to disclaim any connection whatsoever, to all these stupid actions, and even at this stage, deal with the General in a manner more suited to his rank and status.

  195. Ha Ha Ha

    Ha Ha Ha

Sarath should be glad that he is still alive… as this is the first time the Army he had commanded has taken a priosoner in…

The is the same Army who killed thousands on innocent Tamil and Sinhala civilians…

Looking at the Army track record, Sarath F would be tortured and killed like Rohana W and Velu P

God-Kadavul has his own ways of cleaning up his affairs…

Look at the people who were rejoicing with fire crackers and kiribath some time ago. They are now killing each other in the streets of colombo….

What goes around – Comes around….

  196. This is a disgraceful state of affairs. I, like so many millions of Sri Lankans, supported the President in the run up to the election, and was genuinely pleased to see him win so convincingly. We felt this could be a ‘turning point’, where he could use this mandate to get rid of the despicable clowns in his midst – like Mervin and SB- and get the country on a road to recovery.

  197. I think #236 Ranjan has summed it up best. His analysis of the internet driven propaganda that backed 90% the SF’s campaign during the election, is dead on. A certain sect of the Colombo with such access to internet, SMS as well as the diaspora, were dreaming of SF’s victory, which they “believed” was a done deal. Hence their disbelief and accusation of election rigging (yeah 1.8 million of them). I too felt this while on the ground in Colombo. But the reality was that the common people didn’t care of SF and his cohort’s antics. They didn’t care the cost of living was up. They even didn’t care about corruption (after all every government since independence is guilty of this, and it’s part and parcel of SL politics). What they cared was that the war was over. Their kids in the army fighting the war (certainly not the sons and daughters of so called Colombo elite’s or diaspora’s) were not coming home without limbs, or in body bags. They were not scared of not knowing about their own safety, of returning home without getting in the way of a bomb. They realized that MR was the president “behind” the many men, war heros who led them to victory. For this they paid gratitude to MR.

Now granted, MR nor his brothers are perfect and the timing of this arrest looks bad on MR. It is a bad political move as even MR supporters points out. But then again MR is not known for worrying about political fallouts, now is he? Everything he did from 2005 has been scrutinized due to this. From the 100 odd ministers (to keep the government together) to his moves in Government Appointments during the war has been done for a reason, and one reason only. To win the war and defeat LTTE. About 2-3 years ago, even yours truly didn’t believe he was going to finish the war. After all war was a profit and has been the biggest corruption for the past 30 years (brings another point as to why if MR is so corrupt as his opponents point out, he would put and end to such a profitable cash cow like the war machine?). I think this current situation too a move to save the decision makers in the security forces from international humiliation. If you think SF as a war hero is treated badly, well then just imagine what the WHRC, EU, US were planning on, for a whole heap of other war heros of Sri Lanka (I am sure all of you did see the chart displayed on tamilnet, the one that they later removed SF’s name from… right?).

Regardless of whether you believed the war was won fairly or not (now there’s an oxymoron for you), you have to agree that SF had betrayed his own army, his officers, and soldiers who fought under him, lost their lives… by dragging a white flag issue to the forefront. For what? To get votes, just like when he used his own scars/wounds from a suicide bomb attack, in the media during the election propaganda. It works on most gullible Sri Lankans, who believe everything the opposition throw at them. They have no idea that even that attempt on his life by LTTE was done using one of his own weaknesses for the fairer sex (many Manikas, abbots). How else would anyone explain a female having that kind of a direct access pass to the Army headquarters, when even the regular soldier’s lunch was subjected to thorough search? No one questions these from him. They believe that he alone won the war, and is the only war hero in the country. Why? Because he said so.

But he was a war hero to me as well, and he would have stayed a war hero had he not betrayed his own people (by his people I am not even referring MR, GR & Co., but the army!) How some of you can still call him a war hero after that, is beyond me. Anyone who thinks SL treats it’s war hero like this needs to examine their heads and realize that he stopped being one, when he betrayed his men! He didn’t stop at that either. Went on harping about, challenging the government to arrest him if they had evidence… guess what, looks like they have enough evidence! If not as he per his own imagination the government could have easily “assassinated” him, take him in a white van etc.. None of this happened did they? In fact by arresting him the government has eliminated his false accusation of trying to bump him off. So why anyone of us should be surprised by the arrest? What we should be surprised is of SF’s constant whining to the international media to save him and his conduct by refusing arrest. A gallant, brave and innocent soldier would have walked out head held high, knowing he is not guilty, just like a “madduma bandara” of yesteryear. Then may be we could still think of him as a hero, rather than a traitor.

Yet, I believe this whole saga looks bad on Sri Lanka, no matter what. I think many parties are to be blamed for this fiasco, since the end of the war. No one was right, but that doesn’t mean SF was correct either! SF was a pawn used by many others to get what they wanted… and he is still being used as a political martyr by some, both local and foreign. As I mentioned in my original post, these are the people as patriotic Sri Lankans, we should worry about and be vigilant!

  198. It is correct that SF was arrested – he will be given a fair trial according to the laws of the country, and international law. It is correct that the country uses every method, including keeping its decisions away from hostile and biased press, to protect its national sovereignty and its nations borders.

SF violated the military code of conduct during his tenure as the Army Commander. Even though a civilian at present, he surrounded himself with ample numbers of army, and army deserters. That itself gives rise to grievous concerns about the risk of a coup.

There is ample evidence that the life of our national leader is at stake. More importantly is the life of our national leader that needs to be preserved.

It is correct for the government to remove from its parliament a challenger too hostile for the integrity of the country’s political system and the county’s one and only chance of an optimistic future. This might not follow the policies and politics of the more affluent West, but this is the one and only way that Sri Lanka has a chance to be fair and just to the majority of her persons of all races –something which has evaded her for over three decades.

It is a national disgrace that one of our countrymen has to covert with forces intent on destroying Sri Lanka’s national identity. It is a national disgrace that SFk rejected legitimate polling results and stirred up chaos and controversy in the country. It is a national disgrace that he showed little dignity while being arrested.

  199. Mr.#233.CANADIAN SINHALAYA ( KING OF KINGS).
In your opinion, MR Brothers Pvt.Ltd is the best bet for Sri Lanka. Please look at yourself. You are living in Canada, and eating tax payers’ money and bitching about WHITE SUPREMACY. It’s not fair.
Tamils fled the country because you SINHALAYAS, supported your successive Governments to destroy the TAMILS and their homeland. Only in sri Lanka killing without a trace is possible.

  200. I will pray not to borne as Rajapaksha in future. What a shame to our nation, specially to Sinhalese. Who ever dicided General’s arrest and who did his arrest, not born to our sinhalese mothers, even to human. They are lower than animals. The small idiot who punched General’s head from back, he has drunk dog’s milk, not even that. You all sold we Sinhalese for nothing.

  201. MR has just laid the foundation for a military coup ,which SF himself couldn’t have done better.Whether they voted for MR or NOT, even the current TOP military brass is now very much disenfranchised with the Rajapaksa regime. The very coup MR and Gotha dreaded,is just about to begin in earnest (ironically without the help of SF).I will not be surprised if MR is taken out by one of the military in his inner circle.

    Beware the Ides of March!!!!!!!!!!!

MR can only say. “the fault my dear Gotha,is not in our stars, but in ourselves”.

    Long live MR!!!!!!!!!

  202. We stayed silent for decades, when basic human rights were denied for many of our citizens, especially the minorities! We complained and made the US and Europe the villains, when they wanted accountability. We were quick to align with Burma, Iran, and China!

Now, it just might be too late to complain!

TNA leaders may take cue from Karuna & Pillayan.

By supporting MR, and arming yourself with political power, you may achieve your aims of Tamil freedom & power sharing in North & East. No Sinhalese opposition could stop you from reaching your goals.”

Well, you have said it. “achieve your aims” . – It must be their own personal aims like security from militant Tamils or finacial / other gains. Because Pillayan has publically made statements that he or his govt has no real powers to do anything. (all controlled and directed by Basil Rajapaksa). – Karuna is even in much worse situation, cannot even complain he has no powers.

  204. . . .at least there was no ‘white van’ involved in this pathetic saga, and the General’s family knows where he is. The General is a lucky man!

  205. Anoma Akke

Its So Sad To see you crying on Media for your husband. .. Do you have any idea how many Tamil Widows Your better half have created ? Would they Get a chance to cry in the media?

  206. Great article. As much as I feel sorry for this guy (aka: war hero, traitor, racist pig), I will never forget his words : “Sri Lanka is for the singhalese”. And I shall never forget the amount of innocent tamils he killed.

The sad fact is that most singhalese (majority non english speaking) do believe that they are the rightful owners of ‘Sri Lanka’, and that the tamils just arrived on a boat a few years ago. This is further affirmed to the ‘modayas’ by both SF and MR many times.

MR maybe wrong in jailing SF, however, I would rather him(MR) be in power rather than this idiot who has a more evil sinhala terrorist camp behind him. The JVP, the ‘the monks’ etc.

We have two evils. I do think the lessor Evil won the election. However, they are going to now shoot each other down.

Both these ‘banana’ or ‘monkey’ parties are going to kill each other and make Sri Lanka known not only for the child prostitution rings but also our glorious war crimes!

The LTTE may have lost the battle… but looks like they may win the war that they were set out to win – Equal rights for Tamils.

  207. #253 veediyabandara

    You are absolutely correct.
It will complete the politicization of the military started a few decades ago.

  208. this happnings were predicted before 1983 riotes by Kuddymani Thangathurai during the trial he predicted that first the Srilakan state will opress the Tamils and once completed they will turn theiir Guns towards Sinhalees now it has began. now it is a mater of time the rest of the Sinhala civilians to get their taste.

  209. Re: Betrayal of the Country.

This is to address the retards and morons that keep claiming that Fonseka’s willingness to speak the truth on war-crimes amounts to betraying the country. The claim is so prepostrous that one has to truly marvel at the depths to which Sri-Lanka has sunk to, not to mention the patriotness of the self-proclaimed “true patriots” and “true Sri-Lankans”.

To start out, let’s first examine what a Sri-Lankan is at the present time of my writing this. Sri-Lanka is a country defined by the borders of the mass of land on the Indian Ocean that forms an island. Its people are called Sri-Lankans and are bound by laws that spring forth from the Sri-Lankan constitution. Those are not the only laws that the country is bound by. The country is also bound by international laws that Sri-Lanka has signed up to including conventions such as those of Geneva. Now, not all people living in Sri-Lanka or abroad agree on what defines the “nation” of Sri-Lanka, but be that as it may, with regards to international recognition, this is how the country of Sri-Lanka is defined today.

War-crimes are against not only international laws and conventions, but also against the laws of Sri-Lanka and its constitution. If the armed forces or the ruling regime have committed war-crimes, **they have gone against the laws of Sri-Lanka**. If lies are being perpetrated with regards to war-crimes, this is **against the laws of Sri-Lanka**. Claiming that the war-crimes are “State secrets” does not make it any better or lawful.

If Fonseka is willing to tell the Truth about what happened with regards to the war-crimes, he is upholding the laws of Sri-Lanka and the Sri-Lankan constitution and is therefore more of a Sri-Lankan than the retards and morons who are claiming “betrayal” of the country. If war-crimes were indeed committed by the ruling regime and the armed forces then Fonseka is surely betraying the ruling regime and the armed forces, but **he is not betraying Sri-Lanka**. It is the ruling regime and the armed forces that have betrayed Sri-Lanka if they committed war-crimes.

The retards and morons should stop confusing betrayal of the country with betrayal of the ruling regime. These two are two different things. To take an example, the Nazis were the ruling regime in Germany and had many state-secret war-crimes and atrocities that were against German laws. Any German who spoke the truth about them was surely betraying the Nazis, but not Germany! It was the Nazis who betrayed Germany. That is why today, those Germans who are hailed as heros who went against Hitler were considered “traitors” and “betrayers” during Nazi rule.

Now, just to set the record straight, I am no admirer of Fonseka, and don’t think I am now an ardent Fonseka follower because of the turn of events. I am open about my views – I believe the current ruling regime is a dictatorial, draconian, pea-brained criminal gang, and that this regime committed atrocious war-crimes. I believe Fonseka was part of this gang too. But I am all for the Truth, whatever it may be and whoever it comes from, whether Fonseka, Mahinda, or Barney the Dinosaur. And if the Truth is going to come out of Fonseka’s mouth, I will make sure my actions and support will be directed towards getting this truth out.

Those trying to bury the truth and keep it a state-secret need to learn some history. The Truth always comes out, even if it takes a 1000 years. Interestingly enough, many of those trying to bury the truth are ardent Sinhalese Buddhist nationalists. These people need to learn some basic Buddhism, especially the theory of karma. One has to wonder if they teach this basic theory to the nut-job monks who lie, deceive, and act like political animals on a daily basis. Buddhism and politics don’t mix. That’s why the Buddha renounced his throne and never wanted it back. “State-secret war-crimes” and Buddhism don’t mix either.

The current turn of events with regards to the arrest of Fonseka will only strenghten the already strong belief that war-crimes were indeed committed.

  210. This a way much better than what SF was planning to do to MR ,if he came to power. It looks like SF wanted this drama anyway, to get sympathy from people. I don’t think he will get any sympathy from people though. The majority of the people who voted him voted him NOT because they like him, but because they wanted MR out. They are NOT going to weep for him.

  211. I totally agree with MR on this issue. SF will have to pay for his attrocities he committed during the war with LTTE. I hope he is tried and sent for life.

  212. #266 – Randy:

“I totally agree with MR on this issue. SF will have to pay for his attrocities he committed during the war with LTTE. I hope he is tried and sent for life.”

So you believe that atrocities were committed by the “Army Commander”? If that is the case, then his direct report – the “Commander-In-Chief” is also responsible for those atrocities. See, just like Fonseka didn’t drop the bombs with his own hands, atrocities committed by underlings will be held against the superiors if they had knowledge of the atrocities.
And I agree with you, both should be tried and given the death sentence.
Just for your own information, guess who the “Commander-in-Chief” was? No brownie points for guessing though.

  213. # 243 NoEalamInSL,

Now you know the result of applauding a “war” by Sri Lanka that the ” NoEalamInSL” brigade carried on without no regard for Humanitarian and international laws.

The clear outcome of “NoDemocracyInSL” is here to stay…not for too long I hope.

  214. #264 & #267,Rajah,

you raise very valid points but what you forget is, except in cases of wanton killings and destruction, most people in a country wouldn’t want any trial or punishment for leaders/commanders of security forces engaging in armed action against insurgency. This is true of most citizens of the West too. You talk of unearthing truth mainly because you happen to be related to the affected masses in this case. But the majority on the other side would be happy to let the truth remain buried for the foreseeable future as they perceive it to be largely collateral and wanton/excessive only in a few cases. This is the mentality of all those people in this world that support armed action by the state against insurgency. Look at what’s happening in Afghanistan. The western public aren’t too enthusiastic in prosecuting the NATO army personnel for civilian killings except in cases where they perceive that the ground troops engaged in unprovoked killings. But ask any Afghan national, he would say all those involved in all civilian killings should be punished. This is just a case of which side of the line you are on. In the case of SF, he should have known better to keep his mouth shut considering the positions he had occupied in the past, but unfortunately, he let his anger got the better of him and said stuff he shouldn’t have said at this juncture. It’s a matter of saying something at an inappropriate moment. At a time when many international agencies are looking into war crimes allegations in SL, the person that was part of these operations saying something that lends credence to these allegations would never be perceived as appropriate by many in the country. The SL tamils may want the truth to come out wrt the war crimes but majority of the sinhalese are not interested. This is the hard reality. It’s bitter but it’s like that everywhere.

  215. in Saoth America, Asia, Africa and Middle East The number of Dectator Regime is Increasing Srl Lanka is the new addition to this list.

  216. 264. Rajah:

Majority of people in this country have already decided that neither MR nor GR nor SF nor any of the soldiers who spearheaded the war effort against LTTE are war criminals.

It doesn’t matter what international law or uncle Sam or guardian.co.uk or Mr. Bob may think, Sinhalese are 75% majority of this country and there is no way in hell that you diaspora Tamils <5% of the population are going to go against their wishes and prosecute someone for war crimes.

    Please learn to accept that.

After all you and I both know that it is not out of your bleeding heart for those helpless civilians who died that you are breathing hot air all over the web like this but out of your lost pride since LTTE is no more and Eelam project has suffered a fatal blow.

  217. 243 NOEalamInSL

    ” Ours is a civilized nation ”.

    Really !!!???

In civilized countries arrests are not made in the manner the General was arrested in SL.

A soldier delivering a powerful punch to the back of Sarath Fonseka’s head while the National hero was being forcibly dragged away from his office is certainly not indicative of a civilized nation.

Did you read # 119 Fran ? There was some reference to pigs, songs and annoyance.

  218. Another great investigative journalism by DBS.After all the blackouts in Colombo media due to films/camara’s were forcibly taken over by army your news is the first real truth of the incident. Govt will know that the truth will be come out in Sunday Leader and Tamil Week very soon.
Its a real shame t the govt. i

  219. Aplogies for the interuption on my previous one due to an error.

Its a real shame to the govt. If they are genuine then should release the general and answer all the allegation in a democratical way.

  220. 246. Naan Kadavul:- You seem to be taking as a joke every one killing the other in SL. How come there are many Tamils living with Sinhalese peacefully in SL and vice versa? Because there is no difference between them. The problem is the Sinhala and Tamil leaders who drum up their rhetoric in communal lines to keep them in power. VP, MR, GR, are all murderers. However SF had a job to do in SLA. MR may kill SF just like VP killed mahattaya and tried to kill karuna. Many Tamils laugh at the current situation but they have the same in their own camp. If Tamil’s were in a majority in SL, do you think they would have treated the Sinhalese better? Not so because we are all human. Therefore I have stopped thinking in terms of Sinhalese and Tamils. If you closely associate with a wide range of people of different races, you will quickly find there are only 2 distinctions. The good and the bad guys and they come in all races!! And so do the murderers & peace makers. Don George

  221. Re: Betrayal of the Country.

It’s sad that some retards and morons think SF was going to tell the “truth” to the world and international tribune, about war crimes. If he was for truth and a officer with such a moral high ground, then he could have easily done that while he came to renew his green card, when the US authorities wanted to contact him. Why did he not do it then? It was because he had nothing to say. GET IT??? Whatever he has to say now, are concocted by other traitors like Mongal, Mano and he is using it to scare Sri Lankans for his advantage. Well.. I don’t need to tell you what happens to the guy who cried wolf too many times, do I?

It’s sad that people who stand for this truth and all that great ideological mumbo jumbo, forget that SF is a 2 tongued liar who will throw his mother under the bus to achieve what he wants. Truth is fine and dandy, if told by a honest person, not by a man who beats his wife, cut people’s ears, rape his servants and impregnate them and so on… SF who praised and gave credit to MR and GR after the war, while he was the Army Chief, did a 360 degree turn when he wanted to become the President. Nice going, isn’t it… So much for the “truth”, more like CONVENIENT TRUTH!

If that’s what you call truth, then god really needs to protect Sri Lanka from traitors like SF and even more from morons who believe this traitor stood for truth! All of us are for the truth, not just one person and if anyone wants to push a war crime agenda, lets start with the British, your Colonial masters, to Vietnam war and the current Iraq war and see how far these “I am all for the truth” campaigns lasts…

By the way this has nothing to do with Sinhalese buddhist nationalism, but everything to do with being a Sri Lankan… So please leave it alone or it may just expose the real motives behind such posts and may prove my previous point… about the puppet masters hiding behind traitors and convenient truths to discredit the country!

  222. Hi DBS
Your report on the arrest of former General is very good. But your assertive statement that the General escaped an attack by the Liberation TIGERS of TAMIL EELAM in your words “The 59 year old General who had survived an LTTE suicide bomb attempt on his life” remains to be proven on courts. Also The events taking place now, the brutality of his the juniors in the armed forces against him and that the attempt on his life then would have been the work of Mahinda and Gota clan to get rid of him for their smooth sailing. You need to investigate that please. Strong chance that the murder attempt on General Fonseka’s life then could have been the work of Mahinda and GOTABAYA. Just for instance take into account the unsolved recent murders of journalist, politicians and RAJAPAKSE”S foes.

The attempted assassination of Sarath Fonseka was by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam……..DBSJ

  223. How come the Pillayans and Karunas and Weerawansas have become esteemed leaders and the man who gave his life to serve the nation becomes a traitor only when he joins the opposition camp?

  224. Seems like a meticulously planned operation, details of which were probably worked out since the date he announced his candidacy.
The timing was also perfect with the important players like Mahinda, Kotha, Ranil, Mangala, Sampantha, Rohitha? planning their visits outside the country during the crucial moment.
They wanted to keep him without any contacts with media people and opposition leaders atleast for a short period, so the arrest was made by Military Police on some alleged military offences comitted within six months of service. What constitutes an active service would become an issue at the Court.
But before that he would be charged on many other counts such as coup, assasination attempt, bribery, overdue telecom account, improper association with seventy one plus women including military personnel , murder of Lasantha, Raviraj and many more unsolved mysteries. He can expect a long stay at the Chalet if he is lucky, otherwise the dungeon.

  225. Enjoy. Tamils were Enjoying the same treatment for 3 decades. Now it is your turn.
If I remember right, It is Thangathurai or Kuddimani, who said in the court that the laws you use against us will turn against you one day.

    That is what happening.

  226. History repeats it self. Every body knows how Sarath Fonseka treats his enemies in Army. Government is treating him very well .

  227. “what goes around comes around”
“every action has an equal and opposite reaction”

Mahinda Iye and his bros your turn will be soon,

At least now people in that beautiful island can realize who is their real enemies are, not tamils, their enemiers are major party politicians. Since the so called independence, politicians of major parties who is in power in that island do what ever to hold on to their chairs at any cost.

It is time for every civilian in that country unanimously named by majority sinhalese as Srilanka to throw these opportunistic politicians and bring younger generation to power to restore democracy to ensure freedom and equal rights to every citizen of that country.

This is the only way move froward to lead the country to prosperity and restore normalcy. Otherwise suffering will continue to everyone in that island.

  228. #233 Lucky Oneill

What the heck are you doing in Canada?
If you love MR and Srilanka, first of all why you left the country? if you praise that killing filed and totalitarian regime why don’t you go back there, its a hell out there and MR & bros need people like you and will treat you as a king.

Sinhala diaspora like you are the worst enemies of that land. At the expense of poor sinhalese life and their suffering you guys are jut B…..S…ing around and fuel the fire to continue their sufferings as you enjoying all the freedom and prosperity in western world.

    what goes around comes around.

  229. I ask all sri lankans who live in western counties whos support MR to go back to SL and live there for ayear and write these commebtss I’m sure you will see the trueth.
you are live in a country with human rights and many more freedom than sl people! get real!!

  232. South Asia becoming KINGDOMS of Dynasties – In India Gandhi dynasty, In China Communist Kingdom, In Burma Military Junta, Pakistan almost a Military Junta and Srilanka was under Bandaranayake, Senanayake, Jayawadene families and now under alleged WAR CRIMINALS Mahinda & Bros Ltd.
NOT EVEN A MINOR Protest, by Sinhalese, against the SRILANKAN GENOCIDAL WAR against Tamils recently by forcing them to settle a tiny so called SAFE ZONES and starved and bombed them, even after the Srilanka locked them in CONCENTRATION CAMPS but as soon as former Army Commander- alleged WAR CRIMINAL- was arrested, Sinhalese mass protesting against the arrest because the Sinhala mass NEVER EVER respect Tamils and Minorities as THEIR OWN people at all as Mr.Sarath FOnseka himself several times said that SRILANKA ONLY FOR SINHALESE.
The international community must hold a UN referendum in North and East of the island, like the one held in EAST TIMOR, to know the will of minorities before the Srilanka colonise all North and East areas with SINHALESE only as the Srilanka have been doing since 1948 to date.
Srilankan census reports are enough to show the real pattern of SRILANKAN ETHNIC CLEANSING of Minorities in NORTH AND EAST. For example, in 1837 British Colonial rulers carried out first census in the island and shown JUST 18 SINHALESE LIVED IN THE ENTIRE NORTH AND EAST and First Srilankan Census, after independence, shown that JUST 286 SINHALA WORKERS lived in he EAST ALONE but now more than a MILLIOn SINHALESE were settled by chasing out Tamils and Muslims in North and East. Now the whole VANNI Mainland was CLOSED for any independent bodies and srilanka continue with ETHNIC CLEANSING of Tamils in VANNI.
International community PLEASE ACT NOW to save the Minorities from the NAZI SinHELLa fundamentalist Srilankan state

  233. There is a blog run by SF’s daughter Aparana under the tittle “Where is my father?” in transcurrent.com

Your father is on his way to see VP.

“Innoruvar Vetdhanai Ivarhalukku Vedikkai” (Agony of others is amusing to these people) You are disgusting…………..DBSJ

  234. Being the street wise journalist he is. Mr Jeyaraj should write a piece on Fonseka’s secret deals with the JVP while he was still in uniform.

The latest revelation that Fonseka was speaking frequently, to Tilvin Silva , the hard core JVP heavy is fascinating. Tilvin and his mates are arch enemies of the Tigers and the UNP.

When Ranil tried hard to give Prabakan , ISGA Tilvin and his mates are the ones who forced Chandrika to dissolve parliament and kicked Ranil out. Chandrika was forced by the JVP although she was under relentless pressure from the pro Tiger Foreign governments who are Ranil’s mates.

What Premdasa and Ranil did to the JVP during the second insurrection is etched in Srilankan history as the most brutal suppression of Srilankan youth ever.

So Tilin, one of the few survivors of the UNP death squads, to all of a sudden become buddies with Ranil and also the LTTE proxy Sampathan seem very odd.

Tilvin most probably was trying to stich up both Ranil if Fonseka won.Given the behavior displayed by Fonseka before and after the election ,he is demonstrates unpredictable and un ethical behaviour very well.

I tend to believe that Ranil’s last ditch move to get Sampathan on the platform was to ensure that any chances of Foneka passing the post was eliminated.

Jeyaraj’s input will certainly help the pro Fonseka diaspora to look at the up coming polls in a pragmatic and sensible angle.

  235. It is very interesting how people who cheered the LTTE’s ethnic cleansing, bombings, murders, and torture of thousands in the vast Wanni Gulag, are preaching here about lack of “democracy” in Sri Lanka!

Not one of you “Democ-Rats” cried foul when the LTTE was doing that, but now all of you are piling in here criticizing the Government of Sri Lanka that eradicated terrorism and brought peace to the Nation!

I’ll tell you a secret: All of you guys are Incurable Eelamists nursing your anger about the disappearance of your racist apartheid state in Sri Lanka, and trying your darnest to undermine and execute a “Regime Change” so you can resurrect the vanished Eelam.

DREAM ON for it will NEVER HAPPEN!. Sitting in foreign lands, you guys don’t understand that a Wave of Patriotism has swept Sri Lanka and caused a Paradigm Shift within the hearts and minds of ordinary Sri Lankans; it’s silent majority, not the keyboard warriors of the blogsphere.

On April 8, 2010, the people of Sri Lanka will hand the UPFA another LANDSLIDE victory, and we can proceed with converting Sri Lanka into the “New Wonder lof Asia” with a vision of

    ONE Nation INDIVISIBLE,
    ONE People INDOMITABLE,
    ONE Destiny INSEPARABLE!

Then ALL communities of Sri Lanka, our Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim , Buddhist, Hindu and Christian brothers and sisters will be able to live in peace with EQUAL RIGHTS and EQUAL RESPONSIBILITIES to LOVE, DEFEND and NUTURE the Motherland.

No COMMUNAL RABBLE ROUSERS of ANY KIND will be TOLERATED in Sri Lanka.

You guys can keep wailing in Virtual Eelam and bite your nails to the bone marrow in YOUR FRUSTRATION, but ordinary Sri Lankans will PROSPER IN PEACE!

  236. # 271. Kumar

It is perfectly alright, for those affected Tamils if they want to know the truth about the war crimes, even though the govt does not care or try to hide the crime of Armed forces.

If your son or daughter is killed by a murderer (even by police in custody), it is perfectly alright if you want to know the truth, even though the police or Govt would take these things lightly and attribute its a rare or freak incident..

  237. Let Mahinda kill Fonseka
    Let Gothabaya kill Mahinda

Let jokers like Mano Ganesan and Sivajilingam be killed by other sinhalese extremists
Let Tsunami rout entire Sri Lanka (Except N & E provinces)

    – Cold blooded murders & disappearances of Journalist
    – War crime in killing surrendered LTTE cadres
    – War crime in killing captured cadres without justice
    – War crimes in aerial bombing of civilian targets

But they are trivial things against SF until the moment he dared to speak out on war crimes”

Same way that Mangala Samaraweera who once said that Fonseka is not fit to lead the Salvation Army can be the General’s chief mouthpiece. Same way that TNA who are the proxi-LTTE can be supporters of the general who destroyed their masters.

“you raise very valid points but what you forget is, except in cases of wanton killings and destruction, most people in a country wouldn’t want any trial or punishment for leaders/commanders of security forces engaging in armed action against insurgency. This is true of most citizens of the West too.”

The laws of Sri-Lanka do not care what “most people” in the country like or don’t like. The law is the law, end of story.

“You talk of unearthing truth mainly because you happen to be related to the affected masses in this case. ”

And you reached this conclusion how?

“But the majority on the other side would be happy to let the truth remain buried for the foreseeable future as they perceive it to be largely collateral and wanton/excessive only in a few cases. ”

What they “perceive” is of no interest. It is what actually happened that is of any value. All evidence so far show that there was more “wanton/excessive” carnage that could have been easily avoided. When the LTTE were cornered with those tens of thousands of civilians, it was apparent that the LTTE were virtually finished but the government’s fear that Prabhakaran might escape led them to knowingly massacre all civilians and combatants wholesale. This could have easily been avoided.

“This is the mentality of all those people in this world that support armed action by the state against insurgency. ”

Again, the laws of Sri-Lanka don’t care what “all those people in the world” think. But tell me, can you give me examples to support your assertion?

“Look at what’s happening in Afghanistan. The western public aren’t too enthusiastic in prosecuting the NATO army personnel for civilian killings except in cases where they perceive that the ground troops engaged in unprovoked killings. But ask any Afghan national, he would say all those involved in all civilian killings should be punished.”

You do realise that your examples above don’t prove your previous statement because the above example is not that of insurgencies, but of one country acting against another. If you perceive this to be the same, then you only lend credence to the fact that the tamils in SL are indeed a separate nation and that the actions of Sri-Lanka were similar to that of one nation’s callousness on another nation.

“At a time when many international agencies are looking into war crimes allegations in SL, the person that was part of these operations saying something that lends credence to these allegations would never be perceived as appropriate by many in the country.”

I don’t care what’s “perceived” as appropriate or not. That’s like Germans in Nazi Germany “perceiving” those who ratted on the Nazis’ war-crimes as inappropriate. So you are actually stating that many in the country consider it “inappropriate” for the truth on the war-crimes to come out? So much for national reconcialiation between the two communities.

“The SL tamils may want the truth to come out wrt the war crimes but majority of the sinhalese are not interested. This is the hard reality. It’s bitter but it’s like that everywhere.”

Again, your statement only gives rise to the notion that the SL Tamils are a separate nation. Moreover, if such is the hard reality, the government should speak with respect to the hard reality. Talking of reconciliation of both communities while the communities are polarized with regards to the truth and with the larger community burying the truth is not going to cause any form of reconciliation.

    #273-Navin:

“Majority of people in this country have already decided that neither MR nor GR nor SF nor any of the soldiers who spearheaded the war effort against LTTE are war criminals.”

The laws of Sri-Lanka don’t care what majority or minority of people in the country think. The law is the law, end of story.

“It doesn’t matter what international law”

Oh yes it does. Sri-Lanka is part of the international community and has signed up to a number of international laws. Please go learn Sri-Lankan law, international law and history and try to pass your 3rd Grade exams before responding to any of my posts.

“Sinhalese are 75% majority of this country and there is no way in hell that you diaspora Tamils <5% of the population are going to go against their wishes and prosecute someone for war crimes."

It is not the just the tamil diaspora, the tamils in SL want justice too. If you know anything about democracy and the rule of law, you will know that even if the entire country has wishes against the rule of law and there is one person in the entire country that upholds the law, any proper democracy will uphold the rule of law and support that one person. But seeing that you are part of the new, dictatorial, draconian Sri-Lanka, you probably wouldn't understand. Your 3rd grade education will not help either.

    "Re: Betrayal of the Country.

"It’s sad that some retards and morons think SF was going to tell the “truth” to the world and international tribune, about war crimes."

Did you read the news today? According to your statement above, the government media minister among others will fall into your category of "retards and morons".

"then he could have easily done that while he came to renew his green card, when the US authorities wanted to contact him. Why did he not do it then? It was because he had nothing to say. GET IT???"

No, I don't. Your claim is just conjecture. The reason he did not do it then was because he was still in the good books of the government. Now that he isn't, he is willing to spill the beans. Otherwise, using your logic, the government has to throw all of what Karuna had to say after he defected from the LTTE, because he didn't say those things while he was with the LTTE, so does that mean he had nothing to say?

"It’s sad that people who stand for this truth and all that great ideological mumbo jumbo"

Its nice to know that you consider truth to be "ideological mumbo jumbo". You must be a fine individual indeed.

"forget that SF is a 2 tongued liar who will throw his mother under the bus to achieve what he wants. "

No. SF, who I have no respect for as an individual for what he did, is nonetheless far more forthright and truthful than the Rajapaska bros. It was SF who even during the war, constantly spoke his mind. SF made disparaging remarks like "Sri-Lanka belongs to Sinhalese", etc., but he spoke his mind. Rajapaksa brs on the other hand while harboring such thoughts, speak flowerly language. SF is a venomous tongued person, but NOT 2 tongued. The Rajapaksa bros are two-tongued.

"Truth is fine and dandy, if told by a honest person, not by a man who beats his wife, cut people’s ears, rape his servants and impregnate them and so on…"

No it isn't. The Truth is independent of any indivdual or thing. With regards to people of questionable character, the truth comes out under certain conditions and circumstances. For instance, I am sure you consider the Tigers to be despicable individuals who don't speak the truth. This is what the SL Gov continuosly claims. And yet, it is from these tigers, that the SL Gov claims to have unearthed many "Truths" during interrogation. Then, take Karuna. The SL Gov claims that he has spoken of many truths regarding the tigers. Do you consider him an honest person? If yes, did you consider him an honest person before he defected? No? Well, what changed? Why do you believe him now? Why does the SL Gov take his words with respect to tigers as truth?

"SF who praised and gave credit to MR and GR after the war, while he was the Army Chief, did a 360 degree turn when he wanted to become the President. Nice going, isn’t it… So much for the “truth”, more like CONVENIENT TRUTH!"

Actually, it should be termed "Unequivoval truth". For people like the Rajapaksa Bros, Fonseka, and Karuna, the truth comes out only when it is their personal benefit that counts. I don't mind how it comes out, as long as it comes out.

"If that’s what you call truth, then god really needs to protect Sri Lanka from traitors like SF and even more from morons who believe this traitor stood for truth! "

No one ever claimed that SF stood for truth, just that circumstances are such that he is ready to speak it. But the SL Gov does claim that Karuna stood for truth. But funny how you never ask god to protect Sri-Lankan with respect to him no?

"All of us are for the truth, not just one person and if anyone wants to push a war crime agenda, lets start with the British, your Colonial masters, to Vietnam war and the current Iraq war and see how far these “I am all for the truth” campaigns lasts…"

Your above examples are of war-crimes by one nation on another, not by a nation on its own people. So even in your own mind, the SL tamils are a separate nation. See, the truth always comes out, whether one likes it or not.

"By the way this has nothing to do with Sinhalese buddhist nationalism, but everything to do with being a Sri Lankan… So please leave it alone or it may just expose the real motives behind such posts and may prove my previous point…"

The only thing your post has exposed is the fact that god really needs to save Sri-Lanka from people like you, and that you have no more than a 3rd grade education.

"Sitting in foreign lands, you guys don’t understand that a Wave of Patriotism has swept Sri Lanka and caused a Paradigm Shift within the hearts and minds of ordinary Sri Lankans;"

Oh yes, I read about that wave yestarday. Funny thing though, the police fired tear-gas and water cannons at the wave.

If Tamil’s were in a majority in SL, do you think they would have treated the Sinhalese better? Not so because we are all human
    —————————————————-

Tamils are not like that. They are good people. They respect others. Treat others well. It is vandharai vazhavaikkum tamizhagam. Vandhu parungal tamil nattuku.

come and see for yourself to the Tamil Nadu. If the Tamils were in majority then they would not have trampled the rights of the sinhalese and make them feel second class citizens.

    They are a cultured people.

come and see for yourself to the Tamil Nadu. If the Tamils were in majority then they would not have trampled the rights of the sinhalese and make them feel second class citizens.
    They are a cultured people.

So so so Tamils have some kind of gene in their genetic make up that make them superior beings to Sinhalese? Perhaps that is also why there were many more Tamil students in universities prior to standardization than Sinhalese though the ethnic ratio is 75-13.

Thank you Mahesh. Finally, the cat jumped out of the bag.

  249. #297 Ananda-USA

All tamils wanted was EQUAL RIGHTS. From 1948, we have been marginalized. After killing us for years, you think all is hunky dory just cuz we have a monkey saying ‘one sri lanka’ now?? 300 0000 people jailed? thats a great way to gain our trust, dumbass.

Not all Tamils want or wanted Eelam. Get that right.

You can harp all you want on behalf of your LTTE friends, but this has nothing to do with them.

According to you truth is independent of who says it.. even proven liars..? GREAT stay with that, and your wish for the TRUTH on behalf of your pro LTTE groups will dawn soon… Keep dreaming “Rajah” and I will keep my 3rd grade education and end replying to you high calibre logic!

BTW read your original post and see who has mentioned retards and morons in their post… I guess the “truth” hurts when it’s directed at you by another does it now?

If you know anything about democracy and the rule of law, you will know that even if the entire country has wishes against the rule of law and there is one person in the entire country that upholds the law, any proper democracy will uphold

The legislature is superior to the judiciary in any country including the western block _and_ legislature is chosen by the majority for we are a democracy. Now see if you can wrap your head around that.

the rule of law and support that one person. But seeing that you are part of the new, dictatorial, draconian Sri-Lanka, you probably wouldn’t understand. Your 3rd grade education will not help either.

Please do pardon me the 3rd grade drop out, for wasting your precious time.

  252. good piece once again DBSJ.

  253. 314. Rajah:

Just want to add a little to my previous post in 318. If international law is so concerned about human rights and war crimes, I wonder what rights people of Iraq, Palestine and Afghans have these days! Does international law warrant countries to go on invading other countries even against the wishes of the UNSC? Can you tell me the judgment delivered recently by the US court against those Black waters mercenaries who shot and killed 17 Iraqi civilian in cold blood? Forget about Iraq and Afghanistan, where the hell was international law and right to protect when Sinhalese were been killed left and right by the LTTE for the past 30 years! What did US representative to UNSC say about Israel’s week long war against Palestine recently?
Did she say that we ought to dig into war crimes by Israel? Does international law warrant US giving protection to a wanted terrorist like Rudrakumaran? Does international law warrant UK giving protection to Balansinham while his followers are terrorizing another country? Didn’t White house say some time back that Geneva convention does not apply to al-Qaeda fighters since they are not part of a recognized military — now don’t tell me LTTE is a recognized military. There is no such thing as an international law– period. Whoever has the power rules.

I suggest that you go and retake you 3rd grade exams.

“You can harp all you want on behalf of your LTTE friends, but this has nothing to do with them.”

Where did my post have anything to do with LTTE friends? Don’t you know how to read aswell?

“According to you truth is independent of who says it.”

Not according to me. Its a universal fact that the truth gets exposed by anyone under the right circumstances and conditions.

    “even proven liars..?”

Yes. As clearly otulined in my post, Karuna was for years claimed a liar by the Government, and suddenly after his defection from the LTTE, the Government gives him a high post and takes all what he says as the truth.

“BTW read your original post and see who has mentioned retards and morons in their post… I guess the “truth” hurts when it’s directed at you by another does it now?”

You will have to forgive me. I assumed you had a 3rd grade education and would therefore have the comprehension skills to understand what I was getting at. I now realize that you are in kindergarden, so let me spell it out for you:

I did mention retards and morons. I never denied it, but I clearly state who I think those people are.
You mention retards and morons and defined it as:

“It’s sad that some retards and morons think SF was going to tell the “truth” to the world and international tribune, about war crimes.”

So in other words, according to you, anyone who thinks SF was going to tell the “truth” are retards and morons.

    Todays news:

    From:
    http://news.oneindia.in/2010/02/11/fonseka-warned-keep-quiet-war-crimes-ltte-lanka.html

    ————-
“He has reportedly spoken regarding certain things that took place during the war. He also said he is going to provide evidence,” Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene said while speaking to reporters.

“If he (Fonseka) is going to give evidence to certain international organisations regarding incidents that have taken place after the war was initiated then I believe that the army has the right to question such a military officer,” he said
    ————–

Note that nowhere does the media minister deny any of Fonseka’s alleged evidence. He makes it amply clear that he believes that if Fonseka speaks about certain incidents during the war and provides evidence, then Fonseka’s arrest is justified. Now, ask yourself, why would Fonseka be in trouble for speaking of incidents in the war unless the incidents were war-crimes? Do you think Fonseka was going to talk about how he and other officers played chess or marbles to blow off some steam? Or perhaps he was going to mention how they boogied down to the baila tune while his Brigadier was performing a strip tease?
The statements by the media minister are clear that he himself views the war-crimes as truth that will be spilled out by Fonseka.
Now, if your pea-brain was able to digest all this so far, you would realize that your statement on “retards and morons” implicates the media minister as a retard and moron.
If you still don’t get it, you never will.

“The legislature is superior to the judiciary in any country including the western block _and_ legislature is chosen by the majority for we are a democracy. Now see if you can wrap your head around that.”

The legislature as it stands today and **was** chosen by the majority is what should be held as the reference, not what you think it should be changed to or what the majority is **going** to change it to. Your view of changing the legislature by the majority at will based on the future unfolding of events is not democracy. Changing laws at will to suit ones whims is dictatorship.

“Please do pardon me the 3rd grade drop out, for wasting your precious time.”

Indeed. Don’t try your half-baked rubbish on me.

A legislature can function only in so far as they have the approval of the majority. That is democracy 101.

Besides 1) a legislature can enact laws that affect all time 2) not even the present legislature believes in your war crimes charges.

So please stop trying to twist heaven and earth to take revenge from those who vanquished the LTTE. Its is quite obvious what you are after– even to a 3rd grade drop out.

Is that how you view the Sri-Lankan war? As one nation invading another?
    Firstly, 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
Secondly, the war-crimes investigations have been going on for the Gaza war. The UN is pushing hard regardless of Israel’s stubborn stand.
War-crimes charges have been brought out in the past for Serbia, Rwanda, Somalia, etc. You need to read some history.

“Forget about Iraq and Afghanistan, where the hell was international law and right to protect when Sinhalese were been killed left and right by the LTTE for the past 30 years!”

So you are putting the SL Gov on the same footing as the LTTE? The UN wants an investigation into war-crimes by both the SL Gov and the LTTE. Did you not know that?

Rudrakumaran is a lawyer and has not performed any acts of terrorism. You are more of terrorist with your screwed up views of the law.

  257. RE: siribis and associated morons

    This news just came out:

    http://beta.thehindu.com/news/international/article105221.ece

    ————–
Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa has linked General Fonseka to the brutal murder of Sunday Leader editor Lasantha Wickremtunga. The Editor was killed by unidentified gun men in January last year and till date the authorities have not able to track them down. “Yes, of course. We know there was no other person. You have to see the circumstances.

Some of the media people harmed had never criticised any other person except him, or people close to him. Nothing happened to those who had been criticising me or the President. “We have a clue whom he has used. We are very convinced. In fact, I know for sure. He was definitely responsible for 5 or 6 cases [of disappearances] where media people were involved,” he told the paper.
    ———————

Now, siribiris, for all this time, Gothabaya claimed that no one knew who killed Lasantha, now suddenly Gothabaya says that it is Fonseka. 8 months ago, Gotabhaya claimed Fonseka to be the greatest general in the world, and now, as you like to mention: 360 degree turn. Only after Fonseka lost the election, they have figured out it was Fonseka who did it. How did you put it?…..”Convenient truth”. Now tell me, is Gothabaya a proven liar? If not, how do explain this wonderful turn of events?

siribis, just another quick question, are Gothabaya and Navin studying in the same Kindergarden class as you are?

  258. #323 Navin:

Your stupidty precedes you. Stop arguing for the sake of arguing.

“A legislature can function only in so far as they have the approval of the majority. That is democracy 101.”

And how often is that approval taken? Every day? You don’t even know what democracy means do you?

“Besides 1) a legislature can enact laws that affect all time”

    Who said that they couldn’t?

“2) not even the present legislature believes in your war crimes charges.”

The present legislature has not done anything that supersedes the laws of Sri-Lanka that is perfectly clear about the fact that innocent people cannot be killed at the personal whims of anyone, the military or the ruling regime. Your rebuttal is laughable.

Lets take a step back and see how this started. I stated that the laws of Sri-Lanka that clearly don’t allow war-crimes(killings of innocents) by anyone, ruling regime or otherwise cannot be superseded. You countered with the argument that the legislature is superior to the judiciary and that it is chosen by the majority. I then countered that the legislature as it is today does not absolve the killing of innocents. Now you come and say that the legislature can only function with the approval of the majority? The majority has already approved the current legislature and I have yet to see it supersede the judiciary with respect to repealing laws against killing innocents. Are you that stupid that you still don’t get it?

“So please stop trying to twist heaven and earth to take revenge from those who vanquished the LTTE. ”

The fact that my repetition that innocent civilians were killed still hasn’t registered into your pea-brain is quite telling. Get over your wet-dreams of the LTTE.

“Its is quite obvious what you are after– even to a 3rd grade drop out.”

Ah…Finally. Some truth. I am glad you have finally acknowledged on this forum the true extent of your education.

  259. #314,Rajah,

“You do realise that your examples above don’t prove your previous statement because the above example is not that of insurgencies, but of one country acting against another. If you perceive this to be the same, then you only lend credence to the fact that the tamils in SL are indeed a separate nation and that the actions of Sri-Lanka were similar to that of one nation’s callousness on another nation.”

You have let the cat out of the bag here. FYI, the ISAF is actually, at least on paper, only assisting the Karzai govt in establishing the rule of the afghan central govt in all its territory, howsoever corrupt or illegitimate that govt may be. That is, they are doing the dirty work for Karzai and fighting the insurgents that oppose the afghan govt. (regardless of the true motives of the ISAF). So, as Navin says, probably your concern seems not of the killings of innocent SL tamils but the failure of the ealam national project. Man, you guys never change.
Anyway, you talk so eloquently of rule of law here forgetting that it’s the people’s representatives that enact the law. What if the SL parliament tomorrow brings a constitutional amendment saying that the conduct of the armed forces during the period of the insurgency, say from 2006 to 2009, cannot be contested in any court? I know this sounds outrageous but I am just giving you an example why something if the majority doesn’t support can’t be enforced even if it has been mentioned in the rule book. This is like the US designating gitmo detainees as enemy combatants and not just criminals to avoid their trial in US courts. In the case of Israel, the Israeli govt is now blaming field commanders for civilian killings and it has already brought charges on two of them. Every one knows that this is a farce but they also know that they can’t go beyond this. What if, in the end, SL does the same? That’s blaming a few field commanders, for all the excessive use of force? It will all be fine on paper, and the chapter will be closed. Sounds bitter? This is what I have been saying all along. If the govt and the people of a country do not want something to be done, you can’t force it beyond a point. Learn to live with that. Yeah, I know it’s hard to swallow. And don’t dream of international sanctions. There is a 400 pound gorilla by the name India in the vicinity, which will never allow that to happen. Not for any altruistic reasons but for camouflaging its own dismal record of anti insurgency operations. See, we in India, don’t follow double standards!

  260. 315. Mahesh:- My views are based on my experiences while living with Tamils both in Colombo and Jaffna. They are status/cast conscious people but lovely in all other aspects. Their pecking order is established and surprisingly I find that even among those in Sydney!! I know one thing that drove them mad was when IPKF Javans’ used to come and search their houses because they considered them lower class rubbish!! I have been to Tamil Nadu but did not live there long enough to form opinions. My view is if the Tamils are in a majority, I don’t think they would treat the Sinhalese any better because both the races are very close in thinking and we are all human. Of course, I find it much easier to get long with Tamils as they are more flexible, probably because they are a minority. Of course we can agree to disagree.

    320. jack dee:- I thought you were from STC & now you have given yourself away!
    Don George

  261. 324. Rajah:

It would be first better to add something to your brain instead – some more grey matter would greatly help.
Son, you need to finish school, otherwise I shudder to think what morons like you are going to do to Sri-Lanka.

Do you think heaping insults on others makes you look more prudent or any more sensible let alone a respectable character?

Is that how you view the Sri-Lankan war? As one nation invading another?
    Firstly, 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
Secondly, the war-crimes investigations have been going on for the Gaza war. The UN is pushing hard regardless of Israel’s stubborn stand.
War-crimes charges have been brought out in the past for Serbia, Rwanda, Somalia, etc. You need to read some history.

The nature of what constitutes a war crimes does not depend on whether the war is between
two nations or whether the war is between a state and a terrorist group. If Black Waters
can shoot in self defense so can SLA. If when Iraqi’s die in such incidents and the world does not
believe them to be war crimes, when Tamils die as a result of SLA acting in self defense
under LTTE provocations, they cannot be war crimes either for there is no difference
between Tamil civilians and Iraqi civilians.

Your assertion about there been war crimes convictions against Serbia, Rwanda, Somalia, etc
only proves my argument about selective application of international law. Are the countries
you mentioned powerful countries in the world or the real perpetrators of most war crimes?

So you are putting the SL Gov on the same footing as the LTTE? The UN wants an investigation into war-crimes by both the SL Gov and the LTTE. Did you not know that?

My question is why is UN interested in investigating war crimes by LTTE when it is no more. Who is UN going to punish now, the dead VP? LTTE has been committing crimes beyond war crimes for more than 2 decades and they didn’t even consider them a terrorist organization then. Why were they not motivated to investigate those crimes then? How many civilians lives could have been saved had the world stopped at least the arms flow to LTTE then? So its is quite clear to us why UN is interested in investigating LTTE at this point.

Rudrakumaran is a lawyer and has not performed any acts of terrorism. You are more of terrorist with your screwed up views of the law.
Balasingham had no followers, nor did he commit any acts of terrorism.

    Go fly a kite.

We are not talking about the LTTE here you fool, we are talking about the innocent civilians that were killed.

The civilians got killed not because SLA were shooting at them but because LTTE were using them as a human shield. That is why it is considered collateral damage and not a war crime. This is not the first time civilians got killed during a war and it most certainly won’t be the last. GOSL new the danger to the civilians and that is why the LTTE was asked to release them many times. There was no way however to stop the war to save the civilians for that would have meant putting all the civilians in the country at the mercy of LTTE.
    <p.
I'm quite aware that you know exactly what happened but I'm simply responding to your comment because some other person who is not conversant with
what really happened after reading you comment may form a wrong impression about GOSL otherwise.

    “Whoever has the power rules.”
    Spoken like a true dictator.

How can I be a dictator by identifying how the super powers operate in the world? Could you please
at least make coherent sentences. Besides, I’m just interpreting what is happening. It doesn’t mean I
approve of it. Besides, there is most certainly nothing I or GOSL can do to change the power plays in the world.

I’m not interested in trying to untwist your twisted arguments for I have better things to do.
I rarely respond to your comments for I know the kind of person you are and getting into an argument
with you serves no purpose but to waste my time and energy. This is my last post.

There is a 400 pound gorilla by the name India in the vicinity, which will never allow that to happen
    ————————————————————————-

You are overestimating India just because it is bulging with people like a obese woman. Woman is the gender to describe india because it has never shown it had a backbone since independence. It is only good at bullyng entities that are smaller, but will never stand up to those who are bigger.I think it lost its spirit after the routing it got from the chinese in 1962. Before that it was asserting itself a bit , but after the chinese overan Indian territory with such ease, it folded up like an umbrella and became a subservient nation. A nation of ass lickers. If you think India is going to stand up to the west you must be a retard. It is scared to even stand up to Srilanka.

If you think India is a 400 pounder then the US is a 1500 pounder and the EU also the same.

  263. #329 Navin

The civilians got killed not because SLA were shooting at them but because LTTE were using them as a human shield
    ——————————————————————————
It is a established fact that the LTTE was using the civilians as a human shield, and even went to the extent of shooting at them when they tried to go towards government lines. If you trace the sequence of events this was the last part. It was the government that asked the civillians to leave their homes and concentrate into these so called safe zones that ultimately became killing fields. So i think the government had a responsibility to try to minimise the civilian casualties, as these people became cannon fodder due to the GOSL instructions.

When the government was fighting the JVP did they tell the people to concentrate into a small area. And if they had done so would the government shell them and kill them if the JVP used them as human shields?

I am very puzzled by the fact that the government gave such instructions, without allowing the people to just stay at their homes. That coupled with the fact that they did not allow independent observers to monitor the situation makes it imperative that a war crimes investigation has to be done, during which mitigating factors such as the constraints faced by the government would be a factor in its defense. To try to block an investigation which will reveal the truth, regardless of whether it is pro or anti government, is unfair by the tamil community and humanity as a whole. What could happen to someone else can always happen to you, that principle is the only way that the world can safeguard itself. If you allow a precedent then the whole world can get engulfed one day in these types of incidents.

It s a simple matter of people wanting to know what really happenned, and that by itself is not an unreasonable request.

  264. yesterday’s heroes r today’s traitors.mark my words, sf wld succumb to a natural death while in custody within a month or two. do u remember the twin towers?

    all the best SABA.

  265. Let’s forget about Sarath Fonseka and move on. It has become a dead issue. Judge Gothabaya has already sentenced him. He will be released at the right time to contest the next presidential election, then we can talk about him. Here is an excerpt from an article

“On Thursday, the defence secretary, also President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s younger brother, claimed that Fonseka had planned to impose military rule in Sri Lanka and could face a five-year jail term for treason.

In a related development, Fonseka’s wife, Anoma Fonseka, has indicated that she might join politics and fight the upcoming general election if the need arose”

Judge Gothabaya said conjugal visits can be arranged for her from the women’s prison to Mr. Fonseka’s cell and vise versa.

  266. special investigator/judge judy Gota has also said that Fonseka killed Lasantha. So when he has served his 5 year sentence he will be hanged. Now we can forget about Lasantha too. Everything has been sorted out. just like in the movies the good guys prevail and the bad guys are finished, and you come out of the movie hall very satisfied with a happy smile on your face. If the director had done it vise versa you would have said it is a shitty movie.

  267. 331. shankar:

When the government was fighting the JVP did they tell the people to concentrate into a small area. And if they had done so would the government shell them and kill them if the JVP used them as human shields?

In the case of JVP there was no front line. Hence the question of asking people to move to a particular area doesn’t make sense.

Even though the government didn’t shell people, make no mistake that the government sent its paramilitaries at night to pick up anyone that they thought was in league with the JVP and he/she was killed that night itself and burnt on top of a tire for everyone to see the next day. No one knows how many people died
    that way.

Please do not try to insinuate that had these people been Sinhalese they would have been treated differently. If we start with that then there is no solution to this problem.

It was the government that asked the civilians to leave their homes and concentrate into these so called safe zones that ultimately became killing fields. So i think the government had a responsibility to try to minimize the civilian casualties, as these people became cannon fodder due to the GOSL instructions.

I am very puzzled by the fact that the government gave such instructions, without allowing the people to just stay at their homes.

These people had no homes. LTTE had been chasing people deeper and deeper into areas controlled by them right from the start. When SLA got to Puththukudiirippu, there were people camped along roads who had been displaced all the way from Mannar. The government kept asking people to come towards the front line but LTTE kept them going in the opposite direction and we all know why. At the end when the area got very small, the government asked the people to move towards the shore. I don’t know what was in their minds. May be they had some rescue operation in mind.

I do not believe that there were mass killing of civilians that could have been avoided simply because there was no motivation for such dastardly acts on the government side. To the contrary, they wanted to minimize the casualties among the civilians from the start. More so than international pressure or other reason I believe this is because of the change in attitude towards the Tamil civilians and the ethnic conflict. Ever since CBK’s first term successive governments have always tried to draw a line between Tamil civilians and LTTE. When there is no motivation, I do not see how a crime could be committed.

Of course there could be isolated incidents where specific individuals were not careful or did bad things on purpose but in that case government could take action against such people on its own. However, since no such investigation has been carried out it could be either that it is the view of the government that if such a thing happened that it was a mistake or taking action against them would have been counter productive. Just because these people were not court marshaled in public doesn’t mean no action was taken.

I do not support an international investigation of the sort you describe due to several reason. As far as I see, IC (aka the west) has lost its credibility to ask for such an investigation let alone carry out one.

We had the LTTE problem for many decades. They were killing so many Sinhalese for so many years. Did the international community do anything about that? When they did nothing for the Sinhalese why are they so keen on doing something for the Tamils?

Then what did the international community do while the war was going on. Did they sell let alone give us a single bullet? What did they try to do at final stages of the war? Did they not try to save VP’s ass by stopping the war? Why should we allow such people to come and scrutinize our military. Do we not have any self respect?

Can we consider international community impartial? It is quite clear why the countries who are very vocal against Sri Lanka today are doing so. It is because in each country you will find diaspora lobbying some politician who doesn’t even know where Sri Lanka is on the map let alone have a good understanding of the problem. IC wants this investigation not because they care about the Tamils but because they want the votes of the Tamil diaspora in the next election.

America and Israel can allow any investigation by any party for they know regardless of who investigates or what they find out at the end they themselves will decide who will prosecute whom and what will be reported to the outside world. In such a context, why should we allow such investigations and expose ourselves to others when no one is doing that?

Do any of these countries practice what they preach? They preach us patience against LTTE but it only took one attack against them for them to go and invade two countries. Where as we have been suffering from this menace for 2 bloody decades and yet they advocate we talk peace.

This was our internal problem. What business does UN have in that? Aren’t we an independent country? Do other countries allow investigations into their internal problems by UN? Israel issue is with another country albeit not a recognized one because of Israel’s own indirect veto at UNSC. Did Russia allow a UN investigation into its conduct against Chechnyan rebels?

Why should we answer Diaspora’s wishes. They clearly supported the LTTE and are hell bent on destroying the Sri Lankan state.

It s a simple matter of people wanting to know what really happened, and that by itself is not an unreasonable request.

I’m afraid they will have to live with it. Those were trying times and government did its best to protect their kith and kin and if anyone was lost it wasn’t intentional. At least the majority of the people in this country believe so. Given the state of affairs both locally and internationally things are not conducive for the government to expose its military to such scrutiny.

  268. Some sinhalese who openly challenge the tamils of the island as well as the tamils of Tamil Nadu. Some of them accuse even you also as a traitor.

One sinhalese say that they have only one country. Every one has only one country. If they feel sri lanka alone is their country then let the entire sinhalese diaspora return sri lanka.

Sinhalese are the only people in the subcontinent who are so rude and arrogant. Muslims of Pakistan and Bangaladesh are ready to accept their fellow punjabis, sindhis and bengalis if they embrace islam. Only the sinhalese who follow buddhism and have their roots to bengal and orissa are so intolerant to the extend that they abhor the other race.

There may be sinhalese intellects who understand the reality and accept tamils as brothers and sisters. Many sinhalese are of the opinion that ‘Sinhalese will rule. and Tamils can live and die’.

“If Tamil’s were in a majority in SL, do you think they would have treated the Sinhalese better? Not so because we are all human”
Tamils are good people in nature and they give neutral judgement.. Even LTTE didn’t bomb any schools or hospitals in south.
Actually tamils are majority if you consider the Tamils in the world. Even after the all this, still they take care of Sinhala friends overseas.

  272. 335. Navin :- You have written good logic. I can say 2 things. With the JVP the Sinhala government not only killed the suspected JVPers but also their family members and associates. There were no Diaspora or HR people to protest. With the Tamils I don’t think this happened to this extent and many SLA officers of good standing told me that they are very careful not to mix LTTE with ordinary Tamils. In fact, there was an article by Retd Maj Gen Lalin Fernando in Asia Tribunal, who commanded troops in Jaffna one time, saying among other things how he did not give quarter to any SLA soldier who harassed Tamil civilians. 273. Hi Guys! .. and DBSJ.

This blog is tough to read if you have missed for a few days. For DBSJ – in an Armchair in Toronto it must be quite hilarious to see the response some people have to his article and to the comments therein.

This is like a huge club with alot of sane and insane people argueing and making statements. If all the commentators were in one room I wonder how many would make out alive.

nevertherless Thanks DBSJ for your articles and space for us mean folks who sometimes ( or perhaps a lot of times ) poke at you.

Now for my comment on the Article – This was coming we all knew. I dont agree with the term ‘Disturbing’ in the first para. This is how a non-co-operative person would be taken in any country. I presume what DBSJ means by ‘ Disturbing’ would be the arrest itself.

IF – i mean IF SF has done wrong by the country and its security and by the laws of this land and his institution he has to stomach that.

What SF is going through is nothing compared to the many thousands who suffered worse fate due to this terrible war.

There were many tears from mothers , fathers and children more than SF’s wife can shed.

Cheers to all of you and a lot would forget SFonce the election is full underway.

when Tamils die as a result of SLA acting in self defense
under LTTE provocations, they cannot be war crimes either for there is no difference
between Tamil civilians and Iraqi civilians

    ————————————————————–

You are twisting the whole story.

In Srilankan context, Tamil civilans were not Killed for defensive purposes in the war.

SLA were on the offensive and terrorised & killed Civiliars to move out of Tiger area on their way to victory march over Tigers.

Naturally SLA is fully responsible for killing the Civilians & those surrendered LTTE cadres. (though no one question their killing fighting LTTE forces).

You can never Justify the killings. Accept the crime. Say sorry to affected people. Take action on the offenders and work out for reconciliation.

“A Colombo Court today severely reprimanded the police for not carrying out their duty by arresting the armed thugs who attacked civilians during their peaceful march at Hulftsdorp yesterday and said the police should be ashamed of dancing to the tune of politicians.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Champa Janaki Rajaratne made this observation when the Colombo Crimes Division OIC Premaratne produced eight people in Court in connection with the damaging of public and private property and causing injury to bystanders.

The Magistrate released them on personal bail of Rs.500 each and warned the police not to mislead the Court by suppressing the truth with the intention of safeguarding the real culprits.

“The Police Department and the Judiciary are maintained by public funds and their duty is to serve the public and not to act according to their whims and fancies,” the Magistrate said.

OIC Premaratne in his report to Court said that those who were arrested came in a procession to protest the arrest of former Army Commander and Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka.

The OIC said that at that time a group of government supporters who had gathered near the statue of former president Premadasa retaliated against the supporters of General Fonseka.

When the Magistrate inquired from the OIC whether there were eye witnesses to the incident, the Colombo Central Crimes Division ASP Jayaratne said he witnessed the whole incident and that he advised the two factions to disperse and desist from violence but as his orders were not carried out he directed the police to teargas the crowds and fire water cannons at them.

He also said the pro Fonseka group had not obtained permission to hold the protest rally. At this point the Magistrate asked him whether the pro government faction had obtained permission. The ASP unable to answer her question remained silent.

Counsel Gunaratne Wanninayake appearing for the eight suspects told Court that the police was misleading it and that the police were protecting the armed thugs who with UPFA Municipal Councillor Ajantha Liyanage had attacked the innocent demonstrators.

Mr. Wanninayake said that while the thugs and the police were assaulting the innocent people the lawyers who were present in Court at the time had intervened in the name of democracy.

Magistrate Rajaratne ordered the police to arrest the real culprits who could be clearly identified in the photographs and warned the police to avoid twisting facts and thereby misleading the Court.

The Chief Magistrate also said that people were free to hold dissenting political views but the judiciary and the police had to carryout their duties impartially.”

  285. Fonseka is obliged both by Lankan and international law to co-operate with a duly appointed war crimes enquiry. The fact that present government spokesmen consider this treason shows how morally low they have sunk (of course Fonseka would have agreed totally with them only a couple of months ago).

Now, as far as I can tell the only war crimes that were systemic were the executions of surrendering prisoners at the very end of the conflict, which won’t go away and DBS has already commented on. There may be occasional excesses such as those in the disputed video, but there is no evidence of any policy. The disappearances and murders by Dvanada’s goons in the North and Karuna’s and Pillayan’s in the East and Colombo probably come under straightforward penal law.

  286. after Sinhalese finally managed to get rid of LTTE with great difficulty on their own.

    Mathaya = Capital Punishment
    So SF ?

    VP = Killed
    So MR ????
( If he adopt same strategies as LTTE, that’s mean he is digging his own crave. By terrorizing his own people he can’t rule the country. That will take him to another Mulivaikal as same fate as VP. I think SF has been big threat to MR and his Gov’t and GOSL has credible evidence against SF conspiracy. But I don’t accept the way they arrested him. MR and his regime should understand people’s feeling and act accordingly. I hope they will do so. I don’t think MR is stupid as VP. them not been treated as a terrorist organization by those countries? What is the difference between killing civilians in one’s own country and killing people in another country? However, disgusting it is, unfortunately
this is the situation in the world because diaspora votes are more valuable than lives of Sri Lankans. LTTE started killing people in the 80’s but it took UK more than a decade to even ban them. Even then they allowed Balasinham to roam freely in that country. To this day Noway has not even banned the Tigers and UK MPs are having free discussions with LTTE agents.

These statements make it abundantly clear to anyone how empty it is all your talk of justice, equality, human rights and what not.

Now, while IC are sympathetic to the plight of the affected people, Srilankans questions their credibility.

Is it not shameless to seek help from others and then take all the credit for winning the war to themselves?

We do not owe anything to IC for curbing activities of LTTE in their countries. It is the duty of any country to make sure that their soil is not been made use of to create violence in another country. In fact IC owe us a lot for our suffering was made worst by their negligence. Had we allowed Al-Quaeda to roam around freely in the same manner that western US/UK are allowing LTTE to operate in those countries, we would have been nuked along time ago. We just have to look at Afghanistan and Pakistan for that.

AT THE END OF THE 6 YEARS, EVEN THE UNP WILL FIND IT HARD TO RESURRECT THE ECONOMY. OBVIOUSLY THESE SCUMBAGS ARE NOT FROM GOOD FAMILIES. THEY ARE AS BAD AS THE TIGERS.

  298. would the massacre of 10,000 have made you a tad more comfortable? Or how about the massacre of, say, one?

The minimum number for a massacre is higher than one.

The civilian deaths happened because the LTTE kept them since January as a human shield.

  299. Thank you Mr Jeyaraj. You are right on the money with your latest up date.
Of course Fonseka planned to topple Rajapaksa with the support of the hard core JVPeers Tilin and Somawansa. whilst he was still in uniform.

The preferred option was was the Army Coup. but had to be down graded to the default position to get the Foreign backers lead by Norway and the US..

Ranil joined in desperation. The pro LTTE diaspora and their proxies in Srilanka thought this is the best opportunity they had in three decades to realize their dreams.

Ranil now meeting Rajapaksa to plead for the release of Fonseka seems to me as another sinister scheme. I thought “Fonseka detained by a dictator president would be a vote puller for the opposition.”

  300. 366. Don

However it cannot be extended if tamils are a majority in a country.
    ————————————————–

You are hypothesizing about the Tamils being a majority. I live in a majority tamil land. Tamils live all over the India and also in many parts of the world. I know them well. They are cultured. They will not trample down others. some differences could be there but to say they would have done a sinhala only type legislation or jaffna library burning or 1983 or welikade or kaluthra is not acceptable.

  301. 352-Ananda-USA

You must be an educated man if you are living in the US. Don’t become an ass licker like this in public and pollute this quality blog. It is quite nauseating and more like a country bumpkins mentality. Reminds me of the Mao’s mobs after mao took over waving their flags and with that idiotic smiles on their faces chanting patriotic songs. Finally Deng Ping had to clean up that village donkey mao’s shit and put China on the right track, otherwise they would have been like North Korea now, starving and having endless parades.

Have you heard that patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels. You flew away to the US avoiding army service, lived comfortably there and i noticed in a previous comment vicously attacking Fonseka, even going to the extent of implying he was a traitor for trying to give Eelam. I let that one go because you seemed like a guy who badly needs a shrink, and if i waste my time with every nutter on this blog, I wont have time to wash my ass, but you seem to keep on coming back.

While you are a keyboard patriot from US , this true patriot served the Army loyally for 40 years, rising from the ranks, in the thick of operations when the LTTE was at its peak, and might have even overun the country, being injured 3 times and the last one where he was at deaths door, and you call this man who has dedicated his whole life to stopping Eelam, as a traitor who wants to give Eelam. By the way I’am not a Fonseka supporter, but i call a spade a spade.

You are not a patriot, you are a disgrace to Srilanka. Please try your best not to come back and pollute our beautiful country. Pollute that country all you want, because by giving you a visa the rednecks who wiped out the indians and buffaloes, and brought African slaves, deserve it. Our country has a long and beautiful civilization and culture, except for a blot when the portuguese were here screwing around and planting their western barbarian genes, and sooner all the polluters leave us permanently, the better.

  302. Justice is the corner stone human dignity. With the whole world enjoying the spectacle of the slaughtering of 10,000 – 40,000 tamils in Mullaiteevu per ex UN spokeman, it is astonishing to see where SF’s justice has come from. Mahinda, Gota and Basils time will come. “vallavanukku vallavan vaiyahathil undu”.

  303. Dear Sinhalese,

I understand that you are upset by us. Indeed, it appears that you are quite upset, even angry.

Today, it is the Tamil diaspora and international community yesterday it was “barbarism of LTTE terrorism”, before it was the Federal party, even before that it was the “favouritism of the British”. It appears that Tamils, who could achieve equality and who, therefore, could live, upset you.

Indeed, every few years you seem to become upset by us. You were upset in 1956, in 1958, in 1961 and in 1977 and went on acts of arson, rape, pillage, murder and plain barbarity and we were scornfully asked to go to the Federal party for help.

Of course, dear Sinhalese, long before there was a Tamil tiger, we the Tamil people – upset you. And we go back a long way in the history of Sinhala upset. We upset the “Great” Sinhala King Dutugemunu and you still use his “history” to teach your young ones to be more upset by us.

Reds are upset and monks are upset. The radical Sinhalese are upset and the gentle “Sinhalese moderates” are upset. We upset the Sinhala Hamudawa who massacred tens of thousands of us; we upset the Sinhala police who, collaborated with rioters and killed, burnt and slaughtered untold numbers of us.

And it is because we became so upset over upsetting you, dear Sinhalese, that we decided to leave you – in a manner of speaking – and establish a Tamil state. The reasoning was that living in close contact with you, as resident-strangers, we upset you, irritate you and disturb you. What better notion, then, than to leave you (and thus love you) – and have you love us and so, we decided to come home – home to the same land we were driven to in 1983.
Having left you and your pogroms and riots, having taken our leave from you to live alone in our own little state of Tamil Eelam, we continue to upset you.

Well, dear Sinhalese, consider the reaction of a normal Tamil from Tamil Eelam:

In 1956 and 1958 and 1961 and 1977, there was no “Tamil terrorism” to impede peace between Tamils and Sinhalese. Indeed, there was no Kotias (Tigers) to upset anybody. Nevertheless, the same Sinhalese slaughtered thousands of Tamils in Hingurakgoda, Polonnaruwa, Minneriya and Colombo. Indeed, in 1958 so many Tamil men, women and children were mercilessly hunted down in Polonaruwa Sugar plantation.

Dear Sinhalese, why did you massacre hundreds of Tamils in one day in 1958? Why did you carry out the1977 pogrom and made 75,000 refugees. Could it have been your anger over Tiger terrorism in 2007? And why were thousands of Tamil men, women and children slaughtered in pogroms between 1956-83? Was it because Sinhalese were upset over Tiger terrorism in 1996?

The same twisted faces, the same hate, the same cry of “para demala” (foreign Tamils!) that we hear and see today, were seen and heard then. The same people, the same dream – Sinhala Buddhism only. What you failed to do yesterday, you dream of today.

Dear Sinhalese, you stood by and cheered on when the Sinhala police burnt down our beloved Jaffna library in 1981.
You stood by when Sinhala police massacred attendees at an International Tamil Cultural event in Jaffna.

You contributed and stood by in 1983 genocide, wildly cheered by wild mobs in every Sinhala town and city in your land.

You have massacred 40000 Tamil civilians and incarcerated nearly 3 hundred thousand Tamil civilian without adequate basic facilities to live under barbed wire fences.

Still you were not satisfied and you were up set by the Tigers who were up set by you and tried to give you a taste of your own medicine to you.

Now the Tigers are out, still you are upset by the Tamil Diaspora, International none governmental organisations and any one who talks of Tamil killings, rights, equality,Justice, Peace, Etc.

It looks as you got upset numerous times in the past and now you do not know why and against what or whom to get upset and your upset all the time with every think. And you are not only beginning to get upset with your self but disseminating lies about every thing and body up set you.

Now I can only say to you,

Buddham saranam gacchami (to the Buddha for refuge I go)
Dhammam saranam gacchami (to the Dharma for refuge I go)
Sangham saranam gacchami (to the Sangha for refuge I go)

Will you be happy and not get upset.

    4. HUMAN RIGHTS! to ideas, different views etc
Should not have arrested SF After all Will Power of MR and Tactical Power of SF Made SL Free from Terror.

  305. Great work DBS! Your writings are among those I trust for the degree of underlying depth. The Rajapakse’s are clearly very insecure people. With the breakdown of public confidence in the keepers of the law (police, etc.) it’s a matter of time that frustrated citizenry will develop subversive responses that will ultimately rip the country apart. Of course, the Rajapakse’s and their like will disappear to their real estate plots they’re supposed to own in the US.
By the way, is there potential for suing any Rajapakse brothers or family who are US citizens in the US? Keep up the great work and all the best!

    Good observation.
SL is not the only country except one or two most of the British colonies just like that now.
They introduced democracy but they did not train people handle it.
Both sides keep electing racist/facist narrow minded dictators as leaders.

  308. Dear Jeyaraj,

They are fighting each other to be in power. This is the fate of this country, blessed with natural resources.

Arresting of SF has led to a decrease in support to the Govt. Even the monks are against the manner in which he was arrested. Criminals should be punished. Likely he could not become the president. I feel Ranil is involved in this game with MR. Ma0no and Hakeem have to think about their coalition.

Mano might get played out by Ranil in Colombo Central, Muzamil is a fox. Watch out~~~~~~~~~~

  309. #372-viv

It goes to show we have either a stupid opposition or else a devious one. They could have easily said long ago at the provincial council elections itself that they will not contest unless the 17th amendment of the constitution is implemented. Instead they went on contestiong and thereby made the elections legal. violating the constitution is serious business as you rightly pointed out though country bumpkins might not even know what is a constitution, but what is the use when we have opposition’s who are greedy for power and think they can win. If they had boycotted all the elections then the elections could have been considered null and void and the government would have not had any legitamacy in the eyes of the world.

The simple fact of life is if you don’t strongly push for something you don’t get it. Maybe the opposition tried to be smart, and thought they could come to power and postpone the 17th amendment, and dish out the same medicine to the rajapakshes.

  310. # 365. Navin
Yes, you sure got those points right. Only a moron would understand them
    —————————————————–

Its strange then majority srilankan do not understand them.

  311. There are many reasons for west to interfere across borders such as economical, political and social interests. Economical and political interests are interdependent and are the most common motives of all, while social interests are less interested unless they feel as an obligation or indirectly underpin economical and political interests.

Those envoys came because of the pressure of Tamil Diaspora, perhaps. So they felt bit of obligation to avoid a “blood bath”. A man’s got to do, what a man’s got to do. MR did what he got to do. Eliminated LTTE. Good job!

General Fonseka can be seen in many perspectives. A patriot, traitor, nationalist, eelamist, extremist, gentleman, warrior, strategist, cammander, civilian; depending on the angel you look at him.

He was a patriot/nationalist/extremist/warrior/stategist/ commander/when he said “Sri Lanka belongs to Sinhalese”

He was a traitor/gentleman/ civilian/eelamist, when he said “I will testify for war crimes.

What is our national interest? Hiding war crimes by blocking investigations or promoting invetigations to find if it actually happend and find methods how to avoid in the future and eliminate mistrust of Tamils of Sinahalese genocide Tamils?

Since war crimes/abductions/killings are avoided, more and more crimes happen everyday. Perpetrators are encouraged to continue. If investigations are held and perpetraors are punished, then only you can reduce crimes in a society because of fear of consequences.

But, I am not in favour of having war crimes investigations in Sri Lanka, because it was an exceptional circumstance fighting the most ruthless terrorism for more than a quarter-century. These terrorists should be killed with or without white flags. It was a tumor. When you remove a tumor, bit of good flesh might also be removed unintentionally.

General Fonseka is a patriot. Period. We can trust him. The issue is a personal one, with GR/MR. He said he is convinced that no war crimes happend during war. He said he (or SL Army) is not prepared to protect criminals. Thats how a gentleman like commander should be. He encourages desciline of his Army. That doesnt mean he betrayed the nation or military. He didnt plot a coup either.

We need to learn trusting people. Respect democracy, respect people’s freedom of expression. We dont need Taliban laws in Sri Lanka! We must be united and fight against our enemies. Not against our heroic commander! We dont allow war crimes invetigations in Sri Lanka! General Fonseka shouldnt testify for war crimes either! Release General Fonseka Now!

    No(Ealam/NoDemocracy)InSL 🙂

  312. Hai! 383, U can fulfill your wish in India or any other bigger land than Srilanka. You live in this country having all the benefits as a Srilankan and wishing and waiting our country to be ruined. You can join prabhakaran in hell who ruined Srilankan Tamis taking innocent children as child soildiers and giving all the comforts and education to his children. We all Srilankans, Sinhalese, Muslims Tamils or any other citizen in this country getting all the benifits equally. The present situation in our political field having some problems but that doesn’t mean you can have elam. All the time ruling Srilankan government has treated all citizens the same. U go to hell and have elam.

  313. sjoseph,Navin,
what is the point in you arguing with out understanding the whole history in Srilanka. At least #374 there is some evidence of histry is written why not read it and have your argument. It looks like you both are angery and upset.

  314. I have read most of the comments written in here. I feel still the Sinhala people canot learn from their mistake. Even the Ltte may have learned their mistake of bombs and guns and accepted to silences them. But the Sinhala learers and their supporters still no learned their mistake and continuing their same mentality and tactics since indipendence but with more furocity and more and more state aided. and also now Sinhala people also have begining to get same sidesd goal. Only thing we can do is wait and see they destroy them self . Only way we get out of this mess is Separartion. It means EELAM only.

  315. What everybody forgets is how far and how much MR Govt tolerated SF mad acts and statements both during and after polls.

Yes he was the Army Commander when SL Forces (Army/Navy/AirForce/Police/Civil Defence) defeated the LTTE. Just because of that should he take the fiture of SL in ransom? Should the Govt allows him to behave like a man with no loyalty to the ruling or judiciary?

Why did he beahve like a underworld criminal protesting the arrest. Why couldnt he walked as a professional and descent high ranking officer rspecting his own Army. He delibertaely provoled the same army to manhandle him so that he could win symaphty from people. He suspects that MR and GR are also animals like him. This is the mistake from everyone across the globe criticizing MR/GR regime.

What is our Mahanayake’s doing now? Where were they when SF was spreading venom and decalaring that he will give evidence in internationla war tribunal to bring disgrace to his own army? He is suspected organizing the murders of SUnday Leader Editor, Maj Gen Parami Kulathunga (The long carreied out revenge for fixing SF when he was a Lt in Diyathalawa for raping Gen Kulathunga.s housemaid, Dhanawathi. SOme of these allegtaions are not proven but “A smoke doesn not come without a fire”.

Guys think deep before entering in to quick conclusions. MR/GR has shown the world more democarcy, gratefulness, values, and commitment for country much much better than SF and his allies, JVP, TNA, and Hakeem and Ganeshan.

  316. Mr D B S Jeyaraj,

Difficult to say at times which side you are on!!!.

    What is your actually stance?

I am not on anybody’s side except for being on the side of Truth……………….DBSJ

    1. MR should not have called an election when he had time (2 years more to go)

    —————————————————————————–
Why do you say that?. He won the election so comfortably, dispelling all these talk of a tight contest no. And he seems to have only lost 1 year of his first term according to the supreme court advice given. So he has got rid of a headache. Have you any reasons for giving such a view?

When MR was asked why he did it, he said you have to have elections at the best possible time. Probably he thought my peoples memory is short. Very soon they will forget about the war victory and start scratching their bellies saying badagini.

I don’t think he has confidence in the future of the economy.

i agree with you Sarath should not have contested. It was an act of a spoiled brat not getting his toffees.

  318. Can you imaging what would have been the case if the same epsode took place, where SF is replaced by somebody else and and Manawaduge is repaced by SF.

  319. Pandaravanian,

I have read your comments and can understand your anger and frustrations against the Sinhala community. It is indeed sad that the Sinhalese missed a valuable opportunity to make amends with the Tamils immediately after the war by extending our hands of friendship and helping them to re-build their lives. This is what MR and his government should have done instead of keeping thousands of Tamil civilians locked up in IDP camps, to breed more hatred towards the Sinhalese.

However, I do not agree that you should hate all Sinhalese for the sufferings that the Tamil community have undergone to date. In my view, the path a country takes, whether in its relations with the outside world or within among its own different communities, rests totally in the hands of the ultimate ruler of a country. Only he or she can create harmony internally and externally in dealing with people. The actions, unspoken thoughts and views of the ruler is mirrored in the actions of all state institutions, as the state feels that they have to be loyal to the ruler than do justice to the country and to its people. This is especially the case when we have an all too powerful President.

I believe that we haven’t yet been fortunate enough to have a fearless and honorable ruler who genuinely wanted to get all communities together by treating everybody in a fair and just manner. Finding such a ruler who can put the country and all of its people before self, is the need of the hour.

  320. #391-Rathnavali

In my view, the path a country takes, whether in its relations with the outside world or within among its own different communities, rests totally in the hands of the ultimate ruler of a country.
    —————————————————————————

I totally agree with you on that point. Buck passing should be stopped. It is ridiclous to blame the people for the leaders mistakes. In this democratic system we have no alternatiive but to wait patiently for the next election or hope that the leader gets bumped off.

Pandaravanian should also think that in the same vein, sinhalese can hate the tamils for everything that Prabhaharan did. To my relief i think the sinhalese had matured to an extent that the anger was directed towards Prabhaharan only.

Tamils also must not harbour any illwill towards the average sinhalese. They must remember the number of sinhalese who helped the tamils in the july 83 riots, some of them at their own risk. Both communities are in the same boat caught like a nutcracker between the devil and deep blue sea when they get shitty leaders. Go after the leaders , not after each other.

One problem with this democratic system is we have to accept the leaders who are thrust upon us, due to family connections or the old boys club. Why can’t we select our own leaders without all this party politics. We have to only ask the people to nominate who they want as their leader and the guy or girl who gets the highest votes has to take up the position of President as a national duty regardless of whether he wants the job or not. Then he can select his ministers and run the country. There can be a mid term referendum to see whether the people want him to continue or not.

In the system i propose it cannot anyway become worse than what it is today.Today we have to send to the zoo in Kotte Gorillas, Donkeys, baboons , chimpanzees, hyenas, pythons and polongas.
